My FIRST guess would be that this was a side excursion, and not part of a scene for Ugly Betty.  Actually, I hope I’m wrong and that this was filmed and will make it to the final cut of the episode.  The two are so cute here (not to mention the dolphin)!

I think Mark REALLY enjoyed this.  On Twitter, on the morning of October 5th, Indelicato tweeted, “starbucks, then swimming with the dolphins with Ana! this willget my mind off of everything. oh by the way i really did write a song ”

Four hours later, he tweeted this: “I had one of the most amazing, emotional, spiritual experiences of my life like 10 minutes ago.”

From what I have heard from other people who have done this, he was definitely talking about swimming with the dolphins. 

Were SO many pictures from this past weekend I can’t possibly show them all to you, for many reasons (it’s complicated).  But, I will try to post the best ones, because there are some amazing photos out there, especially of America Ferrera.  Interestingly, I have yet to find a pic of Michael Urie, but I’m going to keep trying.

Runners, walkers, and supporters of the FITNESS Mind, Body, Spirit Games enjoyed live music, massages, and wellness classes.

Ana accepted a check for $10,000 on behalf of Developing Artists Theater Company, which is a nonprofit whose mission is providing multicultural children 9-18 with performing arts opportunities.  Excellent!

This had to have been quite an event.  Bob Harper was there!    Seriously, I love the Biggest Loser star trainer.

I have to wonder who has a more vigorous workout: Ana Ortiz or Vanessa Williams.  Probably Williams, I would say.  It takes a lot more work to maintain a Hollywood body the older one gets.  Of course, that’s taking nothing away from Ortiz.  She just gave birth, and she looks fabulous!

Way to go Ana, for helping out with a wonderful cause, and helping to promote fitness!

Adam Rodriguez

Rodriguez will play Bobby, an old flame of Hilda. "He’s an old high school boyfriend, and  [he comes] back into their lives," said Rodriguez.

Certainly, this is the character we’ve heard about – the one that is “mobbed up” and has a Hilda-related storyline, right?

"A little romance buds, and there’s some drama to go along with it.", he adds.

When asked which sister he would be involved with (Hilda or Betty), Rodriguez was purposefully vague. 

"Maybe a little bit of both," he said with a laugh. "We’ll see how it turns out, but it’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s really funny."

Rodriguez will definitely appear in five episodes, but his stay on Betty is likely to be extended, according to a source, TV Guide says.

Mr. Rodriguez was in New York promoting his role in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself.

I really believe that this is going to be one of the more fun story lines early in season four, if I am guessing right that there will be a “light” romantic triangle between Hilda, Bobby, and Archie (played by Ralph Macchio and ironically, last-named “Rodriguez”).

I don’t know why, but a love triangle involving Hilda promises to be more fun than one involving Betty, I believe.

“The sooner the better,” she says.  “We’re definitely looking forward to having a playmate for her.”

She was recently at an event at NYC’s Double Tree Metropolitan Hotel, wheeling little Paloma around.  “I brought her out because I couldn’t get a babysitter,” she says.

Welcome to parenthood, Ana.    I can really relate to how she describes the baby’s effect on her:

“She just started smiling,” Ana says. “She’s like [smiles] ‘a-ha.’ And it’s like [theatrics] melt, melt, melt, melt. That’s her latest thing – smiling. It’s always in the morning, and it’s like she’s trying to laugh. It’s almost like she’s coughing – like a cat coughing up a hairball. It’s so cute.”

As I recall, the funniest baby faces usually meant it was about time for a diaper change.

Having Paloma has also enhanced her relationship with husband Noah Lebenzon.

“It’s incredible,” she says. “It’s so much deeper. Before, you’re together, but there’s never that sense of ‘til death do you part, right? When she came along, I was like ‘oh yeah, now I get ‘til death do you part.’ We are together forever. There’s no one I respect more as a man and as a dad. He’s surpassing my dreams. I’m really lucky. Today is the one day he couldn’t babysit. He’s been changing diapers, he’s been getting up in the middle of the night walking her around, he’s been so hands-on and he still manages to be like ‘baby, you look beautiful. My God, you’re so sexy, you’re so beautiful.’ I’m like ‘are you for real?’”

The baby has also kept Ana close to her on-screen son, Mark Indelicato.  “Mark and I are inseparable,” she says. “His mom has become my fairy godmother because she’s been helping me so much with the baby, too.”

Get to work, Noah!  We expect an announcement soon.

Guess who else is nominated in this category?  Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz. 

Will Ferrera lose once again to someone on 30 Rock?    Just kidding.  Hayek was VERY funny on 30 Rock and would deserve the award if she wins.

There’s no TV Movie Drama category, or certainly Ortiz would have been nominated for her work in Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story, as was the case with the Imogen Awards.

The ALMA Awards, in their 15th year, celebrate Latino achievements in film, TV and music.  This year they will be hosted by Eva Longoria Parker.

Salma is also receiving a special achievement award, the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence. 

For the testosterone set, Ugly Betty’s Tony Plana and Mark Indelicato (yeah!) received nominations as Best Actor in a TV Comedy. 

Also of Ugly Betty note: alum Freddy Rodriguez was nominated for his work in Nothing Like the Holidays, along with co-star Elisabeth Peña.

Ugly Betty honorees in the behind-the-scenes category include Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta as executive producers, and hairstylist Mary Ann Valdes.

The ALMA awards will be held/filmed September 17 at the Royce Hall Auditorium at UCLA and will air Friday, September 18 (8:00 to 10:00 p.m., ET/PT), on ABC.

The Imagen Awards were established in 1985 by Helen Hernandez and producer Norman Lear to encourage and recognize positive portrayals of Latinos in the media.

America Ferrera won Best Actress in Television (an award I was surprised she did NOT win last year).

Ana Ortiz won best supporting actress in Television; she has long deserved recognition for her great work in Betty.  Based upon the spoilers we’ve heard thus far, I think this coming season will offer more opportunities for accolades for Miss Ortiz, if Betty can survive the Friday night curse.

Speaking of Ortiz, Betty did NOT win Best Primetime Television Program because it was beaten by  a TV movie that Ana Ortiz co-starred in: Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story.  We first told you about Ortiz’s work on the docu-drama here.

Perhaps the greatest honor of all, though, went to Ugly Betty executive producer Silvio Horta, who was presented the Creative Achievement Award.

Interestingly, Beverly Hills Chihuahua won Best Feature Film. 

Noticeably absent were the categories of actress in a feature film and supporting actress in a feature film. They were eliminated from contention this year because they failed to meet the minimum number of entries required for award consideration.

“I think she’s going to be hysterical because she’s very vain, and she likes her tight outfits. She’s such a crack-up, but she also loves being a mother. I think that’s where she gets the most pride, from her son and her family.”

True.  They had a great opportunity at the end of last season, but I understand why Ana’s pregnancy wasn’t written into the show.  With the attention of the plot lines so scattered, not enough attention would have been given to any hypothetical storyline about a Hilda pregnancy.  Would have been cool, though.  Maybe they’ll go with the idea of a Hilda pregnancy being a political scandal for Archie.

Ortiz says she’d love to see Elena back, but it isn’t likely to happen.  She does say, when asked about Hilda playing matchmaker for Papi, “That’s genius! I’m gonna pitch that. That’s hysterical. She could set him up with one of her salon customers and keep trying to do that, and it’s always a disaster.”

She then makes a good point: the Suarez family is stuck in Queens, and never gets to have screen time with the show’s wonderful guest stars.  “Yes! I always tell the producers, ‘They have to come to Queens! Every once in a while, you’ve gotta bring some of these fabulous guest stars to Queens. Or else let us go to Mode once in a while!’ But yes, I get jealous of the guest stars; I get jealous of the clothes they get to wear.”

About working with Ralph Macchio: “It was really fun. I remember him from back in the day, and I was a little starstruck at first. But he’s so normal.”  (Ana, I’ll try not to read too much into your saying “was fun” instead of “is fun”. 

She mentions the move to Friday and implies the storylines will get edgier with Ugly Betty airing Friday nights at 9.  “They’re really going to push the envelope even more.”  Hmmm.  I hope I can still watch the show with my kids.  It’ll be great, regardless, I’m sure.

Then, Kristin reopens the old wounds, asking who Betty should be with.  Ana, plays coy, then picks a side:  “Honestly, I think Betty should be with Betty for a while. It’d be really interesting for her to get back into that Betty groove and leave these guys in the dust for a little while and work on herself—get into a professional groove even more. But if I had to pick…It’s a hard choice. They’re all so juicy. I’m a little partial to Gio because it’s Freddy Rodriguez. I mean, c’mon.”

Besides, it turned out that Chris Gorham has a darker side we didn’t know about.  Those who watched Harper’s Island know what I’m talking about.

He doesn’t give an entire list, but Slezak is operating under the assumption that Vanessa Williams is a hands-down favorite for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her portrayal of Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty.  And, although I agree (she’s shown some incredible range in season 3), we Vanessa Williams fans have been burned before when it comes to television’s highest honor.

Williams has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ugly Betty seasons 1 and 2, but she was beaten by Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl) in 2007, and Jean Smart (Samantha Who?) in 2008. 

Considering those two shows have been canceled, perhaps it’s finally Vanessa’s turn?  Maybe Williams will be the favorite this year.

Slezak lists four dark horses for the supporting actor/actress awards.  He gives a nod to Keir Gilchrist, United States of Tara,  Hamish Linklater, The New Adventures of Old Christine.  He then says the following about Michael Urie: 

Watching Marc strive for love and a better career proved alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, and proved Urie is every bit as valuable to the Ugly Betty cast as the more heralded Williams and America Ferrera.

I couldn’t agree more – like I’ve said, Urie has absolutely shined this past season, becoming almost a co-star.  Granted, the writers gave him more to work with than Becki Newton or Eric Mabius (who was also great this year!), but Michael ran with it.  I’d love to see him get the nomination, but it’s hard to break past the usual suspects (Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Cryer, half the cast of Entourage).  We’ll see.

Finally, Slezak gives props to Ana Ortiz.  In the past, I’ve clamored for Becki Newton to get a Supporting nomination instead of Ana, but this year, Ana probably deserves it a little more.  (Sorry Becki – it’s not you – the writers struggled all year with Amanda).  Ana Ortiz, however, has not only been hilarious at times, but she got her drama on several times (most notably, episode 3.12, Sisters On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown – not my favorite episode, but Ortiz had some great scenes nonetheless).  AND, she had two romances!

All this being said, most likely Vanessa Williams will be the only cast member to get a supporting nomination.  I don’t think the Academy was very fond of Ugly Betty’s second season, and they probably won’t give Ugly Betty the look it deserves for season 3, which is a shame.

But, here’s hoping they ALL get nominations!

“This has been an amazing first week. She is so beautiful it is staggering”, she said, speaking of newborn daughter Paloma Louise Lebenzon.  (Hopefully we’ll have a picture soon!)

Ortiz tells a wonderful story about the generosity of co-star America Ferrera, her on-screen sister.  On Paloma’s birthday, once Ana, her husband Noah Lebenzon, and baby Paloma were alone, after all the friend and family had left she got a delivery to her room of three dozen freshly baked cookies and ice cold milk from Ferrera and her boyfriend, Ryan Piers Williams. 

“How she found a place to deliver freshly baked cookies at 11 p.m. on a Saturday is beyond me, but she did. How cool and thoughtful is that?”, Ana asks.

It’s wonderful to see the cast is still “family” – I think it adds to the on-screen chemistry.  This dynamic means that, even though Ferrera and Ortiz have completely different body types, and even more different accents, they are fully believable as sisters.

I hope Ana is getting her rest, because filming begins soon, and we hear she’s going to be fending off mobsters.  She’ll need all of her strength!

Question: Regarding Ugly Betty, got any spoilers that don’t involve Matt and Betty? –Kelcy
Ausiello: Mode’s getting a new editor! Her name’s Amber, she’s in her 20s, she’s Asian, and is a master at the backhanded compliment. Casting is under way. Also, I’m hearing (and already laughing) about a possible mob subplot involving Hilda.

Interesting news about the new editor.  I like the backhanded compliment idea because it’ll add some missing snarkiness to the show (if you’ll remember, Charlie did this sort of thing all the time.)  It’s entirely possible that this character will be a rival to Betty, and will give America Ferrera a chance to show off her reactive comedic chops again.  Marc would still insult Betty directly, letting America use that “I can’t believe you just said that” look, and the new editor could say something that would cause Betty to use her “I’m trying to work this out to see if it’s an insult” look.

Of course, the new editor could be an ally to Betty (kind of a surrogate Christina).  After all not EVERYONE at Mode has to be mean to Betty when they first encounter her.

As for the mob subplot with Hilda, this is extremely intriguing.  Hopefully, Archie’s not mobbed up, but even if he is, this opens up all kinds of story lines, and I can see how Ana Ortiz would really embrace the story.  You can tell, the producers have been looking for a good story to tell at the Suarez house that fits the overall fell of the show – I think this might just do the trick.
