Ugly Betty Gets A New Daughter For Wilhelmina

August 12, 2009 by Tom

sipaphotos440530-USA-Film-Take-The- It looks like the character Nico, Wilhelmina’s stubborn daughter, is returning to Ugly Betty.  However, she won’t be played by Jowharah Jones, who played Nico in season 1, but by America’s Next Top Model year three runner-up Yaya DaCosta.

OK, I was wrong.  At the end of Ugly Betty episode 3.24, The Fall Issue, Wilhelmina is stopped dead in her tracks when someone appears at her door.  I said at the time that the “who” couldn’t have been Wilhelmina’s daughter.  With this news, I’d say it’s all but certain.

I also said that the young, beautiful African American woman being cast over the summer probably wasn’t Nico.  Wrong again.  At the time, the casting call was for “Emily”, but those names are many times place-holders.

As for YaYa DaCosta, she was considered one of Top Model’s most memorable contestants.  She has since become a very successful model.  She’s also had a handful of roles on TV and in film, and most recently on All My Children as Cassandra.  She looks to be a perfect fit for Ugly Betty, and the role of Nico.

It’ll be a little weird, having a new Nico, but it has been a few years since she appeared, and that does make a difference.

I wonder if, after discovering her maternal side with baby William, Wilhelmina will have a new relationship with Nico?

During her time on All My Children Yaya worked with David Rasche who plays Cal Hartley. I wonder if they will be working together again.

oh, I liked the old nico!! But well, what can i do right?
So yeah, apparently the one who willie saw wasn’t fey sommers… unfortunatly. That would have been so awesome. But oh well, it’s good anyway. Thanks for all the updates, tom!!

    Yay!
    I loved Yaya on ANTM.
I was hoping the mystery person was going to be Fey, but if it’s not her I’m glad it’s Nico.

I think she was in the movie “Take The Lead” with Antonio Banderas and I thought at the time, she was beautiful…never knew she was on ANTM…then again I hate all reality tv that is not project runway lol

As thrilled as I am about all these new characters, I really hope that the new characters don’t overwhelm the series since shows that have a big cast often times end up having difficulty juggling all the plot lines (with the exception of Lost, I’ve heard). Season 3 had less characters than season 4 will have (I assume), and even then there were many characters who didn’t get enough screen time like Justin, Amanda and Claire. I don’t how they are going to handle all the new additions especially if the new characters will be hanging around for some time.

By the way Tom, I just visited the ABC website and it says that they are going to be showing special “enhanced” Ugly Betty episodes starting Friday (tomorrow) night. Description from the website:

“Get ready for the Season Four premiere of “Ugly Betty” with a special presentation of last five episodes enhanced with on-screen facts. The enhanced version of “Ugly Betty” will include text on the lower third of the screen and will let viewers in on clues in the show, as well as give backstory to catch new viewers up for Season Four.”

Wow, that sounds awesome! Pop ups are so much fun, especially if they are for a show that you love!

They also have 2 new videos on the Ugly Betty ABC website: 1) A new starter kit that recaps ALL of season 3 (mostly), and 2) a video that talks about all the “ingredients” necessary in Ugly Betty.
