With Father’s Day approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to honor Ignacio Suarez, the patriarch of the Suarez household on Ugly Betty, played by veteran actor Tony Plana.
Being a father myself, I am acutely aware of the shortage of any dads on television worthy of respect. Depending on the format of the show, we fathers are usually betrayed as bumbling idiots, or evil, or just absent. Considering how over-the-top most of the characters in Ugly Betty are, it is surprising just how true-to-life Ignacio really is.

There were so many great moments in this past week’s episode of Ugly Betty (episode 2.11 “Zero Worship”), it’s near impossible to fit them all into the weekly poll.  I’ve highlighted my favorite moments, but I put a “something else” option, because it’s really impossible to fit them all in.  Here were my favorites this week:

Wilhemina’s “welcome mat”.  Ahem.  Took me a couple of days to figure it out, when Marc mentioned something about Wilhelmina having a “welcome mat” and she said, ”I haven’t had a welcome mat since the 90’s”.   Or something like that.  Naughty, naughty.  But hi-larious!

Full recap for Ugly Betty episode 2.11, “Zero Worship”, which first aired January 10, 2008.

This episode was one of my favorites so far; Betty shined as the moral center (thank God she’s back!), and this was by far Daniel’s most sympathetic episode, but the night belonged to Marc.  He had more one liners than ever, and they were all funny!

Since I am going to forego making any resolutions this year, I thought it would be fun to make a few New Year’s resolutions for the Ugly Betty characters. These are the resolutions I would make, if I were each of them:

 Daniel: To keep working at being more responsible.  Daniel has made quite a turnaround this year, especially since Betty had her moments of going off the deep end.  But, he has a lot more work to do.  Wagering away a multi-billion dollar company in a sibling-rivalry paintball war isn’t exactly the height of maturity.

He is the calm in the middle of a million storms on Ugly Betty.  Actor Tony Plana plays Ignactio Suarez on the show, and although the character is a former undocumented immigrant and for years considered himself a murderer, he is by far the most “normal” person on the show.  With Santos gone, Ignacio is the much-needed grounding for the show, which would otherwise collapse of its own weight of eccentric characters.
