Just Jared has some pics of America Ferrera checking her cell phone during a break in filming Ugly Betty.  Is this the new Betty?

As you can see, she is gorgeous, as exemplified by this one.  One of the photos is zoomed out a little, and you can see most of Betty’s coordinated outfit.  Yes, her clothes are no longer a fashionable but clashy mish-mash. 

She is striking, and almost indistinguishable from the glamorous Ferrera who graced the cover of Seventeen Magazine (shown above).

But, is this really Betty, or just America being her usual beautiful self?  This pic is zoomed in a little more, and you can clearly see the “B” necklace. 

Now, I don’t believe for one second that what we see in these pics is what Betty is going to look like, at least early in the season.  My guess is that this is “Ameri-Betty” (as Ferrera calls the state when she’s only partially in costume).  You can’t tell from these photos if the braces are gone (even if they weren’t in these pics, that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t come back on right before filming.

The same goes for the eyebrows (Ameri-Betty’s are perfectly shaped here). 

Also, the hair is all America.  My guess is that we’ll see Betty’s hair, eyebrows and glasses on top of this chic look.

Let me tell you about my love/hate affair with UGLY BETTY. On the one hand, it’s colorful, often hysterically funny, beautifully shot (in high-def) on location in my favorite city, New York, and is set within the publishing industry, something I know a little bit about, having worked on magazines all my adult life.

On the other hand it’s infuriating: sad, bittersweet and repetitive. It’s lead character, Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), seems to have not learned a thing in her four years working at Mode magazine; she remains too trusting, unable to read others’ personalities, and thus too willing to help those who are only going to stab her in the back in return. She is frustratingly unaware of the fact that there’s a fine line between being a sweet naïf and being a doormat.

I give more credence to this argument than the one that says Betty should be a fashionista by now after being at Mode for 3 years (although the show is entering its 4th season, theoretically Betty’s only worked there for 3).  Some people just do not have ‘the eye’ for fashion, no matter how much they are surrounded by people who do.

But the mere passage of time should have ensured that some of Betty’s innocence should have worn off by now.

Don’t get me wrong – the writers have a very fine line to walk here.  Sure, they have to address concerns like this; the show does tend to get repetitive.  At the same time, to borrow a phrase from executive producer Silvio Horta, Betty must retain her “heart”, else the show will lose a major ingredient in the show’s original popularity.

Betty has to grow, yet remain likeable.  I think in the season 3 finale, the writers mostly succeeded.  Yes, Betty’s actions treated Matt badly, but at the same time she was human in a perfectly understandable way.  That’s life; sometimes that which we desire is not what is right for others we love.  It’s one of the conflicts grownups face all the time – and Betty’s getting old enough to qualify for that distinction.

Next season, Betty will finally have that editor’s job, and she’ll finally lose the braces. I think these will be outward signs of more subtle changes in her character.  We’ll see if that happens.

It sure looks like Silvio Horta is going to keep his word, and keep the ‘heart’ in the show.

Spoilers after the jump!

About episode 2.14 (24 Candles):

Betty dreams of the perfect birthday party, complete with a horse and carriage and her boyfriend Henry (Christopher Gorham) as her knight in shining armor.

But Henry’s very pregnant ex, Charlie (Jayma Mays), turns up and causes trouble, as usual. So Gio (Freddy Rodriguez) steps in and gives Betty a night to remember.

Yes! As much as I hate Charlie, she sure knows how to stir things up. And, I see the love triangle is NOT over.

Wilhemina is trying to hide the fact that she’s got Christina at her house –and Christina is, thanks to the miracle of science, carrying the dead Bradford Meade’s offspring.

Wilhemina’s sister, Renee (Gabrielle Union) is dating Daniel Meade, which threatens Wilhemina’s plans to grab control of the Meade empire. And in a drunken moment, her assistant Marc nearly ruins everything by spilling the beans to Renee about the baby Christina’s carrying.

Hoo-boy! As you remember from “Four Thanksgivings and a Funeral“, Marc is one of the most hilarious drunks on TV.

By the way, in the third of “Ugly Betty’s” five post-strike episodes, (that’s episode 2.16 for you folks keeping score at home) Betty tries to patch things up with Charlie by throwing her a baby shower, during which Charlie goes into labor. Not surprisingly, Betty and Henry’s relationship is put to the test again.

Labor during the baby shower! Please,please,please let Marc be there! He could be a modern day version of Prissy from Gone With The Wind. Can you just see him saing, “Push! Push!”, then turning his head and taking a whiff from his inhaler?

I’m psyched. It looks like the coming partial season is going to be hilarious!

There are two dolls in the collection – a cloth doll and a traditonal Madame Alexander doll. I really like the traditional, but those generally do not show the subject smiling, so we can’t see those wonderful braces of Betty’s. The cloth doll has the braces in all their glory.

Here’s something interesting: apparently, there is a Madame Alexander Desperate Housewives collection as well.

There is obviously a whole world of collectible dolls out there I knew nothing about.  :)

There are some interesting things afoot for our favorite Ugly Betty characters, and also for former cast member Alan Dale (Bradford) !

Chris Gorham, who plays TV’s hottest nerd, Henry, recently talked about the Betty/Henry relationship in an interview at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He said, “Well, I’m such a fan of Betty that I just want her to be happy. I think she’s very happy right now, but they have some tough times coming up, because that baby’s comin’ out, and it’s Henry’s baby.”

I wish someone would ask him why Henry doesn’t sue for custody, (it would make for great, soapish melodrama and many comedic moments!). But, that’s not where the writers seem to be going.

Will Henry be going back to Tucson? He says this: “That’s the plan. He didn’t really have a dad growing up, and so it’s really important for him to go do that.” So, it looks like we’ll have another Benry Cliffhanger when the WGA strike ends.

Speaking of upcoming possibilities – Alan Dale, who played the recently deceased Bradford Meade, will be in the London production of Spamalot! So much for preferring drama over comedy.

About coming back to Ugly Betty, Dale says, “I don’t think so. I think I’m finished. I think I’m going to go work on the stage now, and I’m going to get into the Guinness Book of World Records as the guy that died of a heart attack most often on television.”

See? The guy’s funny!
