America Ferrera at 2009 Golden Globes

She mentioned in her interview Tuesday on The View that she hadn’t picked a dress yet. I’d say she did pretty well for just “throwing something together”. I know Ferrera is fond of Monique Lhuillier, but I don’t know if that’s who she turned to yet. Stay tuned…

As much as I love when America wears form-fitting dresses in defiance of the Hollywood zero worship, I think this dress is extremely flattering. Compared to some of her earlier red carpet appearances, it’s obvious that Ferrera displays more confidence, and that Vanessa Williams‘ mentoring is paying off.

As for the awards themselves, I thought the broadcast was a trainwreck. It made me pine for last year’s strike-caused news conference show.

I probably would have felt better if America had won the semi-annual Tina Fey award, er, award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, but we all knew the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would go with Fey.

I so wished Tina Fey had spoken to me when she jokingly addressed her internet detractors.

Regardless, just seeing America look so beautiful and done-up made the evening worthwhile.

Well, she lost. 

America had been on a hot streak, winning just about every conceivable award for which she could be nominated.  But, because the Globes like to reward newcomers, and Tina Fey is the comedic actress of the moment, few thought America would win.

 I felt kind of sorry for the hosts on NBC – they were expected to list the nominees, name the winner, and give instant reaction.  They handled themselves about as well as can be expected.  I only caught a few minutes of the actual ceremony on CNN – incredibly boring.

Please, please, please – let’s not do this again.  How about we get this strike settled before next year’s Emmy’s?

Then, Friday night, Micheal Urie hosts the second episode of “Miss America Reality Check” on TLC. Hopefully, we’ll be introduced to the rest of the ladies this week, and see a little more Urie. This show has a lot of promise, and actually might make the actual pageant, well, watchable.

Then Sunday, barring any unforseen events the Golden Globes trainwreck awards news conference will be held. Regardless of how silly this all seems, America Ferrera is still up for Best Acrtess in a Comedy Series, so there will most likely be an America Ferrera sighting…somewhere.

Here is what will actually air:

– At 9 PM there will be a press conference covered by NBC News announcing the Golden Globe winners. (9pm-10pm)
– At 8 PM, we are negotiating with Dick Clark Enterprises for a one-hour retrospective/clip show.
– At 7 PM, we will air a Dateline with clips and interviews with nominees. (Currently scheduled to air for two hours on Saturday night.)
– At 10 PM, we will broadcast an “Access Hollywood” style, Golden Globes party show…visiting the various parties in Hollywood.

Remember – NONE of this will be written by WGA members.  It has the potential to be a trainwreck.  No red carpet, no chance for designers to show off their work.  Nothing for E! and TVGuide to do.

America Ferrera is still up for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series; I’m still rooting for her, but I’m afraid the actual awards are going to be overshadowed by all of this craziness.

Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera, nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a comedy series, will not be attending the awards ceremony on January 13th (airing on NBC). 

The Screen Actors Guild, to which Ferrera belongs, will be boycotting the Golden Globes, according to a statement by SAG president Alan Rosenberg.  Not a acting nominee will appear (that includes Ferrera).

"After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters," Rosenberg said. "We applaud our members for this remarkable show of solidarity for striking Writers Guild of America writers."

Hollywood Foreign Press president Jorge Camara said in response to Rosenberg’s announcement, "[We] have been placed in an extremely difficult position with the ongoing Writers Guild strike. We are making every effort to work out a solution that will permit the Golden Globes to take place with the creative community present to participate."

That may mean taped acceptance speeches, as they are doing at Tuesday’s People’s Choice Awards. But networks like E! and TVGuide have got to be totally bummed: no stars on the red carpet?

The stars ARE being encouraged to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman and The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.  Both of these shows have waiver deals with the WGA.

Maybe we’ll see America on Letterman?

But the television nominations are a joke. It’s so absurd, I’m almost at a loss for words.  Let’s let E! Online’s Kristin explain to you just how crazy this is:

Either I didn’t slam enough espresso this morning for my very early morning call and was nodding off while the Golden Globe nominations were announced, or the following should-be shoo-ins were completely left out of the running this year:

• Lost
• Heroes
• Ugly Betty
• Desperate Housewives
• And even…the freaking Office!

Say it with me now: WTF?

And what’s more, save for acting nods to America Ferrera and Steve Carell, all the actors and actresses from these shows were completely shut out, too.

WTF, indeed.

Now, of course, I’m going to be an Ugly Betty homer – but how the heck do you not nominate The Office?  Lost? The ladies of Desperate Housewives?  Now, Kristin has a theory, and I agree with her analysis:

See, Globes voters are notorious for being all about hot new shows—preferably big-buzz and big-audience (read: network) new shows…Save for a possible nod for something or someone related to Private Practice (and really…meh), there simply aren’t any first-season comedies or dramas that jump to mind as having been royally snubbed. Yes, I love Gossip Girl and Chuck as much as the next guy, but they just aren’t the type of shows that normally get taken seriously by awards voters.

And Kristin adds this advice:

Perhaps it’s time for the networks to up their A game and get more competitive with cable. And maybe give show runners and writers more creative control, like they have over on the now-lauded cable nets, who appear to be kicking their keisters.

Just a thought.

If a show has to be new to get a nod from the HFPA, how the heck do you recognize perennial favorites like Seinfeld? As for network creative control… 

It’s possible.  But, this isn’t really the case with Ugly Betty, now is it?   Silvio Horta, credited as the show’s creator,  is a writer and executive producer of the show.  I’ve never seen any grumblings in the trades or elsewhere from Horta or Salma Hayek that the network nixed an idea or pushed the creators in any particular direction.

And it’s really a shame that Ugly Betty got no nods besides Ferrera (and how can you have an awards show lately without nominating America Ferrera?).  The show is “edgy”, but in a more mature way than many of the cable shows.  A good number of those (basic cable) shows remind me of a ten year old who has discovered mild curse words and says them over and over, just because he can.  The edginess has no substance behind it.  Ugly Betty covers some incredibly touchy and edgy material, but does it with such a playful, non-preachy spirit to the point that the less discerning might miss it entirely.  That’s subversive.  That’s ground-breaking.

Also, the show has come under fire from some because it has branched off in new directions.  The show could have played it safe, and continued along the same fish-out-of-water storylines, but the show would have become dry and tired, IMHO.  The additions of Gio and Cliff have added dimensions that keep the old storylines fresh.  In fact, both of those characters are so likeable, they could pull off their own series.

The fact that Michael Urie and Vanessa Williams were shut out, after all the snubs last year, is outrageous.  Urie has been spectacular this year, and Williams has been playing the foil with such abandon, she deserves recognition.

This is not to even mention the inexplicable snubs to The Office and Lost.

It’s getting harder and harder to take the Golden Globes seriously.
