TV Guide’s Micheal Ausiello gives us hints about the Amanda/Gene Simmons story line, and if it goes where I think it’s going, Amanda will have more sadness in her life:

Ausiello: Gene Simmons is back, and let’s just say life with daddy isn’t everything she hoped it would be.

I have two thoughts about this. The first is an empahtic: “ya think?” Gene Simmons isn’t exactly Bill Cosby in the whole husband and father department. I’m wondering if they are going to play this as Amanda finally getting tired of Simmons paying attention to groupies instead of her. Personally, I would have loved to see a feud between Amanda and Simmons’ two real-life children, but that would have meant more guest stars and more complications; that’s something Silvio Horta and the writers are trying to avoid.

Secondly, of all the characters in Ugly Betty, Amanda strikes me as the most sad – almost tragic. Yes, she mean and catty (especially to Betty), but it seems like she just can’t buy a break in life, especially in the love and family department. Her friendship with Marc is really all she has. This is why the chemistry between Becki Newton and Micheal Urie is so important.

Anyway, what do you make of Ausiello’s hints – where do you think the Gene Simmons story is going to go?

One thing lost in all the ship speculation from the Ugly Betty episode 2.14 (24 Candles) promo is that it looks like Amanda (Tanen-Sommers-Simmons) is going to go through another “phase”. Now that she’s found her Dad (Gene Simmons), it would seem that Amanda is going to do what she always does – go overboard.

I think this could actually be pretty funny for a while, just as the whole Halston gag was/is (I love Chinese Cresteds!) Just from the one second we see in the promo, seeing the normally chic Amanda grunged out in a Kiss T-shirt, with too much eyeliner and slightly frizzed hair is hilarious.

I just hope the scripts give her enough time to develop this story line. Becki Newton seems willing to do anything the writers throw at her (”Milkshake“, “Gene Simmons is my Daaaaddddyyy“), and when she does these sort of things, she steals the show.

Hopefully, Amanda’s “Rock Chick” phase will play out better than “Fat Amanda” did. I was apprehensive about that whole story line when I first heard about it. In retrospect, it was just stupid. It was one of the few “misses” the show has ever had, writing-wise. They only did it half-heartedly.

Back to episode 2.14: I wnder what Marc is going to think of the “new” Amanda? Maybe dating Cliff will make him a little more tolerant.

I KNEW this would show up pretty quickly, because the most popular segments of Ugly Betty involve Amanda Singing.  This is from episode 2.13, A Thousand Words By Friday.  I think what makes it so funny is that Becki Newton really can sing, and her attempts to sing off-key are even more pronounced, yet her voice is still under control. 

There is SO much that is funny in this clip. The Brittney reference at the beginning, “Except for your voice, you’re a great singer!”, the change of look on Marc’s face when Simmons says “Cher was so pissed off”, and these lyrics, which I missed the first time:

A famous Gene is in my genes, because he got in my momma’s jeans…

And don’t forget the surreal setting – she’s singing these lyrics in a bar called “The Beer Hole” with a band of accountants.

This scene probably saved this episode.

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has issued the following update:
“On Monday, December 3rd, I’m shooting ‘Ugly Betty’ — not her…the show. Can’t tell you just yet who I’m playing or what it’s about. But it might give you a chuckle. On Tuesday, December 4th, going over to do Miss Chelsea Handler’s show on E! entertainment TV. We will post air dates.”

Let me tell you what I think this means:

I could be totally wrong about this, but wouldn’t it be awesome if Gene Simmons played himself, and it was discovered he was Amanda’s father?  He’s the right age, and he was quite the dog back in the day.  I’m not sure he hung out at Studio 54 – but Gene did date Cher, and is partnered with a Playboy playmate, so it wouldn’t be out of the question.

But, even if his appearance has nothing to do with Amanda, Simmons is larger-than-life enough to be a wonderful guest star on Ugly Betty.
