The highest profile cast members of Ugly Betty, as part of the Screen Actors Guild, had produced a video in support of the striking Writers Guild.  It is part of a series of videos, “Speechless”, that is, ironically, being released exclusively on the internet:

Now, I’ve made no secret that I am not very enamoured of this strike.  I’m amazed how the writers are simultaneously overstating their greivances, while being too flippant about a work stoppage that is keeping less-paid workers without paychecks.  They seem to be tone deaf about public relations.

However, the SAG is shoulder-to-shoulder with their writer brethren, and you have to admire their creativity.  Maybe the actors can bail the writers out.

Starting in the writing class.  Victor Garber has already gotten started.  Man, he’s a handful!

It’s good to see Ignacio back.  OMG, Justin, the gangsta!  Alexis is hilarious. I like Kenny (John Cho).  Great character.  Henry’s coming to Betty’s to tutor Justin. Marc and Amanda are hanging out in the love dungeon. Marc is wearing Bear Bryant’s hat.

My wife says Bradford looks good in purple.  Anna Nichole Smith – OMG.  Daniel is being very nice to Alexis. 

Daniel’s thumbs up to “Makin’ It”!  That’s great.

You’re up, crappy!  That was a good line.  Betty read the wrong story!  This should be interesting.

Justin is imitating what he imagines his father was.  Betty’s having a dream scene with the bear.  A teddy bear attack, that’s too funny!

Wilhelmina: I was a simple girl with an evil plan.  Marc: Dooomed!  Doomed, I say!

Now the bunny is haunting Betty.  I love the threatening stuffed animals. 

Last week’s episode was short on comedy; this one is filled with it.

James Van Der Beek’s character is a real jerk.  Betty has a real quandry.  So does Daniel.

Marc gets hit with a high heel shoe.  Bullseye!  Amanda just found out that Wilhelmina used to be “Wanda”.  And Wilhelmina knows she knows.  I wonder what the significance of “Wanda” is.

Betty turns down the New York Review.  “You’re carrying low – it’s a boy”.  Great flashback.  Amanda’s dad has a Tweetybird tattoo on his butt!

Is Wilhemina trying to drive tha magazine into the ground?

The real bear attack woman is at Betty’s desk.  Hey, look, a Vera Wang Kohl’s commercial.  You think this was “in kind” for the appearance in the “Posh Wedding” episode?

Daniel bails Betty out.  That was interesting.

OMG, JUSTIN IN MAKING OUT!  With a girl!  Who shocks Henry, apparently.

This is a very sweet moment with Betty and Daniel.

Wilhemina gives Amanda the guest list at Studio 54 for the night she was conceived.

You know, I’m starting to think the writers in the show might seriously consider a Daniel/Betty relationship.  I’m against it, myself, even for the series finale.  SHe needs to turn him down, IMHO.

Alexis hugging Daniel in the men’s room whilst he was peeing – funny.  Daniel confesses to Alexis.   Ted Kennedy, Warren Beatty, that’s too good.  Wilhelmina plans to start “Slater” Magazine after Mode dies.

A reveal: THE BABY IS HENRY’S!  Betty tells him to leave.  This is sad.

End with Betty reading her story, her real story.  This episode was more the Ugly Betty that I love.

The Insider is reporting that Ugly Betty will have Betty competition in December: Betty White!

ABC has confirmed that the “Golden Girls” actress will make a guest appearance playing herself in December.

One of the things I love about this show is the opportunity for cameos.  As much as I love Lost or CSI, (BTW, these are two of my favorite fellow Spekked blogs!)  guest stars generally cannot play themselves, and on Ugly Betty there’s more opportunity to have a little fun with the casting.  I’d love nothing better than if they brought back many of the stars of MTM, a show that had the same “feel” as Ugly Betty.

Rebecca Romjin had a close call last night, apparently.  According to NewsDay:

NEW YORK – A small electrical fire in the Broadway building that houses the Ed Sullivan Theater briefly hospitalized a “Late Show With David Letterman” crew member with smoke inhalation Wednesday, officials said.

A small fire that originated inside an air conditioning unit was blamed for the smoke. No other injuries were reported, and the Letterman taping _ with guests Rebecca Romijn, Jimmy Walker and LeAnn Rimes _ was not delayed.

“Everyone was OK, and they actually believe the fire was started by a disgruntled audience,” Letterman joked on the show.

Ugly Betty’s Rebecca Romjin has recently admitted that she suffered from clinical depression following her breakup with ex-husband John Stamos.  They split in 2004 after ten years together.  She told Grazia magazine:

“I went through a lot of red wine. And a lot of therapy,” she’s quoted as saying.
“I had six or eight months where I was clinically depressed.”

I find it quite interesting that Romjin chose and unconventional treatment (she did not take antidepressants).  But Romjin, who plays gender-reassigned Alexis on Ugly Betty, is an uncommon person.

I’d rather self-medicate and stick with red wine,” she laughed.

“It might not make me feel good the next day, but I know it’s gonna be out of my system.”

Her life seems to have definitely taken a turn for the better.  She not only landed the role of Alexis Meade, she is married again, to all-American boy Jerry O’Connell.  Romjin has shown far more depth as an actress and as a comedian than I expected, and it could be because she’s getting help from her Carpoolers star hubby:

She says she’s loving playing the part – and even roped in her new hubby to help her get into character before she had to shoot scenes showing Alexis learning how to be a woman.

“I made Jerry walk around in heels the night before that scene,” she admitted.
“He put them on for 10 seconds and he was like, ‘This is awful, I hate it’ but I was like, ‘It’s research! I need to know what a man looks like walking in heels!’”
