Sometimes I forget, because of all the drama, just how funny America Ferrera is.  I especially like her good nature in the sections where her braces cause her spit uncontrollably.

She seemed to be funniest when paired with Freddy Rodriguez or Chris Gorham.

There’s a great section where each of the actors forgets his/her line.  Becki Newton is funny because, unlike the others, she does not change expression at all.

There’s a quick snippet of Eric Mabius doing the soft shoe.

Speaking of the full season DVD, what I most want to see is the “Enhanced Versions” of the episodes we’ve seen in the reruns this summer.  They would be worth the price of the set alone.  At Amazon.com, the description of the bonus features is:

“Going home to New York City, look who keeps popping up video commentary, webisodes, Betty Bloops, alternate takes, deleted scenes.”

I’m going to hopefully assume the “look who keeps popping up video commentary” is the same as the enhanced versions.  Woot.

I’m in heaven:  America Ferrera, Vanessa Williams, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton and Ashley Jensen have all volunteered their “kisses”.  I’m thinking Vanessa Williams, but I could be convinced to bid on others!

The kisses are an auction at UBid through December 12th, so don’t dilly-dally. 

The Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation funds research grants to help find a cure for cancers affecting women.

It also funds women’s shelters and offers financial support to organizations that raise awareness and address the problem of violence against women.

So, bid on a kiss – even if you are female!  (That sounds like something Amanda would say).  You’ll be helping a great cause, and get a one-of-a-kind bit of memorabilia.

Whew.  Time to check out Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Dirty Sexy Money, Brothers and Sisters and Samantha Who!

Actually, steaminess aside, the video reminds me that there were more good moments from season 2 than I remember.  For instance, I had forgotten the scene with Amanda and Marc where Marc says, “We’re at code fuchsia”. Amanda: “You got someone pregnant?” Marc: “That’s code NEVER”.

Also, I remember Wilhelmina’s big entrance as starting with her saying: “Let’s do this bitch”, when, after seeing this it’s obvious there was a comma: “Let’s do this, bitch” (the bitch, I’m assuming, was Marc).  It’s a small thing, but it’s interesting what you see the second time around (when you’re not liveblogging the episode).  That’s good reason to get the season DVD.

Ugly Betty, The Complete Second Season will be released September 9th (it’s almost here!).

It covers all of the major happenings, in both season 1 and season 2.

You know, it’s funny – in capsule form, season 2 doesn’t seem as disjointed as it did as the episodes unfolded.

The only story line they didn’t cover (unless I missed it), is Marc and Cliff.  But, so far, that story arc doesn’t intersect with the major ones, as, say, Stuart’s illness (which is relevant because it made Christina desperate, which made her agree to carry Wilhelmina’s baby).  But hopefully next year, Marc/Cliff will be incorporated into the rest of the story lines.

The video also hawks the Ugly Betty season 1 DVD, and reminds us that the season 2 DVD is coming out September 9th.

This is the mantra Betty Suarez repeated to herself on her first day at Mode. Of course, she then proceeded to walk face-first into a glass wall, but isn’t that the way it goes in the real world?

There are many lessons that young people could learn about the world of work from Ugly Betty, and that is the premise behind an upcoming book from Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky. “Find Your Inner Ugly Betty – 25 Career Lessons from TV Shows for Young Professionals” is a tome about the lessons young professionals can take away from watching their favorite sitcoms.

“The inspiration comes from the fact that ‘Ugly Betty’ is actually a really great example of a young professional getting her footing in the workplace,” Stransky says.

“So naturally, by taking a closer look at what she’s done right and wrong, you’re able to teach young people quite a lot that they can put to good use in their own jobs.”

Stransky gave thought to lessons learned as he was starting his career as a writer.

“I thought about the three post-collegiate jobs I’ve had and considered how advice about Betty’s situations could have been most helpful to me when I was starting out,” he said.

Well, hopefully he never fell off a mechanical steed, but we get the picture. Stransky touches on the one thing Betty has that may be more important than anything else: confidence.

“The gist of the advice is that confidence – and a belief in yourself – is sometimes more important than the skills you actually bring to the table,” he said.

“When Betty walked into the doors of Mode, she was obviously not a fashionista and was clearly out of place. But the one thing she had on her side was confidence and a willingness to put herself out there.”

Stranksy also touches on a very important issue to young workers: being very careful with your online image. Remember when Betty tried the online dating service (and how her co-workers found out almost immediately?). Stranksy says to be very careful with sites like Facebook and Myspace.

“It’s very easy these days for your boss – or potential boss – to find out everything about you online,” he said. “The thing is, they know all young folks are on these sites, and even if they can’t log in, they’ve got their own kids who may let them.”

Granted, most of us don’t have to deal with some of the unusual problems Betty faces every week. “But, in some ways I do think young professionals on television and those in real life are similar,” Stransky said. “Betty has issues with coworkers and her boss, and she’s always trying to figure out the right thing to do.”

Yes, good readers, there are Ugly Betty Valentine’s Day cards.  When I first saw these at Target, I worried about the cruelty that middle schoolers might perpetrate with cards they could hold out for “the ugly ones”.  But then I remembered that people who are picked on are some of the biggest fans of Ugly Betty – we would consider getting one of these as a badge of honor.

So, I thought this might be interesting – look these over, and tell me who you would send one to. It can be a character on the show, one of the actors, or someone in your life that you love. Which Valentine card would you choose? What “little note” would you write on the back of the card?” Here are the cards:

Me? I would definitely give the Wilhelmina Card to my wife. On the back, I’d write – “I know an ice queen. I watch and ice queen every week. You are no ice queen. Love ya!”

I would also give the Butterfly Card to Christina, with the note: “I love the way you carry the Spawn of Satan to save your husband. It’s so romantic!”

There are two dolls in the collection – a cloth doll and a traditonal Madame Alexander doll. I really like the traditional, but those generally do not show the subject smiling, so we can’t see those wonderful braces of Betty’s. The cloth doll has the braces in all their glory.

Here’s something interesting: apparently, there is a Madame Alexander Desperate Housewives collection as well.

There is obviously a whole world of collectible dolls out there I knew nothing about.  :)

Well, the WGA strike has caused an interesting situation.  Ugly Betty episode 2.11, Zero Worship, was originally scheduled to air last night, January 3rd.  ABC decided a few weeks ago to move it to January 10.  Yet, because we are dealing with merchandise, these releases at the ABC SeenOn store have to be planned well in advance.  So, this morning, you can purchase fashions from the episode before it actually airs! 

I guess you could call these “fashion spoilers”.

Now, remember, this episode revolves around Fashion Week, so some of the outfits are not what you’d normally see some of the characters wear.  Betty, in a DKNY pencil skirt?
