Ugly Betty season 3 is underway in the UK, and Diet Coke is a major sponsor.  They have launched a new, limited-edition Diet Coke bottle as a promotion, and recently had an exclusive photo shoot in Selfridges.
 

The photo shoot involved five Betty Suarez “look-a-likes”, and the video shows their transformations into Betty (time-shortened, of course).
The collector’s bottle was designed by Ugly Betty costume designer Patricia Field, and even comes with its own accessory collection so you can customize the bottle and put your own unique twist onto it.

You folks in the UK who watch Ugly Betty might have already seen this, but most of us in the US (outside of advertising insiders) have not.  This is a series of “idents” (which I’m taking to mean “video snippets identifying a show’s sponsor” – correct me if I’m wrong) for Diet Coke, which is a sponsor of Ugly Betty on Channel 4 and E4.

Since we’ve had such an interesting conversation lately about Ugly Betty’s Daniel and Betty relationship, this video really caught my eye.  It is to the beautiful song Este Corazon by RBD.  The video is from Verliebt in Berlin the German telenovela based on the Columbian Yo soy Betty, la fea.

My first impression is that this is the prettiest Betty I’ve seen (although the character’s name is Lisa in this version).  And, of course, as pretty as she already is, she gets really gussied up by the end.  Pah.

One of the things I find fascinating is the phenomenon of Ugly Betty-type shows around the world.  There seem to be versions in every culture, and almost every country.  The “Ugly Duckling taking on the world” theme is, I think, a universal one.

I like how they used Mika’s “Hey Betty (You Are Beautiful)”. 
This version appears to be more slanted toward comedy, with heavy influences from the Columbian telenovela.
I know tastes are cultural, but of all the Bettys we’ve seen around the world, this one seems the most attractive initially – (I think the braces make a huge difference in the American version).  And, let’s face it: Bea Alonzo is such a beautiful young woman, it’s kind of hard to disguise.   …read more

Since we’re talking about Ugly Betty being a worldwide phenomenon, I thought is was interesting that network ABS-CBN in the Philippines is introducing the cast of the their upcoming show “I Love Betty La Fea“. 
What is really cool is that this version of the show will draw from both the Columbian and the US versions of the show.  That’s absolutely brilliant, I think.
