Ausiello: Daniel Eric Gold Has been Promoted!

Ausiello has some casting news about Ugly Betty, and it’s big enough to give it top billing in this week’s Ask Ausiello column.
Question: Will Daniel Eric Gold, who plays Betty ex-BF/boss Matt, be returning to Ugly Betty next season? –Janeen
Ausiello: Not only is he returning, but sources confirm to me exclusively that he’s been promoted to a full-fledged series regular! But don’t take that to mean Matt and Betty will reunite and live happily ever after. In fact, I hear Betty producers are already cooking up a fresh obstacle for the pair, and rumor has it they want him to be lovable and blue collarish. (Think Seth Rogen only much cheaper.)
So, Daniel Eric Gold has been promoted to series regular. (Mr Gold, pick up your phone…it’s Christopher Gorham.). 
Actually, this isn’t too surprising; Silvio Horta had kind of hinted at it at the end of season 3, and with all the "I love you, I hate you" story lines that are possible between Matt and Betty, the writers have a really good foundation for story lines in season 4.
Now, this "obstacle" (ie, another possible Betty love interest, if I’m understanding Ausiello) – made me roll my eyes. He kind of sounds like Gio, although Gio was turned very quickly from working class sandwich guy to struggling entreprenuer.
We’ll watch the casting notices, but I like the idea of a Seth Rogen type (especially if they use pre-weight loss Rogen as the prototype). Now that Betty’s an editor, maybe this young man is going to be her assistant?
Come to think of it, that might be the role of the beautiful African American woman the show is casting. (Another idea is that she’s replacing Christina – SOMEBODY has to work in The Closet).
I love this time of year – the speculation is wide open!

I think it’s ridiculous that we will be subjected to a love triangle between Gio 2.0 and Henry 2.0. It didn’t even work well the first time they did it! I’m so glad it’s on Friday this season. Definitely won’t be tempted to watch it.

Definitely great news for Daniel Eric Gold. Awful news for most viewers of the show. Props to Horta for continuing the story most boring and unappealing love interest they ever created (after Jesse). Do you notice how Ausiello marks the word “cheaper”? Well that’s what we are getting ever since season 3: a low quality cheap show.
I’m with Wooster182. This is ridiculous! We got a Henry/Daniel 2.0 and now they are trying to silence the masses by creating a low quality cheap version of Gio. SHAME ON THEM!
Gio could still be classified as a Blue-collar industry enterpreneur because gio never worked in the professional field. He’s no white collar like Henry or upper class slacker like Matt. :p
And gosh! MY LORD! when you think this show cant get any worse… Horta just surprises us all over again!
YET ANOTHER love interest. More of the same boring Matt/Betty interaction. Keep hiring lower quality actors just because they are cheap. Keep spending in expensive clothes just because they are ridiculous and clownish.
And ANOTHER LOVE TRIANGLE but with mediocre character. Winner season, eh?
And a potential replacement for Christina? yeah, that would be lovely. Keep bringing 2.0s who’s next? Wilhelmina? Daniel?
This show is turning worse with every new spoiler we read. Can someone please hire the old writers and producers? Horta doesn’t seem to have a clue of what he’s doing. Please.
I am definitly not watching this show on TV. I took down cable. I may read the reviews you post in this blog and in MGSG. This show has turn to rubbish.
I think I’m liking all the possibilities for next season. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I really don’t know what to think of this news, especially the addition of the “obstacle” that is mentioned. I definitely agree with what everyone else is saying and I honestly don’t think that it is a good idea to create a new love triangle that is reminiscent of the love triangle in season 2. Didn’t Silvio say that the “love triangle” in season 2 was part of the problem with the show at that time and that the show (during season 2) was relying too heavily on the romantic entanglements? It’s confusing that they are trying to recreate something that was previously a problem. But then again, a lot of the plot lines for season 4 are still in the planning stages and Ausiello only gave a small amount of information. Maybe the “obstacle” is not a romantic interest for Betty, but a different kind of obstacle. I hope so, because, despite everything, I still think the show is smart enough to not repeat plot lines that have been used in the past.
I really hate how most shows (not just Ugly Betty) feel that introducing a romantic interest is the only way to keep characters “busy” and give them a decent plot line. There are so many other problems that people go through in life and I feel that season 1 of Ugly Betty showed that really well. Yes, romance is intriguing, but it is not the only way to attract the viewer’s attention.
I am not especially excited about the fact that Daniel Eric Gold will be a regular next season. I think that the actor himself is incredibly talented, but the character was really hard to get attached to in season 3. This was mostly because I felt that his character didn’t really play off of Betty’s child-like character very well and also because of the inconsistencies in his character. I saw some improvements in the season 3 finale and so I hope that their relationship becomes more believable in season 4.
I don’t know what to think about this news, especially another “obstacle” (the love interest kind) Haven’t we seen enough of this already like SEASON 2?? Couldn’t we just have dealt with Matt & Betty without more obstacles? I’m sure they had enough to go with as Betty dealing with her new position at Mode & having dealing with Matt as her new boss (& now ex-b/f) & will probably give her a hard time at work. But like UB fan said they are still in the planning stages for season 4 & the tidbit that Ausiello gave about a fresh obstacle for the pair, they want him to be loveable and blue collarish..did not really say love interest just an obstacle. But Horta did mention that Matt was going to around & their relationship was going to be changing & growing…so maybe these “obstacles” will strengthen their relationship on a personal level. Hopefully we will hear something as summer rolls along & the cast goes back to filming..
I think Daniel will be a nice addition to the already close knit cast, although I’m not sure how well he gets along with the cast. Doesn’t the situation seem similiar when Christopher Gorham joined the cast as a regular in the 2nd season after re-occuring in the 1st season..but seemed like he was well-liked by the cast as some of the cast acknowledged when did his appearance in the season finale.
Kelly I am pretty sure that “obstacle” is to strenghten Matt and Betty relationship. What I am surprised is that Horta thinks that building a Matt and Betty relationship is anything close to “entertaining, fun or romantic”.
And I am no Benry but comparing Daniel Eric Gold to Chris Gorham is just WRONG. Gorham is an amazing actor and he was well accepted in the cast and viewers everywhere loved this new fresh sweet and beautiful character “Henry Grubstick”. Gold may be a good actor… he just doesn’t show it at all in screen and his character Matt is just ANOTHER love interest, probably the least appealing and bland of all (besides Jesse)… impossible to compare to Henry or Gio Rossi, who were very well loved by the audiences.
The fact that Horta is even “thinking” about developing their relationship further is what is causing all this negative reaction. It’s like… if it’s good (Cliff, Christina, Gio, Henry, Alexis, DJ…) … kill it! If it’s bad and boring… BRING IT ON!!

*grooaaannn* I hate to say this, but I REALLY hope this show is over after this season. It’s just impossible for me to enjoy it any more, but I’d hate to leave it in the middle.
Why do we need another love triangle?Betty has had enough men in her life.Just let Matt and Betty work out their problems.I can’t believe they’re doing a repeat of seasons 1-3.Can’t they just let Betty be a normal girl.
Its good that Daniel Eric Gold has gotten some job security, but I won’t be watching unless they get back to decent non-Betty storylines, which is kind of sad. I’m fed up with the only real focus of this show being Betty’s completely unbelievable progression and multitude of boyfriends/love interests; I was annoyed last year when they introduced Matt, so I’m certainly not sticking around for Betty boyfriend No.6. Yes, you read that right, NUMBER FREAKING 6. In 3 years. Get real.

I’m so sick of Betty’s storylines. The only storylines I enjoy anymore are Wilhelmina, Marc, and Amanda’s. (And Claire)
Keep in mind, we’re speculating on my speculation of Ausiello’s speculation. I appreciate the level of passion here, but you might be upset over something that exists only in our imaginations.
I keep thinking that Ausiello had speculated that Matt would be Henry 2.0, and that was just flat-out wrong. Taking out all the speculation, here’s what we know for sure (without speculation):
1) Daneil Eric Gold is now a regular castmember.
2) A beautiful African American woman with strong acting skills is being brought on.
3) The producers are thinking about introducing a loveable blue-collarish type character.
Keep in mind, the writers and producers are coming off one of the best episodes in the history of the show (IMHO). Could they still screw things up by falling into old bad habits? You bet. But “The Fall Issue” makes me want to give them the benefit of the doubt.
If the show reverts into another silly love triangle, I’ll be right there with you, huffing and stamping my feet.
But for all we know, these developments could end up NOTHING like the speculation so far.
Well, there’s still the fact that “Matt has signed as a regular”. That is pretty much enough for me.
I think they will keep Matt & Betty apart for a while before they get back together.I’m sure they will let Matt & Betty stew over their break-up & the consequences of Matt working at Mode & being Betty’s new boss while she deals with her new position…and how far Matt will take his anger out on Betty. The writers seem to have something planned long-term for Matt & Betty if Daniel Eric Gold was promoted to a series regular. Maybe Tom could be right as far as over-speculating with new love interests. Hopefully they learned from what happened in season 2 & like Tom said “fall back into old habits”. I’ll be very disappointed if we have to go through “another” love triangle for the entire season…Matt & Betty should be able to deal with their problems without having other people getting involved..Maybe more spoilers/tidbits will be surfacing as the summer rolls along..
speculation or not, i have supported and have been a fan of ugly betty since it started. and even during those wretched periods of season 2- which for me is still my most disliked season of UB-, i have remained loyal and faithful throughout. rather it is not so much betty’s boyfriends that i am interested in but with the other characters and storylines. from a show’s POV, i think that having daniel eric gold as a regular will be a positive thing for the show- i really do. and so i don’t think his arrival will be an issue for me.
tom, i hope the writers do not go revert to the boring and less humourous, one-sided writing of season 2, where all they did was hype up that love triangle and concerntrated on just that and nothing else- which annoyed me a lot- i know i keep bringing up season 2 and saying how much i loathed it, but i did and yet season 3 had me falling in love with UB again.
Why exactly would the addition of Daniel Eric Gold in the show would be a positive thing for increasing the ratings? I’d like someone to elaborate on that, if possible.

I had a feeling that he was going to become a regular next season…especially how they ended the season (3) finale & have a good set up storyline wise between Matt & Betty for season (4). How they will deal with each other on a daily basis / how will a bitter & hostile Matt treat Betty at her new editor’s position & will probably make her work life difficult. It will remains to been seen how Betty will react & deal with this new situation. Maybe we’ll be hearing tidbits here & there soon, I read that the cast will be back to work within the next few weeks….BTW, I haven’t heard or seen too much of Eric Mabius during their break…must be enjoying his time off with his family!!

well, I kinda like Matt/Daniel Eric Gold. Am I the only one here who’s enjoying season 3? And the story’s kinda getting interesting since I’ve seen the spoiler vid, how Matt’s gonna change and get bitter. I’ll want to see how Betty will deal with that. It’s kinda interesting.
season 2 sucked so much but I stick with it. Season 3’s the best so far.
and p.s: daniel eric gold’s acting does not suck. Has anyone seen him in the last two episodes looking so brokenhearted? it’s so believable and sad.
