Cocooned at work on the Ugly Bettyset for 70 hours a week, he [Mabius] didn’t quite catch the significance of the rating figurers that said 15 million Americans were turning in weekly, he admitted. It only hit him when he first travelled to New York to do interviews for the show.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” the 36-year-old Pennsylvania-born actor said. “There were police barricades outside the hotel; there were hundreds of people outside. It’s exciting, it means people are watching the show, but it’s intense.”

Wow -I had no idea it had gotten to that kind of intensity.  We had heard that America Ferrera was getting mail addressed to “Betty”, but police barricades?  That’s pretty huge.  Mabius then gets to the heart of why the show is such a success:

Mabius suggested Ugly Betty, a take-off from a popular Spanish-language soap, has quickly embedded itself in the cultural conscience because viewers can relate with its broad range of characters, and because the show addresses intense issues (such as gay character Marc coming out of the closet to his mother) in a way that doesn’t speak down to the audience.

I think that’s key (not speaking down to the audience).  There are many “important”, “serious” shows that get this wrong.  Ugly Betty strikes just the right tone.  The characters are what they are; the producers just let the characters “be”, without undue preaching.

Will Daniel and Betty ever get together?

“The quickest way to kill a show is to have that unrequited love consumated,” Mabius said. But, given the decade-long life-span of most television series, he added: “We joke it’ll happen in season nine or ten.”

I’ve always said that in the end, Daniel should propose to Betty, only to get turned down because she has another love.  I have no idea if it’ll be Henry by that time.

• When Bradford postpones the wedding, Wilhemina keeps her cool.  He asks her if she’s sure she’s all right.  Wlhelmina says everything’s fine, but as she does so the flames in the fireplace rise.  She then proceeds to bash the mannequins on the roof with a baseball bat!
• Justin telling his mother about the Mode Cafeteria, and their famous “Naomi Campbell Tuna Meltdown”.
• Alexis, suffering from amnesia, but now aware that she had gone through a sex change, squeezing her own boobs and giving Daniel/Betty an approving thumbs up.
• “I can’t believe we’re in Lucifer’s chamber…Beelzebub’s lair…the devil’s rumpus room…Oh, look!  A picture of Wilhelmina with Dick Cheney!”  (Cut to a photo of just that).
• My absolute favorite was the sublime moment when Wilhemina is confronting Betty on the roof, she says, “I think you forgot something!”, and we hear thunder.  Betty looks to the perfectly blue sky in puzzlement, then turns to see Marc wiggling a piece of sheet metal to make a thunder sound.  It was so silly and out of place, it was perfect for this show.  I’m still laughing about it a day later!

There were a few more honorable mentions: Betty telling Henry, “We were young and innocent then. Ah, youth!” .  Betty sarcastically saying “Down with babies!”, and a mother looking aghast at her.  Christina: “Ten bucks says there’s a coat in there made of dalmatian puppies”.  Betty and Christina hiding under the bed while Wilhelmina and Dwayne have an “Afternoon Delight”.  Betty texting (somebody) saying”I have to pee”.

Every single scene with Halston, the ugly dog.

There were touching moments as well: Justin at the convenience store where his father was killed, Ignacio helping Hilda to let go of Santos’ stuff, Bradford reconnecting with Alexis.

But, we’ll stick with the comedy.  What, to you, was the best (funniest) moment in the episode?

This photo of Victoria Beckham on then set of Ugly Betty released by ABC is making the rounds.  She’s wearing Vera Wang, and of course, she’s going to be one of Wilhelmina’s bridesmaids.  She does look quite fetching, although she might try a few enchiladas to help with that famine-stricken look.

Not only will Victoria be singing a solo on the Spice Girls Greatest Hits album, she will also apparently be singing a solo during her cameo on “Ugly Betty,” where rumor has it she will be playing Vanessa Williams’ bridesmaid.

I told you she’d get so big Disney would have to make her into a princess!

The accolades keep coming for America Ferrera. The Emmy-winning star of “Ugly Betty” is now the Hispanic Woman of the Year, the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard announced Thursday.

The publications will honor Ferrera and the 25 most powerful Hispanic women in film, television and music at their inaugural Hispanic Women in Entertainment breakfast at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Tuesday.

Wow!  America is hot, hot hot right now!  And why not? She’s smart, and talented, and (so far) a VERY good young role model.  Shoot, the only negative ting I can even think to mention is that she’s a workaholic, and in the US, isn’t that a good thing?

Ferrera “is a leader for all women, but especially those in the Hispanic community,” publisher John Kilcullen said in a statement.

He said the 23-year-old actress is “dedicated to advancing the position of Hispanics in television and film.”

“It’s an honor to be in such esteemed company,” Ferrera said in a statement. “And it’s a thrill to see talented women recognized for their work behind the camera.”

You go, America!

Wilhelmina is speaking before an All Hands meeting.  She is running the meeting as acting editor.  She reads her “Letter From the Editor”, while Betty attempts to grab a bagel.  She slips, falling down and causing a huge ruckus and mess.  Marc “whispers” loudly, “Don’t worry, no one noticed”.  Wilhemina continues.  Betty asks why Daniel isn’t writing the Letter From the Editor.  Wilhelmina calls her, “Pie Eyed, Pie eating Betty”  She then proceeds to ignore Betty.

Back at the hospital, Daniel and Betty are watching Alexis.  Daniel explains that Alexis doesn’t remember anything after their mom’s birthday party, two years previous.  Alexis grabs her breasts (which she’d been doing a lot of), and gives an approving thumbs-up to Daniel and Betty.  Alexis doesn’t know about the divorce, or Claire’s imprisonment and escape, or Bradford’s impending marriage.   Betty begs Daniel to come back to work, but he refuses.  He does ask her to get The Book, though.  Alexis sees a story about her mother’s escape on Fashion TV.

Marc mails off the DNA samples to the lab (not his first time, he says).  Amanda expresses a wish to have known Fey better.  She dreams of getting a big Fey Sommers estate, says she’s waiting to hear from the probate judge.  She shares a silly giggle with Marc about “probate”.

Hilda has gathered all of Santos’ stuff into their apartment  Boxes are everywhere.  Hilda gives Justin a sack lunch, to which he says, “You want me to bring my lunch?  Mom!  The famous Mode cafeteria, where Naomi Campbell has a tuna melt and an meltdown; they now have it on the menu: the Naomi Campbell Tuna Melt Meltdown” (that’s funny!)

Marc, walking behind Wilhelmina, sees Dwayne, Wilhelmina’s new bodyguard.  He is scared witless.  Wilhemina says she hired him to protect her from Claire.  As Betty is walking into the room, Marc yells, “OMG! Its Claire Meade charging for us!”  Dwayne picks her up in a choke hold, until Wilhemina calls him off.  Marc is pleased with himself.  Betty asks for The Book; Wilhelmina refuses.  Betty sees Marc getting a set of Wilhemina’s house keys from his desk for Dwayne (there are more in the desk).  He tells her that The Book is at Wilhelmina’s apartment.

After Marc leaves, she takes a key from Marc’s desk, and turns to see Henry standing before her.

Henry tells Betty that he’ll be going back to Tuscon; he’s just at mode for the job and the insurance.  He’s looking forward to becoming a father. He asks Betty if that’s OK (that he’s there).  She says yes, but she’s obviously thinking No.  “We were young and innocent then. Ah, youth!”  She says they can be buddies.

Cut to Betty telling  Christina that it’s NOT OK.  She says she won’t tell Henry about the doubt surrounding Charlie’s baby.  They turn and go into Wilhemina’s apartment (which Christina didn’t now they were going to do).

Justin arrives at Mode.  Marc immediately tests him with menial tasks. He has Justin update Wilhemina’s contacts in her Blackberry.  A lawyer arrives at the front desk; Amanda is excited to think she might be receiveing a fortune. Unfortunately, all of Fey’s assets were sold off and the money given to charity-except for a Chinese Crested (very ugly dog)  named Halston.  Amanda gets him, and a thousand dollar a week allowance, so Amanda takes him.

As she and Betty are going through Wilhemlina’s apartment, Christina says, “I can’t believe we’re in Lucifer’s chamber…Beelzebub’s lair…the devil’s rumpus room…Oh, look!  A picture of Wilhelmina with Dick Cheney!” (Hilarious – risky, but hilarious).  Also: “Ten bucks says there’s a coat in there made of dalmation puppies”.  They find The Book, but the Wilhelmina appears for a tryst with Dwayne.  Betty and Christina hide under the bed.  Afterward, they escape, but Betty leaves behind an earring.

Bradford has a change of heart and starts to bond with his now more boyish daughter.  He doesn’t tell her about Wilheina.

Ignacio speaks to Hilda over the phone, and convinces her to get rid of all of Santos’ things, but one thing to hold onto (this is what he did with his wife’s things when she died).  Ignacio hatches a plan to cross the border into the US illegaly (again).

Wilhemina finds Betty’s earring and says, “I smell a burrito”.

Marc has a tirade toward all the interns; he is not happy with the way they prepared for Shakira’s photo shoot.  He dismisses them all except Justin, with whom he is pleased.  Wilhemina calls and tells him to get dirt on Betty.  Marc looks at Justin and say, “I hear you loud and clear”  He asks Justin about hs family.

Amanda’s dog apparently emits quite an odor.  Halston then faints. 

Wilhemina has Marc tell Betty to meet her on the roof, immediately.  She goes there; it is filled with mannequins, and Wilhelmina is there.  She holds up the earring and says “I believe you lost something”.  We then hear thunder; Betty looks to the perfectly blue sky and then turns to see Marc wiggling a piece of sheet metal to make the thunder sound!  Brlliant!  Wilhemina tells Betty that if she stays quiet, The Senator can help Ignacio get his visa.

Neither Daniel nor Bradford can tell Alexis about Wilhelmina.

Marc gives Justin a pass to the Shakira shoot.  At this time, Justin finally remembers that his father is gone, and Marc lends a sympathetic ear, if only for a moment.  He also plots with Amanda to get rid of the dog.

Betty has a dream sequence with her dad, telling her to take Wilhelmina’s side so he can get home.

Henry talks to Christina, who finally decides to tell him about the possibility of the baby not being his.

Amanda and Marc take Halston to the animal shelter, but when the person at the front desk tells them that no one will adopt him because he’s so ugly,Amanda has a change of heart.  She decides to keep him.

Justin goes into a market to get rice cakes for Shakira, and discovers its the market where his father got shot.  The owner tells him that Santos was a hero.  He says, “I’ll bet you’re just like him. Justin replies, “No, I’m not”.

Daniel comes back to Mode.  Betty starts to tell him about Wilhelmina (to incriminate her), but Ignacio calls and tells Betty about his plan to cross the border.  Betty tells him not to do anything yet. 

She makes the deal with Wilhelmina.

Hilda and Justin decide to keep just one thing from Santos.  Justin chooses a basketball.

Daniel puts Wilhelmina in her place, but she doesn’t put up a fight.  She passive-aggressively reminds Betty about their deal.

Bradford tells Wilhemina that he’s like to postpone the wedding.  As she pretends like everything’s OK with that decision, the flames rise in the fireplace to illustrate her anger.  She goes to the roof and starts destroying mannequins with a baseball bat.

Hilda tells Betty that Ignacio is coming home (Betty already knows), but Betty is quite distracted with the deal she’s made. 

A man shows up at Ingacio’s house in Mexico and points a gun at him.  It must be the hit-man. 

Henry then shows up at Betty’s door, drunk.  He tells Betty he knows the baby may not be his.  He knows Charlie cheated on him.  He says that he wants to be with Betty.  Fade to black.

I just can’t get over “Alex” grabbing his own boobs, and giving the thumbs up.

He’s going back to Tuscon (so he says).  He’s back for the health insurance.  Asks Betty’s permission.

Down with babies!

Marc is being mean mean to Justin.

Amanda gets Halston, Chinese Crested.  How funny!

Wilhemina and Dick Cheney, oh, man!  I don’t care who you are, that’s funny.

Betty and Christina stuck under the bed while it’s, er, in use.

And, they escape! 

Marc and Justin are a hoot!

Tony Plana is so good.  This show needs more of him.  OOOOhhh – Ignacio is going to sneak across the border.

I smell a burrito!

Marc is great as a tyrant toward the interns.

Hang on Halston!  Don’t quit on me!  Wilhelmina meeting Betty on the roof.  This is great.

Marc making thunder on cue was the best moment of the season so far.

Showdown on the roof.  Wilhemina offers to have her father help Ignacio get home.

Madonna speed the plow tantrum…  Justin finally shows a little emotion about his dad.

Bradford apparently wants to make things right with Alexis.  Dream sequence with Ignacio.

The show is taking a lot of risks.  They have a fine line to walk, not getting preachy. So far, they’re walking it.

Christina is the Henry/Betty go-between.  She tells Henry about Charlie’s baby.

Amanda’s speech with the dog was GREAT!

Justin singing from High School Musical!  Oh, my, he’s in the store where his dad got shot.  Sad.

Daniel’s back in the office.  Ignacio tells Betty he’s coming.  Betty’s going to take Wilhelmina’s offer, apparently.  DON’T DO IT!

Jusin keeping the basketball.  I know where this is going.

Betty’s so conflicted.

Bradford wants to postpone the wedding.

OMG, the flames!  Crazy Wilhemina!  That’s too good.  Ignacio’s coming home.  But there’s thunder outside.

Hilda kept the ugly lamp.

Oh no!  The gangsters found Ignacio.  Henry’s drunk at at Betty’s door. Henry: I want to be with you Betty.  Fade to back.

Cherie in Colorado: Henry’s back on Ugly Betty this week. Tell me he ditched the annoying chick!

Her answer:

Unfortunately, no. They’re still very much a couple. He came back to Mode because he needs to be gainfully employed, given his impending fatherhood…

You know, I suspected this (why else would he just suddenly appear?), and it’s very smart plot-wise (in this type of show it’s best to drag out the romantic tension as long as possible), but, man, Charlie is annoying!  If they could come up with a plot-line where she runs off with Walter, all would be well.

It would appear Betty is going to have to continue to fight for Henry…but will she want to?  Especially with Gio entering the picture.  Should be interesting.

Which Quarterback Is Your Favorite Ugly Betty Character?

• Wilhelmina: Tom Brady.  She is very, very good at what she does.  She’s not above cheating (or acting all innocent when she gets caught).

• Daniel: Eli Manning.  He’s in his current position because his father pulled a few strings, and he has a ‘brother’ whose reputation he can never live up to.

• Bradford Meade: Brett Favre.  He’s a hundred years old, always takes the perfect slant, and is still good with his feet.

• Amanda Tanen (Tie): David Carr.  Spent most of her career on her back.  Also – Jared Lorenzen (NY Giants backup).  She (right now) weighs over 250, and nobody ever sees her doing anything.  She was once a big star in a small-time gig.

• Ignacio: Donovan McNabb.  He’s stuck in a godforsaken place, and people are trying to kill him.

• Marc: (Tie) Rex Grossman.  Much maligned, but always willing (if not able) do do what is necessary to accomplish what’s asked of him.  Not afraid to do the dirty work.  Was benched for a while.  Also: Tony Romo.  I mean, is he not the prettiest man you’ve ever seen?

• Claire: Joey Harrington.  They sent her to prison, er Atlanta, but every time she’s written off, she comes back.

• Alexis: Peyton Manning.  Because everybody knows he’s really a girl.

• Christina: Drew Brees.  She’s very, very good, but stuck in the basement.  Last year, for a short time, she had her moment to shine, but it came at a horrible cost.

• Henry:Matt Leinart.  He probably wanted to go somewhere else, but ended up in Arizona.  He’s always having to struggle with another guy for playing time.  You can tell he’s going to be very, very good one day.

• Betty: Vince Young.  She’s there because the owner insisted she be hired (and by doing so, saved a lot of jobs).  She never gets points on style, but somehow she always comes out on top.  We can’t help but cheer for her.

Well, that’s my list.  Feel free to suggest your own additions or subtractions.
