No Paula Abdul For Ugly Betty
August 17, 2009 by Tom
Paula Abdul will NOT be appearing as a guest star on Ugly Betty after all. An ABC source confirmed to the LA Times that talks between Abdul and the network had fallen apart and that she definitely would not be appearing on the show, as had been rumored.
As reported, Paula was slated to play a temp who befriended Becki Newton’s Amanda. Dang it, I was really looking forward to that.
As we now know, Abdul will not be on Dancing With The Stars in either judge or contestant capacity. So, Paula will not be appearing on ABC anytime soon.
It would appear that the talks with ABC were a negotiating ploy; she no doubt still wishes to return to American Idol under her own terms. At least, that’s how I’m reading things.
This was my fear when I first heard that talks between ABC and Abdul were ongoing: that one of the parties was not serious about it.
If things turn around, it would be nice to have Paula on the show. But, as things stand, I don’t think it’s all that bad that Abdul won’t be guest starring on Ugly Betty. Didn’t they learn their lesson the last time they signed a hazy-headed drama queen as guest star?

aw =(
Altough i was looking forward to see Paula Abdul in UB, i’m agreeing with you, Tom.
I was watching the Today show this morning and Kathie Lee Gifford said she got a call from ABC asking if she was available to appear on Ugly Betty. She told them she was available but I don’t know if it anything is official yet.
What a pity
(But now I’m curious, will the storyline with a new friend with amanda still be?)
Sorry if I’m mentioning news items that you already know about, but Ausiello just posted this news item on his blog: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/08/20/ugly-betty-johnston-replaces-abdul-out/. I think that Johnston would be SO MUCH of a better fit for the role than Paula since Johnston seems to have that “wacky funny” aspect about her that makes her a much better fit on the set of Ugly Betty and for the show in general. I remember that she was in that “Celebrity Autobiography” event that Micheal Urie did since I watched the video that you posted. She was very funny.
I don’t recall there being THIS MANY casting announcements at the beginning of season 3. I hope that this is a sign that the show is investing itself 100% into getting the show back on track. But, I worry about the increasing size of the cast…
