1.02: The Box and The Bunny

Betty arrives at Mode magazine with a box of belongings that includes a pink and green stuffed bunny–a graduation present from her sister. Marc, Wilhelmina’s assistant, demeans Betty’s efforts to personalize her desk. As Betty touches base with Daniel, she points out a recent article noted the shoes he’s wearing were manufactured in a sweat shop. He chides Betty that in the media and in real life–sometimes the truth must get twisted around. At Daniel’s request, Betty sits in on a meeting for a photo shoot with a popular young actress who has recently put on some weight. Wilhelmina and the staff photo-shop Natalie’s pictures to make her look skinnier. Informed by his father that as editor-in-chief Daniel maintains control of “the book,” a mock-up of the magazine which must go home with him every evening. Someone swipes Betty’s bunny, and soon Polaroids featuring bunny torture scenes appear on her desk. Chatting Natalie who’s photos have now been retouched beyond exaggeration, the girls observe that fashion is about the unattainable. Wilhelmina meets with a mysterious woman and discusses getting rid of Daniel, while Bradford and his henchman speak of Fey Summers’ impeding estate sale. Amanda, Mode’s receptionist, encourages Daniel to leave work and go make out with her. In his haste to leave, Daniel forgets “the book,” but Betty spies it and takes it home to Queens for safe keeping. That evening, Betty notices that Natalie’s photos have not been retouched and is proud that Daniel made a bold choice as editor. Gina arrives and demands $4,000 for her broken plasma TV, and Hilda fights with her. Later that evening in Queens, Gina breaks in and steals “the book” as Bradford Meade steals a music box from Fey’s apartment in Manhattan. In the morning, Daniel sends a car to pick up Betty, who he believes still has “the book.” Now caught without it, Betty must confess her lies to Daniel and he berates her. She reminds him that he said it was okay to “twist the truth.” Daniel tries to make a deal with Gina but it’s too late–Marc and Wilhelmina learned of the book’s whereabouts from the driver of Betty’s car. In a bold move, Daniel decides to run the unretouched photos of Natalie since he believes they’re already in the public anyway. Amanda returns the mutilated bunny to Betty and tells her to quit. With her head held high, Betty keeps her job at Mode and replaces Daniel’s sweat shop shoes with American-made. A mysterious woman calls Daniel and warns that his father, “is capable of anything.” Bradford Meade burns a photo of Fey and himself.
