Speaking of Becki Newton, if you haven’t checked out Amanda’s blog at Mode Online, you really should. It’s pretty much updated every Thursday or thereabouts.
The Ugly Betty staff writing it (I don’t know if it’s the writers, Newton herself, or someone else), give us a pretty good insight into the muddied mind of Ms Tanen Sommers. Whether she’s giving her take on the events in the previous episode of Ugly Betty, or pontificating about world events, you usually finish the post saying, “Huh?” But in a good way.
Last Thursday’s post was about the events of episode 3.07, Crush’d . She tells how wonderful it is to have a roommate. But first, she waxes philosophical:
Meanwhile, I’d like to point out that it’s no wonder Earth is a woman. If it were a man, there would just be one season all year long, with a temperature perfect for wearing a T-shirt and cargo shorts… maybe a drop of a few degrees here and there to warrant a beer-stained college sweatshirt. I’ve also always wondered how Mother Earth and Father Time ended up having Baby New Year, but that’s for another blog.
She then proceeds to tell us about going through Betty’s closet, with the intent of trying on her clothes to mock each outfit, and then discovering something:
All those patterns, all those colors… you know how when you drive past a crash site, you can’t help but look? I not only looked, I got out of the car and threw myself into the wreckage. It started as some sick thrill, to put on Betty’s hideous outfits and gross myself out. But things didn’t go according to plan, because, as you could probably figure out, I looked hot. And believe me, I tried real hard to look bad, but outfit after outfit, each one looked better on me than the last. I had been making fun of her clothes for so long, but I realized that was wrong of me. I shouldn’t have mocked her outfits, I should’ve mocked her.
Heh. Gotta love Amanda. She says out loud what we’re sure people like her are usually thinking. For instance, her take on Jesse:
Just because you’re roommates with someone, doesn’t mean you can share everything. I kind of learned that one the hard way when I made out with some guy that Betty liked. To be fair, I didn’t know she liked him. And my making out with him was kind of a good thing – it was sort of like my seal of approval for Betty’s choice of crush. She’ll realize that in time.
Nothing like the Amanda seal of approval.
Anyway, there is much more. Check it out for past entries, and look for another post (hopefully) this Thursday. It’s hilarious.

Here are a couple of photos of Ugly Betty’s Becki Newton at the Fountainebleau Miami Beach Grand Opening recently. In the first, with her hubby Chris Diamantopoulos, they look like the perfect pair. Becki always looks wonderful from the back :)
The two are, of course, a gorgeous couple. Perhaps you’ve seen the photos of the two of them at Miami Beach around the same time. (No, I don’t think Becki is pregnant)
But then, Becki does a solo shot from the front, and O. M. G.
Is it a hospital gown? The kind of smock you wear when having your hair done? That thing they make you put on when you’re having x-rays done?
Don’t get me wrong - Becki would be beautiful wearing, well, just about anything. And I love the colors. But, to my fashion layman’s eyes, the cut of this dress is just distracting. I know Becki takes fashion chances, and I appreciate that, but I’m just not feeling it.
Love the shoes, though.
So, tell me, UB fashionistas. I’ve always been up front that my fashion sense is pretty non-existent. So, I rely on you, because many of you are in the fashion biz, others are into fashion far more than I.
How do you think she looks?

Here is the promo for Ugly Betty episode 3.09, (When Betty Met YETI).
Competition gets fierce when Betty and Marc both apply to YETI, the Young Editors Training Program that could be their ticket out of assistant-land . . . but there’s only room for one of them. Meanwhile Justin makes an unlikely friend, Daniel finds himself attracted to Molly (guest star Sarah Lafleur) and Wilhelmina does her best to get Connor’s (Grant Bowler) attention.
So, either Marc or Betty will get voted off the island. Should be interesting. I’ve heard some whispers about what might happen, but you never know with the Ugly Betty writers. They do love to surprise us.
Molly will be back - good! There’s just something so likeable about her, even though her presence has caused a romantic mess. On the surface, we have a love quadrangle (Wilhelmina, Connor, Daniel, Molly), but I throw Betty into the mix and call it a love pentagon. Love stinks, yeah, yeah.
“Justin makes an unlikely friend” - is this the bully? Haven’t they already done this story? Or, maybe it’s a brand new story.
BTW, if Bernadette Peters is NOT in this episode, that gives us a clue about who wins the contest. In their press release about Peters’ appearance, ABC said this:
Peters will play Jodie Papadakis, a tough no nonsense magazine editor whom Betty idolizes and hopes to impress in her training program for aspiring young editors.
On a totally unrelated side note, I continue to be pleasantly surprised that Betty’s ratings are still creeping up. It’s no surprise that UB is still winning its slot in the women 18-34 demographic (for the 8th consecutive week) If this keeps up, they’ll be back to averaging 10 million viewers by Christmas.

Here is the full recap of Ugly Betty episode 3.08, Tornado Girl. The synopsis:
Betty needs Daniel’s help to prevent an issue of Mode from shipping that could result in a PR nightmare for the magazine. The problem is, he’s unreachable at a company retreat. Meanwhile, Hilda starts a clandestine beauty salon when the city turns down her permit for a legal business, and Connor’s fiance (guest star Sarah LeFleur) meets the Modies.
Thoughts: This was a GREAT episode. As I thought, there was a lot of comedy, but a lot of drama of the romantic kind as well.
The scene where Marc is speaking cryptically to Betty has got to be the funniest scene of the season. I’ve seen it three times and laughed every single time. “He Knnnoooowwwwssss”. Heh.
Besides Marc, I really loved Phil (who reminds me of a pudgy Billy Joel), and Molly. Molly is uber-charming: a little eccentric, joyous, slightly bubbly. Every time she was on the screen, my heart fluttered a little. I know, it’s weird, but LeFluer was that good. Maybe she’s my type, I don’t know.
The ending was, of course, bittersweet.
Claire’s one, big line in the episode came out of nowhere, and was quite a shock, even to a Detty dude like me. I can’t believe someone actually came out and said it. (Read the recap if you don’t know what she said).
Ana Ortiz and Ralph Macchio have some incredible chemistry. Much better than Eddie Cibrian (eye candy though he was). I hope the writers can keep Macchio around for a bit.
UB writers: I’m begging you - DO NOT WRITE CLIFF OFF THE SHOW! I’ve got a pretty good feel of the pulse of most UB fans, and trust me, you don’t want to do this, especially the way this episode ended. Cliff is far too popular a character.
Anyway, full recap after the jump!

Here is the video of “Get On With It” by Val Emmich, the song that was featured on Ugly Betty in episode 3.07 (Crushed).
I can tell you the mark of a good song: when a song sticks in your head after hearing it, even to the point where you hum it when you first wake up the next morning, that’s a pretty good sign.
Emmich has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season so far. In my experience, I’ve seen plenty of musicians in guest starring roles on television, and most of them ranged between forgettable and awful. But, Val Emmich has been charming without being overbearing. He’s got a future as an actor.
Yes, his character has broken Betty’s heart, but Jesse’s biggest fault has been misreading Betty’s intentions.
I really liked the snippet of his song “snowy day”. In it, he shows a lot of range. I’d say Val has a pretty good future as a musician, as well. :)
Now, dear readers, I have a question for you. If you had the opportunity to interview Emmich (hint, hint), what would you ask? Throw a few at me!

As you recall, I (and many others) wondered what is the storyline in the promo for Ugly Betty episode 3.08, Tornado Girl, where Wilhelmina seems to be shooting at the car Betty, Marc and Amanda are driving. (BTW, look at the promo closely. Marc is in the driver’s seat, but seems incapacitated, and Betty grabs the wheel). I think we may have a clue what might be going on, thanks to Kristin’s spoiler chat at EOnline:
Tonya in Las Vegas: I am loving Ugly Betty this season! Are Connor and Wilhelmina going to get serious?
The sexy new man-about-town himself, Grant Bowler, told us that things are about to get “very sparky” and “very hot,” so keep your flammables away from the screen. The minor glitch: He is a taken man. But Vanessa Williams promised she’s not giving up: “At this point, Connor is still engaged, and Wilhelmina is trying very hard to make that not happen.” And she does often get her way now, doesn’t she.
So, tell me what you think of this theory. The main storyline of tonight’s episode is that Betty has to rush to keep a disastrous issue of Mode from shipping. Now, I’m about 99% sure that Betty doesn’t have a car. So, my guess is the car that she’s (Marc’s) driving in the promo belongs to Connor’s fiance, and Wilhelmina thinks she’s shooting at the fiance. If true, it would kind of be like Alexis endangering herself and her brother in an attempt to kill their father.
It’s a theory, at least. The only question is, how does Connor’s fiance get involved, if I am right? Is she there when Betty tells Connor about the impending disaster? Or is Connor at the retreat, and the fiance at Mode by chance?
Or maybe I’m totally wrong. But, I’d say the chances are pretty good that Wilhelmina will be at the retreat, Connor will tell her that his fiance is on the way, and Wilhelmina will sneak away to attempt to kill her (she is in the woods, after all).
What do you think is going on? Regardless, we’ll find out tonight!

Ashley Jensen attended the LA BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Britannia Awards on November 7th. She represented Ugly Betty well in this beautiful black number.
The BAFTA/LA awards ceremony, the Britannia Awards, started in 1989 and happens in October/November each year. There are no awards given to films or TV programs, only to individuals. This year, Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Tilda Swinton and Stephen Frears were honored.
On the Ugly Betty front, shouldn’t Christina’s baby be due soon? By my best guess this past spring, Christina would be having her baby during November sweeps.
The two Ugly Betty characters in season 3 who really don’t have much to do so far are Ignacio and Christina. Hopefully, with the impending birth and the fact that so much of the plot revolves around it, we’ll see a Christina-centered episode.
You have to love Ashley Jensen. Her accent just makes me melt (although it also means I have to watch the show with closed captioning on)
:)
More Jensen photos after the jump!

America Ferrera attended the 2008 Glamour Magazine Women of the Year Awards ceremony, and looked wonderful doing it.
I’ll admit, this dress is quite bold for Ugly Betty star Ferrera. I love the colors, but I’m sure many would say that the dress is just too darned busy. I think it’s flashy and glamourous at the same time.
Ferrera spoke at the event, although I’m not sure if she actually introduced Hillary Clinton, one of the honorees (and a Ferrera hero). She did pose for photos with the senator and former first lady and presidential candidate.
Also honored at the event were Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Nicole Kidman, Tyra Banks, and many others.
America is such an intelligent and involved young woman. Even if she was not recieving honors last night, you can certainly bet she will be, many times in the future.
More pics after the jump!

Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera is set to star in the drama “American Tragic”. The film was penned by long-time Ferrera beau Ryan Piers Williams.
“American Tragic” centers on a young war vet, played by newcomer Ryan O’Nan, who sets off across the country with a buddy to find redemption. Ferrera will play his wife and Melissa Leo (”Frozen River”) his mother.
The movie will be exec produced by Ferrera, along with Sergio Aguero. It will be produced and distributed by the mini-studio Maya Entertainment. This is the second time Ferrera has worked with Maya - the first being “How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer.”
‘Tragic’, at least from the synopsis, seems to be the latest installment in a long tradition on this type of movie. They aren’t really my cup of tea; in my younger, more angst-ridden days, I would have been first in line to see it, followed by a trip to the coffeehouse to smoke clove cigarettes and discuss international politics. (hoo-boy, I’m dating myself!) I’ve long outgrown those days.
Yet, I love Ferrera’s acting so much, I’ll probably go see this - if it comes to my town. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now: Ferrera is a rising star; one day I’ll be reporting on her Oscar acceptance speech.
