I love the jewelry, and how it seems to match the hem of her dress.

Spoiler alert: the awards show airs tonight on ABC, so if you don’t want to know who won, quit reading, just hit the ‘more’ button to get more Hayek.

The awards themselves were an Ugly Betty-palooza.  Hayek was given the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence.  Lauren Velez (UB’s Elena) won TV Drama Actress for her work in “Dexter”.

But the night belonged to Freddy Rodriguez and Nothing Like The Holidays, which won three awards.  Excellent!

The wires just don’t have much info about any of the other awards, so we’re just going to have to watch them together tonight to find out if there were any other Ugly Betty related winners!

Guess who else is nominated in this category?  Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz. 

Will Ferrera lose once again to someone on 30 Rock?    Just kidding.  Hayek was VERY funny on 30 Rock and would deserve the award if she wins.

There’s no TV Movie Drama category, or certainly Ortiz would have been nominated for her work in Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story, as was the case with the Imogen Awards.

The ALMA Awards, in their 15th year, celebrate Latino achievements in film, TV and music.  This year they will be hosted by Eva Longoria Parker.

Salma is also receiving a special achievement award, the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence. 

For the testosterone set, Ugly Betty’s Tony Plana and Mark Indelicato (yeah!) received nominations as Best Actor in a TV Comedy. 

Also of Ugly Betty note: alum Freddy Rodriguez was nominated for his work in Nothing Like the Holidays, along with co-star Elisabeth Peña.

Ugly Betty honorees in the behind-the-scenes category include Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta as executive producers, and hairstylist Mary Ann Valdes.

The ALMA awards will be held/filmed September 17 at the Royce Hall Auditorium at UCLA and will air Friday, September 18 (8:00 to 10:00 p.m., ET/PT), on ABC.

Now, any of you who have read Ugly Betty News for a while must know that I have mixed feelings about this. I love Hayek. I think she’s a very good actress, has some pretty sharp business savvy, and of course, she’s quite easy on the eyes.

Yet, at the same time, I have this irrational, visceral hatred for all things 30 Rock. As you know, every awards show in Hollywood that has television categories for the last couple of years has gone like this:

America Ferrera is certain to receive a nomination as a comedy actress.

She is certain to lose the actual award to Tina Fey. After about the 20th time that this happened, I learned to hate 30 Rock. The love for it seems to be some kind of hip, intellectual inside joke.

I told you my hatred was irrational, but it’s real.

Anyway, Hayek will appear as the nurse of Jack’s mother (an his girlfriend). I have no doubt it’s going to be hilarious.

I guess I’ll record it to watch later. But I’m going to hit mute every time Tina Fey is on the screen.

By now, I’m sure you’ve seen the photos of Ugly Betty executive producer Salma Hayek smoking with her baby nearby while after-Christmas shopping. Needless to say, they’ve caused quite an uproar.

Part of me says, “A Hollywood celebrity smoking? Who woulda’ thunk it?”. Hollywood has a long tradition of smokers, many of whom are considered legends.
And, whose business is it anyways? This is NOT Michael Jackson holding his infant son over a balcony railing. Heck, it’s not even Miley Cyrus riding around without a seat belt. In America, smoking tobacco is not yet illegal.

Yet, there’s another part of me, the ex-smoker and parent, who says, “Someone needs to give Salma a tsk-tsk, if only to protect little Valentina.” America has a strong puritanical streak, and, although it’s no longer focused on sexuality, it can come out when issues like smoking or environmentalism come up. We are not above putting a scarlet “S” on someone.

Exposing a child to second-hand smoke is not the wisest of parental policies.

Also, I’ve seen Eric Mabius quoted on some entertainment blogs as hating to work with Salma because of the smoking, but I can’t confirm that through major media sources. But, it wouldn’t surprise me, if true.

But, then I come back around to thinking it’s none of my business.

On another note, isn’t little Valentina absolutely beautiful?

Remember when I told you about Ugly Betty producer Salma Hayek trying to use breastfeeding as a weight loss method? To refresh your memory, a friend of the actress said: “Salma has been pumping and freezing endless amounts of breast milk. When she’s not feeding Valentina, she’s hooked up to an industrial-size breast pump.”

I remember talking to some friends of mine in the medical profession, and they said she was absolutely making a mistake. Breastfeeding is for a specific purpose, and it isn’t weight loss.

Well, Hayek recently appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show, and admits she now believes that breastfeeding does not help with weightloss. She said about breastfeeding, pregnancy and weight loss:

“Yes, and I’m still working on it. I gained a lot of weight, I had gestational diabetes. The pregnancy was really difficult for me. I thought, as soon as this baby is out, I’m just going to lose the weight super fast, because I’m going to breast feed, and everybody tells you that if you breastfeed it’s going to come out like this, it’s a lie! It’s not true.

“Except for a couple of exceptions, the only reason people lose weight like that when they’re breastfeeding, it’s because they’re not eating and they’re breastfeeding, and this is not good for the baby. You know how they tell you it takes nine months to get it, nine months to lose it? There are shortcuts, but it’s not good for the baby. So I’m taking my time. I’ve lost a lot, most of the weight, and I’m very proud of it because it’s been really hard work studying what kind of food to eat that’s healthy for me, healthy for the baby. But I’m still losing even if it’s slow, and I’ve been working out… and the rest is going to go when it’s time to go.”

What she needs to do is hang out with Vanessa Williams.

What, you might ask, is the U.G.L.Y celebrity of the year award?  It is given each year by Hey U.G.L.Y, a teen self-esteem building non-profit organization.  The name is an acronym for Unique Gifted Lovable You.  From the press release:

America’s portrayal of Ugly Betty on the show by the same name, cinched the vote. America is not only turning out to be a great role model, teens actually tune in to watch her and are inspired by her. Additionally, she is human, and is complete with experiences that move her forward in her life and career as well. She can freely let her hair down and that makes her real and an individual teens can relate to. In fact, someone we can all relate to.

Ferrera was selected from hundreds of celebrities (many of them are featured on the organization’s web sitegiving self-esteem testimonials, including Adam Brody, Ciara, Halle Berry, Ryan Cabrera, and many more).  No doubt Ferrera will have her own testimony posted soon.

Hey U.G.L.Y’s  purpose ” exists for the sole purpose of helping teens discover their inner uniqueness, beauty and gifts to help them counter challenges such as delinquency, unhealthy relationships, eating disorders, bullying, violence, substance abuse, delinquency and suicide.”

Interestingly, last year’s winner was Ugly Betty producer Salma Hayek.

First, the one you’ve probably seen. Rebecca Romjin’s husband (and season 1 guest star) Jerry O’Connell made this very funny parody video of the pretty bizarre Tom Cruise Scientology video making the rounds.

Many are saying this may be the end of O’Connell’s career, but I think it might actually help. Cruise’s power in Hollywood is a shadow of what it once was.

Next comes Ugly Betty producer and season 1 star, Salma Hayek. According to reports, Hayek has, in effect, turned herself into a milk factory. As you know, She had baby Valentina in Spetember. She has apparently been freezing her breast milk – not such a strange thing. But, her reasons for doing so are cause for concern.

A friend of the actress said: “Salma has been pumping and freezing endless
amounts of breast milk. When she’s not feeding Valentina, she’s hooked up to
an industrial-size breast pump.”

The reports claim she is doing it to shed post-pregnancy pounds. It is reported that she’s not having much luck. If she’s breastfeeding and pumping as often as has been reported, she’s got to be sore!

Finally, comes the strangest interview with Eric Mabius. We now know what kind of porn he prefers. The interview starts nicely, with a bit of info about Mabius I didn’t know:

I went to (formerly all-female) Sarah Lawrence College, so it was this odd universe for a guy, with three times as many women. You had your pick of stunning, talented, remarkable women, but they’d generally break up with you before you had a chance to break up with them.

Then, he delves into the area of TMI:

[about all-female porn] Sure! Double your pleasure, double your fun! I think that kind of porn is much more appealing because dudes are nasty. I don’t want to watch porn that has dude parts in it.

According to Page Six, Hayek reported her laptop stolen on a recent trip abroad.  It is reported that the notebook computer was filled with photos of friends, family, and her baby Valentina.

I’d be in quite a panic myself, and I’m no international celebrity who is stalked by relentless paparazzi, as Hayek is.  According to the report, Hayek is “desperate to get the computer back and worried that the images could fall into the wrong hands.”

I would imagine so.

If you are reading this, and you are the one who took Ms Hayek’s laptop, I’m warning you.  I’d turn it in at the nearest police station if I were you.   You do NOT want to come between a new momand her baby pictures.  She might be a little “hormotional”, as Wilhelmina said in “Zero Worship“.  

If a bearded woman comes after you with an angry look on her face, I’d run if I were you.  You have been warned.

Cirque du Freak is part of a vampire-based young adult book series, which in the United States was called “The Saga Of Darren Shan”.   Here is the synopsis:

A young boy named Darren Shan meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a Vampire. After a series of events Darren must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak and become a Vampire.

Reilly will play the vampire.  Hayek, according to reports, will play Madame Truska, the bearded lady.   Production begins in February.

Hayek, one of the creators of Ugly Betty (she was instrumental in the casting of America Ferrera), gave birth to a baby girl in September.  This is her first acting job since then. 

As fond as Hayek is of showing cleavage (and who am I to argue?),  I wonder if any men will even notice her beard?
