Wow – what an absolutely beautiful, classic dress. It’s from Rafael Cennamo, and this color is not only daring, but quite perfect for Vanessa.

It would be incredibly wrong of me to go one more minute without posting a couple of pics of Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams at the Emmys this past Sunday.

Wow – what an absolutely beautiful, classic dress. It’s from Rafael Cennamo, and this color is not only daring, but quite perfect for Vanessa.

But, what absolutely makes this look work is the incredible makeup by Sam Fine. For an in-depth look at how Fine worked around the challenge of not only a very hot day, but this wonderful dress as well, check out this post.

“Because Vanessa’s dress choice was such a strong color, this forced me to re-address the neutrals I had in my kit,” admits Fine. “I wanted to go for a little more color in the cheek, as well as the lip, so I needed to find the perfect coral-pink shade, because true pink can be hard to wear.”

She was so perfect – she looked like a perfect porcelain doll – albeit one with great charm and humor.

Of course, Vanessa didn’t win Outstanding Supporting Actress (again). It’s hard to be mad at the fact that the very deserving Kristin Chenoweth won. I think Vanessa’s going to have one more chance, though.

But, congratulations to Williams for the nomination, and for showing the youngsters how you do the red carpet!

It’s that time of year again; everyone seems to be doing some early handicapping the Emmys. The latest entry is Michael Slezak’s prognostication in Entertainment Weekly. And he seems to like Ugly Betty. A lot. (Hey, so do I!)
He doesn’t give an entire list, but Slezak is operating under the assumption that Vanessa Williams is a hands-down favorite for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her portrayal of Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty. And, although I agree (she’s shown some incredible range in season 3), we Vanessa Williams fans have been burned before when it comes to television’s [...]
Post from: Ugly Betty News

It’s that time of year again; everyone seems to be doing some early handicapping the Emmys. The latest entry is Michael Slezak’s prognostication in Entertainment Weekly. And he seems to like Ugly Betty. A lot. (Hey, so do I!)

He doesn’t give an entire list, but Slezak is operating under the assumption that Vanessa Williams is a hands-down favorite for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her portrayal of Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty. And, although I agree (she’s shown some incredible range in season 3), we Vanessa Williams fans have been burned before when it comes to television’s highest honor.

Williams has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ugly Betty seasons 1 and 2, but she was beaten by Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl) in 2007, and Jean Smart (Samantha Who?) in 2008.

Considering those two shows have been canceled, perhaps it’s finally Vanessa’s turn? Maybe Williams will be the favorite this year.

Slezak lists four dark horses for the supporting actor/actress awards. He gives a nod to Keir Gilchrist, United States of Tara, Hamish Linklater, The New Adventures of Old Christine. He then says the following about Michael Urie:

Watching Marc strive for love and a better career proved alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, and proved Urie is every bit as valuable to the Ugly Betty cast as the more heralded Williams and America Ferrera.

I couldn’t agree more – like I’ve said, Urie has absolutely shined this past season, becoming almost a co-star. Granted, the writers gave him more to work with than Becki Newton or Eric Mabius (who was also great this year!), but Michael ran with it. I’d love to see him get the nomination, but it’s hard to break past the usual suspects (Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Cryer, half the cast of Entourage). We’ll see.

Finally, Slezak gives props to Ana Ortiz. In the past, I’ve clamored for Becki Newton to get a Supporting nomination instead of Ana, but this year, Ana probably deserves it a little more. (Sorry Becki – it’s not you – the writers struggled all year with Amanda). Ana Ortiz, however, has not only been hilarious at times, but she got her drama on several times (most notably, episode 3.12, Sisters On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown – not my favorite episode, but Ortiz had some great scenes nonetheless). AND, she had two romances!

All this being said, most likely Vanessa Williams will be the only cast member to get a supporting nomination. I don’t think the Academy was very fond of Ugly Betty’s second season, and they probably won’t give Ugly Betty the look it deserves for season 3, which is a shame.

But, here’s hoping they ALL get nominations!

From the beautiful, classy, extra-long strapless dress, to the blingage to the perfect makeup – Jensen was nothing less than the classiest lady on the red carpet.
Hopefully, one day, she’ll win for her work with Ugly Betty, which I think is underrated (Vanessa Williams and Becki Newton get more screen time, so they are usually first in line for Supporting Actress nominations).
I love this pic with her husband, Terence Beesley:

Of course, it’s no secret that Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera is on the Emmy shortlist for Best Actress in a Comedy. If there is an awards show that gives television awards, you can bet that America Ferrera will be nominated in the actress category. And rightly so.
BUT, this year was kind of spotty for Ugly Betty. So, if you want Ferrera to win (and I so desperately DO – we get it, Hollywood, you like Tina Fey – enough already), it would be of concern just which episode was submitted to showcase America’s talents.

I am pleased to let you know that somebody bought a clue and submitted by far the funniest America Ferrera episode of the season: 2.12, Odor In The Court.

I think she has a chance. This was the episode where they just let Ferrera do her thing. Because of the plot (a drugged perfume made her hyperactive and Henry-crazed), she was uncharacteristically the strangest person in the room.

This was a great choice! To refresh your memory, here was one of the best moments from that episode:

Good luck, America!

I was wondering if any party pics of cast members would surface. You never know – the Ugly Betty cast is one of the hardest working in show business. Good to see some of the cast made it to the parties.

What the heck is up withn the stiletto-cam? (If you’re watching E!, you know what I mean)

5:09: Al Gore in in da house. Check it: a printable scorecard!

5:13: Eric Mabius has arrived – wearing Ferragamo. My goodness, he looks polished. My wife is, shall we say, impressed. I’ll have some pics in a minute.

5:19: You know, I love Eva Longoria, I even love her dress, but I’d be so tempted to use her as a disco ball:

5:25: OMG, America Ferrera is being interviewed on E! She is absolutely goregeous tonight. Talking about her hybrid, looking for a house, and nominations with Seacrest. Just wait till you see the pics!

5:33 – Ana Ortiz on E! Wearing a beautiful Escada. Talking about her wedding, the cast. My wife says she’s holding her arms outward so she doesn’t sweat. Oh, the tricks I’m learning tonight…

5:41 – Rebecca Romjin arriving. Can’t quite see her outfit yet…

5:45 – Jaime Pressley talking about starving herself and working out two hours a day after her baby was born. Bleh.

5:50: Hayden Panetteire is sneaking in a small deli meal beneath this dress:

I’ve started an America Ferrera pic thread. Check it out.

6:08 - Pics of Becki Newton, Micheal Urie, and Ana Ortiz

6:18 - Vanessa Williams has arrived. We are all very divided over her outfit. I like it, others hate it. Nice color for her, though. Wearing a Kevin Hall. Talking about being a mother, and being too busy to get caught up in all the paparazzi business.

6:20 – Rebecca Romjin and Jerry O’Connell. Just Damn. Stunning.

6:27 – Fox is hyping that Britney Spears might make an appearance on tonight’s show to apologise for her appearance at the VMAs. Stay tuned.

6:30 – Judith Light:

6:38 – Added more pics of America Ferrera.

6:39 – Judith Light is hamming it up with Vanessa Williams on Fox’s pre-show. Vanessa called them the dynamic duo.

6:48: Added a Rebecca Romjin pic post. Wow.

7:00 – Here we go…Great “Family Guy” musical number.

7:01 – I’m trying to like Ryan Seacrest, I really am!

7:03 – I think this is really cool in the round. Ray Ramono is actually funny. He needs to speed it up, though. But what the heck just happened? Was he bleeped out, or was that a technical glitch?

Best Supporting Actor in Comedy Series: (where the heck is the nom for Michael Urie?). Winner – Jeremy Piven (I KNEW IT!). Nice tribute to his father in acceptance speech.

Vanessa and America up! Best supporting actor in a drama series: Winner – Terry O’Quinn! I love the pink shirt.

7:17 – The aforementioned Vanessa Williams:

7:18 – Supporting Actress in a comedy series: Winner: Jaime Pressley. Pah. Vanessa so should have ruled this category.

7:22 – Supporting Actor in miniseries or movie: Winner: Thomas Haden Church, Broken Trail. He’s funny!

I’m killing my home page – added the “more” link. Ellen introducing something, she’s not really sure what… Oh, a collection of late night comedy clips.

7:34 – Best supporting actress in a drama series: Winner - Katherine Heigl. She just yelled “Sh*t!” when she realised she won. Fox can’t keep up.

Writing for Variety Music or Comedy program: (The intro is funny). Winner: Conan Brien’s show!

7:46 – Christina Aguiera and Tony Bennett: Dang, Tony can still sing! Aguilera oversings; she sings well, but her performance is all about “look how well I sing!” Bennett understands the song and is flawless. Oh great, Alec Baldwin.

Directing for Variety Music or Comedy Series: Winner – Rob Marshall for the Tony Bennett special. Boy they don’t give them long for acceptance speeches…

Lead Actor in Miniseries or Movie: Winner – Robert Duvall, who else!

7:54 Robert Duvall just said “Thank you for being here” – If he had added “Please try the veal”, it would had been a perfect moment!

7:59 Queen Latifah, looking beautiful, paying tribute to Roots. Nice. That was THE must-watch-TV of my youth. Most of the cast is on stage, how cool. Has it really been 30 years?

Oustanding Miniseries: Winner – Broken Trail . It’s winning a lot of Emmys tonight. Go Robert Duvall!

Hayden Panetteire looks airbrused like a Playboy centerfold.

8:10 – Sopranos just won the directing and writing awards for drama series. My connection crapped out there for a second, so I missed some of that – sorry.

I’m really digging this Macy’s commercial. Thank God Peyton Manning isn’t in it!

8:14 – Has anyone noticed Ryan Seacrest hasn’t had very much screen time since he made the joke about Paula Abdul?

They sure are advertising the “Oscar” type movies tonight.

8:16 – Steve Carrell just came out of the floor. Outstanding Variety, music or Comedy show: Winner – The Daily Show!

Outstanding Variety,Music, or comedy special. Winner: Tony Bennett! Rock On!

8:23 – ACCOUNTANTS IN THE HOUSE!

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a miniseries or movie: Winner – Judy Davis, the Starter Wife. She’s not there to accept. Bathroom break?

8:25 – CORPORATE EXECUTIVE IN THE HOUSE!

8:31 – Outstanding made for TV movie – Winner: Wounded Knee! It’s going to win more awards than the Sopranos.

8:35 – Joisy Bois! Er, the Jersey Boys. Seemed like they lip-synced the first one, but recovered well.

8:50 – Best Lead Actress in miniseries or movie: Winner – Helen Mirren. She looks great, BTW.

GREAT RANT going on right now!

8:51 – Directing miniseries or movie (You think wounded knee or broken trail will win?) No, it’s Masterpeice Theater (better say that with a British accent!). Now, for writing (miniseries). Winner: Materpiece Theater. Cool!

9:04 – Al Gore gets an Emmy for CurrentTV. I think there might be a recount, though.

9:07 – Brad Garrett just made a great boobie joke. Individual performance in variety or music program: Winner – Tony Bennett! He just thanked Target just like a NASCAR driver after he wins.

9:14 – Guest actor/actress in a comedy series – Stanley Tucci and Elaine Stritch. Salma was robbed!

9:15 – Directing in comedy series. Winner – Richard Shepard, UGLY BETTY!!! The pilot did rock BTW.

Writing for a comedy series: Winner – Greg Daniels, The Office I had a feeling they’d win this one.

9:19 – What the heck is Seacrest wearing? At least now we have Wayne Brady. OK, outstanding reality competition. This is kind of funny how they are setting this up. OMG. This is hilarious! Anyway, WINNER: The Amazing Race. The Emmy voters really love that show. I was hoping DWTS would get it.

9:36 – Colbert and Stewart have a pretty good bit going. Outstanding Actor in Comedy Series: Winner – Ricky Jervais. OMG, they let Steve Carrell come onstage instead.

Lead Actress in Drama series: Sally Field! She still looks great. Although she just got bleeped.

9:50 – Oustanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: America Ferrera!!!!!! I knew it! “Truly amazing thing that happens when your drams come true”. Her fellow castmembers were truly excited.

9:55: Outstanding actor in a drama series. Winner: James Spader. Boy, did I get that one wrong.

One thing is sure, they probably won’t be doing this in the round again. That seems to be the most frequent comment: the seating sucks.

10:05 – Outstanding Comedy Series: Winner – 30 Rock. Shoulda been Ugly Betty. Oh, well. 30 Rock is pretty good, though.

They’re really rushing the show now, because they’re running behind.

10:10 – Outstanding Drama Series – Winner: The Sopranos.

Well, that’s the show. One final pic for my friend Ginger:

Continuing with my Emmy forecast, see this post for part 1, I will analyze the major categories and tell you who I think will win, and who I think SHOULD win. Remember, Ugly Betty News will be live blogging the Emmy awards, so please come and join us. We’ll make it a party in the comments! Now, on with the forecasting:

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Sally Field – Brothers and Sisters
Mariska Hargitay – Law and Order SVU
Patricia Arquette – Medium
Kyra Sedgwick -The Closer
Minnie Driver – The Riches
Edie Falco – The Sopranos

Who I think SHOULD win: Patricia Arquette. Her portrayal of Allison Dubois is like no other on television – she pulls off the suburban mom / psychic week after week, and we believe week after week. Who WILL Win: Sedgwick. She’s due, and her performance on The Closer has been more than worthy of recogniton.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Tina Fey – 30 Rock
Felicity Huffman – Desperate Housewives
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – New Adventures of Old Christine
America Ferrera -Ugly Betty
Mary-Louise Parker – Weeds

Who I think SHOULD win: Surely you jest. Ferrera should win this going away. Who WILL Win: Ferrera. She gets more face time than all the others (being on an hour show), and she is absolutely lovable, funny, and believable.

I’ll give you one more today one with an Ugly Betty twist:

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Jaime Pressly – My Name is Earl
Jenna Fischer – The Office
Conchata Ferrell – Two and a Half Men
Holland Taylor – Two and a Half Men
Vanessa Williams – Ugly Betty
Elizabeth Perkins – Weeds

Who I think SHOULD win: Can you guess? Williams, of course. Wilhelmina is one of the most compelling characters on television. Who WILL Win: Fischer. Her performance in the finale of The Office was subtle and romantic. It’s hard to sympathise with Wihelmina. As much as I love Williams, I think the Emmy will go to Fischer.

More to come…

In this week’s edition of Newsweek, there in a transcript from a two-hour Emmy roundtable discussion held with Masi Oka (Heroes), Sally Field (Brothers and Sisters) , Julia Louis-Dreyfus (New Adventures of Old Christine) ,Jeremy Piven (Entourage), and Ugly Betty’s own America Ferrera. It starts off talking about how starstruck Ferrera was about meeting Sally Field:
When two-time Oscar winner Sally Field arrived for our first-ever Emmy Roundtable, America Ferrera, the radiant young star of ABC’s freshman hit series “Ugly Betty,” stayed bolted to the floor. “I’d go up to her, but I’d just say something dumb,” Ferrera said. “All I could [...]
Post from: Ugly Betty News

When two-time Oscar winner Sally Field arrived for our first-ever Emmy Roundtable, America Ferrera, the radiant young star of ABC’s freshman hit series “Ugly Betty,” stayed bolted to the floor. “I’d go up to her, but I’d just say something dumb,” Ferrera said. “All I could say is ‘Hi.’ I mean, what do you say to Sally Field?”

Then comes the roundtable, many parts of which are fascinating. The single most intriguing quote from America Ferrera was this:

I had a friend who is a writer, and he wrote this beautiful, beautiful script and I fell in love with it. I said, this is me, I have to do this. For a while it was a possibility and then it was, like, Well, listen, the producers don’t want—they’re looking for someone who’s blond and who has, you know, lighter skin. And basically that was it. I didn’t even get to fail on my own. It was the first time I felt really angry. And so I went out and bleached my hair. I was 17, and it was the first time I’d done something out of anger. I bleached my hair and put on lily-white powder makeup—whiteface, I guess. But my friend called me up and was, like, “I get it, I understand that it’s warped and twisted and it sucks. But you still don’t have the part.”

Sometimes I forget that the Hollywood seems to be exempt from the usual fair hiring practices by which the rest of us in the business world have to abide. They can literally reject you because you don’t have the right shade of skin, or your nose is shaped the wrong way, or, God forbid, you’re not a size zero. It is wonderful to see Ferrera triumph through it all.

Here are some more Ferrera exerpts from the roundtable:

Ferrera: I didn’t start acting professionally until I was 17, and I had a really small agent and manager, and they were sending me out for anything—bail-bondsman commercials, whatever. And I never got a single callback for anything. Because they’d always say, “Can you speak English with a bad Spanish accent?” They were always, like, “We don’t get it—you’re Latin but you don’t sound Latin.” Even my own family, my own friends, they would say to me, “Look, we think you’re really talented, and it’s not that we don’t believe in you—we just don’t believe that industry is accepting of any kind of variety.”

Do you feel a certain obligation as a role model for young women and Latina women?
Piven: I do. Oh, I’m sorry. [Laughter]

Ferrera: I feel like what the show is doing—and not just what they’ve done for Latinos or for young girls but for the gay community—has been immense. The show does it, so I don’t feel like I have to go about my days preaching it.

[on the new culture of celebrity]

Ferrera: Anyone with a phone is a paparazzi. They sit there and take pictures with their phone and they think you don’t see them. They don’t even ask. Sometimes you feel like an animal in the zoo.

Didn’t you expect this?
Ferrera: I don’t know. I understand where it comes from. I mean, I grew up worshiping people like Sally Field, and when you meet them, they mean so much to you that you’re hoping that it’ll be a life-changing experience. But you just can’t be that for everyone you see. It’s exhausting. When do I get to shut it off? I know that sounds like complaining, but at the same time there is a lack of respect.

let’s end with a question about the big night. Is there any part of it that you’re not looking forward to?
Ferrera: The red carpet is the most nerve-racking, isn’t it? The focus is all on something I’m just not comfortable with. The whole point is to stand there so people can criticize you—What are you wearing? It’s a meat market.

Louis-Dreyfus: Who are you wearing!

Ferrera: I’m not saying I’m against red carpets, but what’s really wonderful is sitting there and being a part of the celebration. And that red carpet doesn’t feel like a celebration.

The rest of the roundtable is wonderful, to hear the back and forth amongst the artists. Go check it out.
