As if you couldn’t tell already, Michael Urie and Becki Newton are best friends on and off the set of Ugly Betty:

On the set of “Betty,” they are “besties,” as Dallas-native Urie puts it. They were sort of thrown together when they both came to New York City to film the pilot in 2006. Neither actor had done a series and only had a few lines in the pilot, but Juilliard-educated Urie improvised a way to make a mark for himself and Newton as a duo.

“I said, ‘What if I just link arms with you and we’ll walk out of the scene that way?’” remembers Urie, 27.

After the pilot wrapped, Urie didn’t expect anything to come from it. When the show was picked up and went into production, he says he was surprised he was still on board. “I had to come in for a costume fitting. I was really nervous and didn’t know what to expect and then I ran in to Becki,” he says. “We were so happy and relieved to see each other. I don’t know if we remembered each other’s names. We said [to each other], ‘Hopefully we won’t get fired.’”

The two have been seen everywhere together ever since.  As reported here, Urie and Newton were a hit at the Hot in Hollywood AIDS benefit this past August: (after jump)

On a stage in Hollywood, Michael Urie, dressed in silver pants, a silver shirt, a brown wig and mutton chops gruffly emotes the cheesy Barbra Streisand-Neil Diamond ballad “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” to his partner in television crime, Becki Newton. Sporting a prosthetic schnozz, Newton belts out the bathetic lyrics before an adoring audience.

It sounds like a scene of “Ugly Betty,” but the send-up of the duet was actually part of an AIDS benefit produced this summer by Jaime Pressly of “My Name Is Earl” and currently available on YouTube.

“We turned into an all-out brawl,” says Newton, 29. “We made it like Barbra and Neil hated each other.”

They really took off as a ‘couple’ in the THanksgiving episode last year, both on and off screen:

Their friendship was forever cemented when they rehearsed last season’s Thanksgiving episode. Marc and Amanda have decided not to go their respective homes for turkey and they’re hanging out at the Mode offices, trying on evening gowns and acting out songs from “Dreamgirls.” Newton noticed that Michael’s dress had a very high slit and she wondered what he was wearing underneath.

“Michael said they gave him little shorts to wear. I said, ‘Let’s see.’ So he lifted the dress and I got a glimpse of one of his testicles. I shrieked in horror,” Newton recalls. “Thank God the cameras weren’t rolling because it would be on YouTube. I could not keep it together for the rest of the day.”

Urie also revealed a little about season 2:

Urie reveals that Marc’s boss, Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) will be marrying the Meade patriarch. Victoria Beckham is a bridesmaid. “I have a scene with Vanessa, Vera Wang and Posh Spice. Can you guess who’s not getting attention that day?” quips Urie.

He also says that Betty’s dad, Ignazio (Tony Plana), will be stuck in Mexico due to immigration problems.” And little Justin (Mark Indelicato) will appear as a Mode magazine intern in the second episode.

And down the line, probably next spring, “Ugly Betty” will do an all-musical episode. “I think the songs are going to be by Marc Shaiman,” he says.

If that’s so, the composer would be smart to write a duet for Urie and Newton. Of his co-star, Urie says, “She’s the funniest hot girl on TV.”

I was hoping they’d do the musical episode during February sweeps, but I guess it’s going to take a while to compose the songs and get rehearsals down.  Can’t wait – the season starts this Thursday, September 28!.

I thought it was interesting that Newton said that the portayal of Mode Magazine wasn’t that far off the mark, except her counterpart in real life would be doing actual work. 

All in all, a great look at Fashion Week.  And who better to give it to us?

Also, tonight, Secretaries Day is airing.  This was the great episode which had many scenes at “The Middle Ages”, including a great mechanical horse riding scene, and the wonderful inside joke about Amanda’s video resume which included a part as a “serving wench” in a commercial for the Middle Ages.  It was an inside joke because the actress that plays Amanda, Becki Newton, played an overenthusiastic waitress in an Olive Garden commercial:

Yes, that’s really her.

Finally, I want to announce a new feature we’ll be starting here. As we countdown to the premiere of season 2, we’ll be having our own premiere; a new profile feature called “Not Ugly At All” We will not only profile each cast member, we’ll profile his/her character, and throw in some whimsical facts as well. I don’t know if Urie and Newton have good voices or not (we’ll find out in sweeps, I guess), but I’m assuming they were going for comedic effect as Streisand and Diamond. And it IS funny. But America Ferrera? Who knew she could sing that well?

Just a typical night in Hollywood. 

All transpired at the aforementioned Hot In Hollywood  I told you about, which occurred this past Saturday night.  USA Today has the lowdown:

…A bigger spender at the auction was Ugly Betty star America Ferrera, who bid $35,000 for a Toyota Prius.

“I already drive a hybrid Highlander, so now I have two hybrids,” said Ferrera, who was heading to [Randolph] Duke’s home today to shop for an Emmys dress.

Ferrera’s Betty co-stars Michael Urie and Becki Newton dressed up as Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand to sing You Don’t Bring Me Flowers. “It was a big fight, but Becki’s playing Barbra and I’m playing Neil,” cracked Urie.

“We’ve been practicing it on set every day,” Newton added.

Ferrera took the stage to sing a number from Gypsy. Crossing Jordan’s Jerry O’Connell was her backup dancer. Earlier, O’Connell was sweating bullets over his drag costume — a woman’s wig, high heels, underpants and a hot-pink sparkly bikini top that showed off more than he would have liked. “You can see everything,” he sighed.

The bit was inspired by a Broadway trip that Ferrera took this summer with O’Connell and his wife, Rebecca Romijn. The trio joined Newton and Urie to see Gypsy starring Patti LuPone, who plays Urie’s mom on Betty.

First, the car:  Ferrera is to be commended for bidding $35k for the Prius.  Before that point, bidding on items had been kind of low, so America got ‘em going good.  She helped a great cause in the process, so Kudos, America.

Singing from Gypsy with Jerry O’Connell dancing behind her in drag?  Somebody, please get me video!!!  That’s all I’ve got to say about that. Finally, I guess I know whose dress (Randolph Duke) she is wearing to the Emmys!

I think You Don’t Bring Me Flowers would have even been better if Urie had taken Streisand’s part. 

All in all, it looks like it was a fine, entertaining evening, with a lot of money raised for AIDS causes.

I only wish I had some performance videos for you from the show, but alas, not yet.

 Remember, the “Betty-fied” complete first season of Ugly Betty will be released on August 21.  I can’t wait!
