She beat out Keesha Sharp (Girlfriends), Tonye Patano – Weeds, Vivica A. Fox (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Game). Vanessa was beautiful and graceful in this long, flowing dress. She joined fellow Ugly Betty cast mate America Ferrera in appearing (and winning) at the awards show. Ferrera won Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

Ugly Betty itself was nominated for Best Comedy Series, but it lost out to Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. Congratulations Vanessa and America!

If you’ve seen this issue of the magazine before, you know that the cover extends into a fold-out, featuring all of the ones VF has proclaimed Hollywood’s new “it” girls.

Well, there’s our girl America on the far right.  Isn’t she absolutely gorgeous, all made up and in that spring pastel?  This Annie Leibovitz photo, I think, brings out the best in all the ladies featured (yes, even Juno’s Ellen Page, who appears to be trying to blend into her surroundings and go unnoticed).

Featured in this year’s stunning cover photograph, along with Ferrera (23) and Page (20) are Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), 24; Amy Adams (Enchanted), 33; Jessica Biel (I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry), 25; Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), 25; Alice Braga (I Am Legend), 24; Zoe Saldana (Vantage Point), 29; Elizabeth Banks (The 40 Year-Old Virgin), 33; and Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love), 29.

The March issue hits the stands Feb 12th.

This is America in her natural glory: no image-altering hanky panky, ala “The Box and The Bunny“.  I swear, the girl is drop-dead gorgeous.

In the interview, we learn some things about America that at least I haven’t heard before.  Read on for excerpts!

From the interview:

My family never lied about the fact that we didn’t have a lot. You just kind of have to play the cards you’re dealt.’ Coping with the departure of her father, whom she has not seen since, was just one of those cards. ‘It wasn’t easy, but as a kid you find ways to make sense of it. I remember just bits and pieces of that time in my life, but I do remember being so incredibly matter-of-fact. It wasn’t until I was older that I thought, “Damn, I never really grieved over that.” And there have been male figures in my life who provided that kind of fatherhood for longer than he was ever in my life.’

I’m starting to get an idea of why she is so grounded.  Things could have turned out totally differently.  And Ferrera seems to know that:

‘Very early on in my life, I was thinking, “Nobody cares who I am in this world. I could just be another kid who falls in the cracks, another pregnant teen or another druggie, and it’s not going to affect anyone but me.” I would sit on that bus and think, “That’s not going to be me. I’m going to do something with my life.”’

Ferrera also understands that Ugly Betty is more than just lighthearted fare: 

‘It feels good to be a part of a show that means more to people than just entertainment,’ she says, ‘and which confronts a lot of issues, like the portrayal of a Latin family with a father struggling for citizenship. Many people kind of see it as a pioneer show for their cause. Ugly Betty addresses these serious issues with humour, and that’s the easiest way to make people listen as opposed to being preachy and shoving it down their throats.’

That last statement tells me that she fully understands why Ugly Betty has such wide appeal. 

I cannot wait to read the full interview.  My advice?  Run out and grab the December issue of Marie Claire as soon as it hits the newsstands!

Ferrera appears confident, gorgeous, and slightly dismissive of the viewer: all key elements to the classic definition of sexy. There has been much outrage at Glamour magazine for altering Fererra beyond recognition for their magazine cover, but the way I view it, that’s just what they do at fashion/beauty magazines. I would imagine Ferrera or her agent signed off on it, if not agreed with it. There’s even a part of me that thinks the whole thing was by design; it matches almost too perfectly The Box and the Bunny from Season 1, and got a lot of people talking.

Nevertheless, these photos portray Ferrera as the beautiful woman she is.

And what do you know?  Just like the actress in The Box and The Bunny, Ferrera has been photoshopped to be somewhat skinnier.  It’s not horribly drastic, but apparent, nonetheless.  Especially if you look at another photo of Ferrera from the magazine:

Ferrera is a real woman, and she has curves. 

Not only is she on the cover, there is a full interview.  Here are some excerpts:

A year ago, when America Ferrera was moving out of her apartment, she tried to sell her furniture on Craigslist. But after she posted her cell phone number on the site along with her sister’s name, dozens of people stopped by her house; an item appeared in US Weekly; and her publicist called to admonish her. “She said something like, ‘Did you really try to sell your furniture on Craigslist?!’” recalls the star.OK, maybe Ferrera can’t do everything a regular gal can do anymore, but you’d never know it. When the 23-year-old actress arrives at a Los Angeles bistro for her Glamour interview, she is dressed in a gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans, no oversize sunglasses in sight. Later on, she’s planning to “veg on the couch” with her longtime boyfriend, aspiring filmmaker Ryan Piers Williams. For Ferrera, staying grounded comes easy: When she was growing up—as one of six kids being raised by a single mom—there was no room for diva behavior. When she announced that she wanted to be an actress, her brother rolled his eyes.

GLAMOUR: So 11 Emmy nominations for Ugly Betty, two new films in the works. You’re huge! AMERICA FERRERA: I feel like the stars have aligned in my favor—maybe I was good in a past life! What’s crazy is that when opportunities to work come along, they are countered by just as many opportunities to piss it all away. It’s like, “Congratulations, now we’re going to tempt you with every distraction possible. We’ll fly you to Vegas in a private jet, put you up in a five-star hotel….” Thank God I’m too busy to say yes. If this is my chance, I’d hate to look back and say I sacrificed it for partying.

GLAMOUR: Can you remember the first time you were followed by paparazzi?

AF: Yes, I was in New York City doing The View with Salma Hayek; it was the day Ugly Betty premiered. After the show I got chased by a paparazzo on a motorcycle for an hour. I remember thinking, Oh my God, this is crazy, they already care about me! When I finally got out of the car, the paparazzo yelled, “I thought I was following Salma Hayek!” Then he got back on his motorcycle and left. I thought, OK—that puts things into perspective.

GLAMOUR: How about walking the red carpet—love it or hate it?

AF: Personally, I hate it. You are expected to conform to every single expectation. People will say, “Try as hard as you can not to sweat on the red carpet.” Meanwhile you are super nervous, and there are tons of camera flashes, and people are screaming your name. It’s not fun—not for me, at least!
