Ugly Betty Season 3 Finale Live Blog!

May 21, 2009 by Tom

Well, the day is here – welcome to the last Ugly Betty live blog for season 3. This is the last episode (for now) to air on Thursday nights. Tonight, there are two, count em, two episodes airing back to back:

In the first hour, entitled “Curveball” (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), just as Betty agrees to move in with Matt, Henry (guest star Christopher Gorham) pays a visit to NYC, forcing Betty to admit she still has feelings for her former fiance. Meanwhile, Betty and Marc wait to see if their YETI editor interviews resulted in actual jobs; Daniel’s transformation from playboy to devoted husband makes him a media darling; and Wilhelmina cozies up to Victoria Hartley to find out just what kind of connection Claire Meade has to Cal Hartley.

In “The Fall Issue” (9:00-10:00 p.m.), the sudden death of a Mode editor leaves Betty and Marc competing for the same job. Meanwhile, Wilhelmina demands that Claire tender her resignation at a big awards ceremony . . . or she’ll reveal Claire’s dark secret to Cal Hartley; Matt lets his jealousy over Henry get the best of him; and Justin nervously waits to see if he got into performing arts school.

Let’s have an Ugly Betty blowout tonight! Join us at 8/7c!

Dang. After that show… I feel like I need a hug. Or a cocktail, I don’t which. If every single episode this season was that good.. I don’t even know if I could handle it .

  2. Timmeh! says:

Season 3’s Finale was hands down, the best ever. OMG, let me some up the main parts: Matt and Betty break up, Matt is Betty’s new boss, Justin didn’t get into the arts school, Molly dies, Betty becomes editor, Marc doesn’t, someone fell out of the MODE building, it turns out Claire has another son, Wilhelmina hires a hitman for Connor, and then someone (Unknown) shows up in her apartment and she drops her champagne shattering the glass. So now for the speculation, who could it be: Connor, Alexis, Fey Sommers, Renee, Claire, Christina, Bradford’s [DEAD] body??? Wow, best season finale ever!

  3. mjade2 says:

I’m with Zoe – I need a drink after being put through that ringer.

AMAZING, but my heart feels kind of broken, too.

  4. SirLizard says:

Timmeh… A hit man? I thought that the guy was a private investigator whom Willi was hiring to track Connor down so she could get him to help her. I don’t see how hiring a hit man to kill the man she loves would help her at all.

As for the ending… I think that it sets up many possibilities for next season. Matt could very well be Claire and Cal’s son. I wouldn’t put it past Victoria to trick her husband into adopting his own son. She could have told him that since she couldn’t have her own children she wanted to give him the child that he “almost had” with Claire, before she “terminated” the pregnancy. She could say that she found a baby and made all the arrangements, without telling him that it was his own son that he was adopting. I’m just throwing that out there.

Now, since Eric Mabius and America Ferrera are against a Daniel-Betty pairing, setting Matt up as Betty’s new boss opens up the possibility that the writers can weave in some of the story lines from “Yo soy Betty, la fea” without tainting the Betty-Daniel friendship that has been established over the past three seasons. But only time will tell.

I’ll be counting the days until Season Four begins!

  5. Beatrice B says:

This final episode was really good. There were many surprises. Though, it was watered down with Matt/Betty pair who are not nearly as emotional as they should be. Gold showed some little emotion a couple of times but his character lacks a certain something… The main thing is that I really dislike how America is playing Betty this season. She’s too cold and almost as if amateurish acting, a bit childish and selfcentered and she’s going overboard with the voice and the faces… they are annoying. Before they were charming and cute… now she’s a Mode Girl.
You know, I got really mad that Betty got the job over Marc (we knew that though). If it were season 1 or season 2 Betty I would have jumped on my chair. But how many times does Betty has to crush over Marc?! How many times does Horta need to prove that Betty is indeed the leading lady and no matter how selfinvolved or appalling she is she will always win… no matter what. She is not a nice person.

Henry screen time was a bit wasted. I am surprised to be happy to see Gorham again (must be Harper’s island effect). Even the music changed when he was around and Betty was the “sweet girl” she is with Henry. I wish Gio would showed up, because among the three, I like when Betty is with Gio most. Now with Matt she is just … you know what I mean.

Now besides Betty. I did like the rest. Eric Mabius acting was really good (but please give him a break already!). I’m with the rest of the posters… My heart is still crushed. The episode was very emotional.

Well, at the beginning, there was a bit resemblance on Jump at the beginning of the episode. But I liked the twists. They were good and some few unexpected: Betty betrayed by her hero, Would it be Connor or Alexis, Wilhelmina getting fired, Matt breaking up with Betty (surprise! that was a good one). Though we did know he was going to be the new boss (come on Daniel Eric Gold is affordable for ABC… shame on them! I bet they’re going to make him a regular next season). Yeah I’m bitter.

Okay, besides that. I really liked the episode. If only this season would have been half as good as this episode the show wouldn’t have such poor ratings (or would have to move to fridays).

  6. Michelle says:

Wow- First episode was great! It reminded me a lot of S.1, I really enjoyed it. The baseball game was really funny, and I loved when Marc and Amanda started groping Henrys muscles LOL! 2nd was not so fun, kinda dull and of course very sad at the end :( Matt is such a jerk! I really don’t like him, he’s very annoying. Poor Daniel. I never really liked Molly, but that last scene was so depressing.

I really hope Henry is back next season. I missed him! His scenes with Betty were so cute, America and Chris have such great chemistry.

  7. BD says:

    I agree Michelle!
I think that teh finale had S.3 parallels and I am also hoping that CG might return for an episode or two. I am still hopeful for End Game.
I have mixed feelings about the finale. I just hope it works out better, but bening in the Friday night slot… :-/
    idk..I give the finale a solid B.
    NERD KISS!!!! ;)

  8. UB says:

I hope Henry comes back :]

  9. geek says:

wow… i don’t know what to say. poor daniel. as to betty’s promotion, com’on, decided by a coin toss, it’s not like she’s stabbing marc in the back for it. although i didn’t like the ‘i’ve been thinking about this job the second she died?” wtf, that came out of betty???? matt just seems like such a flake, he has no passion for publishing anymore, and decide to break off with betty, so why take a job, just to stare at pain in your face all day, just to make her life hell?

hey writers, i got an idea. HENRY is claire’s love child, how’s that? :)

  10. sugally30 says:

I did not watch these episodes, yet. So far, I don´t like the story line anymore. Is Matt becoming evil and mean, because his heart is broken? Is Daniel becoming a victim of fate in every episode? I Betty becoming stupid?

Come on writers… I really liked Matt and Betty as a couple… it was kind of like a romantic storyline where rich boy meets ugly girl… falls for her inner beauty… and then she should reflect that in her look to everyone else!

Now they are killing the show!!!

  11. trishpip says:

sugally – having Matt come in as Betty’s boss at Mode leaves the door open for them to either reignite the flame or to extinguish it completely.. don’t give up yet.

Beatrice – I don’t like how Betty is with Matt either. If they wanted to bring the heart back to this show, they missed the boat on that one.

I liked how they handled the goodbye kiss for Betty and Henry, as both of them heated it up beyond a fond farewell – they could be endgame.

But the show ended with one for the Detty’s – Betty is always there for Daniel when he needs her, comfort, etc. Personally I think they have a nice friendship but I know the B&B group sees it as having possibilities of being something more.

My favorite bit of the night was Marc and Justin. I love it when they get to do a scene together because Marc is like the voice of experience that will help Justin survive his teens. They are hell years for kids who dare to be different, and some (boys especially) don’t make it.

Good show… but now what happens to Marc??

  12. trishpip says:

Oooh, a thought! Maybe Marc is the love-child of Claire and Cal and Willi figures it out and doesn’t tell him but keeps him on hand to use him for her own nefarious purposes… and because she really does love him deep down inside.

(Ha, that would be too much like Amanda’s story, wouldn’t it…)

  13. Jessica King says:

Ugly Betty Season Finale was good/funny/sad.
Poor Mac not becomes editor,Congraduation Betty did.I kinda like Henry and Betty better than Matt and Betty.I wish Henry should stay for little longer on Ugly Betty.Matt told Betty that it over, but I was shock that he told her that he is her new boss at Mode.I still want know who Claire adopt son by Cal.Poor Daniel,he make me cried when he upset that Molly dies.I still think who Wilhelmina saw during drop her champagne shattering the glass and say what are you doing here? Maybe be Connor OR I not sure about Renee,I will find out and cant wait for 4 season this fall.

  14. JJ says:

I loved this finale. I have felt that season 3 was not as good as season 2 or season 1, but this finale is a signal that the show is heading in a better direction. I like that betty is ALWAYS there for daniel, but I don’t like betty and matt together. I don’t like matt at all. He is just the typical rich kid who has all the time in the world to do frivolous things. Amanda wasn’t used as much as I would have liked, but marc loosing the job was sad. I do think that a higher position will open up for marc because of what he tol Justin in the bathroom “you have to find your niche, and if you can’t find one…make one”. I also loved that scene with Justin and Marc. I am glad Justin didn’t get into LaGuardia Arts High School because now his character will have more drama at his high school in Queens because he is gay. I known he hasn’t come out yet, but come on everyone knows that he is. I do hope that he will start to have some gay love interests. That would spice things up. SO SAD that molly died. I actually didn’t think it would be that quick. I hope Willy can get back into mode because without her the magazine will be run too much by the Hartley family. Can’t wait for next season.

  15. kelcy says:

This finale episode was pretty good. It had a little of everything (saddness, funny, evil, etc) & at least the all the regular cast were featured.I thought it was good that Henry got a proper send-off & whatever issues Henry & Betty had were solved, but Betty was being an idiot again by not talking to Matt about her kissing Henry (and she listened to Hilda’s advice on top of that) Betty should have gone with her first instinct & told Matt. I’m sure the outcome would have been that bad, but the fact she lied & he gave her the chance to come clean hurt him the most after how often he told her how he felt about her. The part that really got to me was when Matt told Betty that she was his first love and you could tell he was hurt & I think it threw Betty off track. Now that we know Matt’s going to be Betty’s boss, I think he probably took the job to get back at her & will try to make her life miserable & only told her this after he heard her answer about if she still loved Henry. My feeling is that I don’t think Matt can be as ruthless as his father – it may be a rough going for a while, but even tho Matt got his heart hurt, deep down I think he will still care for Betty & being she is his “first love”. From what Horta said in interviews Matt’s going to be around & their relationship will be changing & growing. Then again my theories could go out the window. I also liked the part when Betty got a text from Daniel that he needed her & she went there to be with him..It was sooo sad & you know she will always be there for him.
BTW, what do you think?? Will Betty & Matt eventually reconcile?

  16. geek says:

    another train of random thoughts:
    – suzuki really adds to the show. I love tabloid reporting style
    – henry/betty chemistry is hard to beat; (gio/betty is good too); matt.. not so much
    – betty’s wardrobe in the finale are not too extreme, still wacky. Common, no one ever told her to wear a business suit to an interview???
    – i think i had a dream where betty pulled off her braces, IT IS ABOUT TIME. End of next season just will not be reasonable. She needs a makeover beginning of next season.
    – i think the claire/cal affair had to be after any of the kids were born? supposedly happened early 80’s. how old is suppose to be daniel/matt/henry? :D

  17. celai says:

I just want to know who sang the song last night “Time After Time”?????

  18. Tom says:

celai, I recognized the voice but couldn’t quite place it.

  19. UB says:

    It’s Cyndi Lauper :)

  20. UB says:

sounds like sarah mclachlin in there too

  21. Stiletto says:

I’m glad Betty and Matt split up – some of you will hate me for this, but Matt’s a loser. He’s unfocused, self-centered, and I’m detecting some laziness in there too. (Trust me on this, I’m used to being around rich people. Real-life Matts whine a lot and don’t accomplish much.)

Having Matt as Betty’s new boss is such a cop-out. Is it really necessary to torture Betty like that – and is Matt even qualified to be Betty’s boss in the first place? She’s certainly smarter than he is…

The Marc-Justin moments took The Fall Issue from good to great. I’ll always be up for seeing more of them.

I have a theory on why Claire burned the adoption certificate – she knows how resourceful and manipulative Wilhelmina is, and probably wouldn’t put it past her to steal the certificate, track down the child, and somehow use him against her. (Which, let’s face it, is precisely the sort of thing Willy would do.) Poor Claire.

  22. celia says:

Was it the same song from the night before on American Idol?

  23. UB says:

    Sure was :]

  24. SirLizard says:

Yes, it was Cyndi Lauper and Sarah McLachlan.

  25. SirLizard says:

I guess some of you are too young to remember that “Time After Time” was a HUGE hit for Cyndi Lauper waaaaaaaay back in 1984 (the year that I graduated from high school, and apparently years before some of y’alls were even a glimmer in your parents’ eyes).

  26. Beatrice B says:

    @kelcy
“BTW, what do you think?? Will Betty & Matt eventually reconcile?”

That’s the worse part of all. I think Daniel Eric Gold will be made a regular next season and Horta wants Matt and Betty to be THE couple for next season. Trying to replicate the Henry/Betty on and off romance and the Gio/Betty loving banter. Which only leads to this: Horta does whatever he wants with his show in spite of hiring actors that don’t click with the public… just because he can. I hope he doesn’t bring back Matt and Betty romance. But my fear is that it’s inevitable. I think the motto is: if people don’t like it, do it; if they are interested in something, kill it.

Horta sometimes makes me really angry.
    I want Gio back!

  27. SirLizard says:

I don’t think that it’s accurate to say that Betty and Matt “don’t click with the public.” I’m a member of the public and I like the somewhat complicated relationship of Betty and Matt. Also, after the stumbling block that was placed in the way of their relationship during the last two episodes, it does not look at all (to me, anyway) that Horta is trying to make them THE couple for next season. It looks to me as if there is going to be a lot of tension and problems between them, and not much coupling. Then again, they could change their minds a few episodes into the fourth season, the way they did with Betty’s single-girl-in-the-city thing at the beginning of the third season. I guess we’ll see. But people have to remember that that there were many more factors in Gio and Henry’s departures than just some whim on Horta’s part, or some twisted desire of his to do exactly the opposite of that people want. I really liked having both Henry and Gio on the show, but I’m sure I’m not alone in liking Matt too (although some of the posts around here make me feel that I could be…).

  28. sugally30 says:

@ SirLizard: You are not alone… I like Matt, too.

  29. snuggles says:

@ SirLizard: I agree with you …I like Matt too. Like you said their relationship is complicated & Betty & Matt have had their share of disagreements in the last few episodes. By having Matt as her new boss & the fact they are not together anymore will definitely cause a lot more tension & some stress on Betty’s part being that she wanted to move up in the industry will have to deal with Matt’s new role as her boss. I’m wondering why he took a job at Mode in the first place (besides the fact that his father is financing the company) since he told Betty he “lost his passion” for publishing…did he take the job to be spiteful? From what Horta says they will have obstacles & misunderstandings before the finale which will set up juicy storylines for season 4..I’m guessing the last couple episodes were the misunderstandings & maybe the obstacles are the break-up & the news that Matt will be Betty’s new boss. But I’m not sure what Horta meant that their relationship will be changing & growing..on the changing part I figure it’s becuz they are not a couple anymore & the will be boss/ employee.. as far as the growing part I’m not sure what he meant..will they realize they still care for each other & give it another try.. I’m hopeful that they would try again at least Betty needs some happiness in her relationships without too much angst for once (maybe by some circumstance) & if Matt really loves her enough he will eventually forgive her despite having his heart broken…But we’ll see..

  30. Jessica Raeder says:

I totally like Matt! I think Daniel Eric Gold clicked with the audience just fine….. I think sometimes people like certain Ships( I love you, B!!!) and that is why they don’t see Metty or Detty happening or have any passion for one another….I find it interesting that Matt is going to be Betty’s new boss!!! I hope we haven’t seen the last of Metty….. I really feel there is some definite unresolved issues there…..

  31. Beatrice B says:

I love you too, Jessica. Don’t worry about liking Matt. It’s a matter of personal preference. I like your fics about Metty, though. Because I like your writing.

But I’ll have to disagree in the part that he clicked with the audience because I’ve been pretty much everywhere… and remember. before I was a Getty. I was a devoted Ugly Betty fan. So I still read pretty much every article written about the show that goes online. But it’s okay. I have to admit, he has some followers. That is expected. He’s the only love interest left.

Personally, while I dislike Matt as a character (being too flat and bland for my personal taste). I notice people’s comment and they are more interested in the posibility of Betty finding true happines through Matt than being actually interested in Matt Hartley as a character in his own. I guess he’s fine now because there’s no one to compare him to now. In fact I have yet to hear a good quality about Matt besides “he’s into her” and he’s sweet and cute (and has the moola). Not enough for me, I guess.

I do like the fact that Matt will be Betty’s new boss. Because it goes well with the “Hartley family plot”. But I want Daniel Eric Gold to surprise me next season. Will he show some real emotion as he bosses Betty around or he will deliver the same performance he’s been showing in the former episodes? Mrs. Hartley, Wilhelmina, Connor, Marc and Amanda did well as evil characters because they had personality and strong screen presence. You could “feel them” hate Betty. I wonder how would Matt impose upon her. It might be fun to watch though.

Or maybe they should hire another actor. (and believe me I’ve never said this before until Lindsay Lohan came earlier this season).

  32. SirLizard says:

I can’t believe you didn’t find Daniel Eric Gold’s performance in “The Fall Issue” moving. You could just see the pain in his eyes when he looked at Betty. When he told her that she was his first love, it was the most affecting moment of the episode for me… well, until Daniel called Betty at the end to have her come to his side after Molly’s death. I watched the episode again and both scenes just killed me a little inside.

  33. addy says:

i could not believe this episode! best finale so far! i am still wondering why wilhemina was carrying coins with her…. They just set up the fourth season so that it has a lot of stories to follow up on. It will be a long, hard wait.

  34. fanielle says:

I LOVED the finale – both parts! I kinda thought Betty became annoying this season but the part with Henry I could actually understand… It broke my heart that they still loved each other but the situation doesn’t work out. Betty should have just come clean to Matt. I hope Matt forgives her in the end… ALTHOUGH I still think Betty and Gio are the perfect pair. But! Of course that doesn’t make the great story of girl from Queens meets trustfund boy from the upper east side…. ANYWAY, if it can’t be Gio, I hope it’s Matt. I hope Matt eventually leaves Mode and Marc gets a job and work with Betty as Co-Editor in Chief…..

I hope Danielle gets another love of his life, too:(

  35. LW says:

I guess some of you are too young to remember that “Time After Time” was a HUGE hit for Cyndi Lauper waaaaaaaay back in 1984 (the year that I graduated from high school, and apparently years before some of y’alls were even a glimmer in your parents’ eyes).

  36. SirLizard says:

    LW,

Hmmm, that’s an interesting post. It looks kind of familiar, though. I think that I wrote the same exact post, word for word. We must have a lot in common ;-)

  37. ATUS23 says:

when is betty coming back ??

  38. Kate says:

I just watched the finale and I loved it! I shall be hooked for season 4. I love Henry and it was lovely to see him and Betty together again, although I felt for Matt…Why did Betty just admit it!!!!! She complained in season 2 she was turning into a mode girl, that act proved it.

Secondly I like Matt and Betty together (obviously not as much as Betty and dream God Henry) it was so moving when he said she was his first love, although I do feel at times before this scene he did lack emotion he made up for it in the finale. I think next season he will be a regular. Personal I feel he will become arrogant and nasty to Betty and I believe he will taunt her with lots of hot models who he sleeps with, I think this will because of his connection problem (we saw with his therapist) will appear due to his broken heart. However I hope by at the latest half way through he manages to forgive Betty and they get back together.

I think Matt is Clair’s son, I think she gave her baby boy for adoption and Matt’s mother (and maybe his father is in on it too) adopted him. I think someone will realise this and it will be brought into the open, meaning that Daniel and Matt may attempt to bond with Betty’s help.

Regarding the scene with Willi dropping the glass I like to think it is Fey although I think it may be Clair telling her to back off…or maybe Alexis will be brought back in relating to the whole Mead family having another brother.

I think Matt’s dad will be a main character in the next season and i think Daniel and Willi will find it difficult to remove him…as warned by Matt. And i think that to control his power he will get Clair to stand by him as he has with her and maybe there may be a relationship between them two.

In relation to Marc, I think he has become a lot nicer this season and I hope it carried on…although I don’t want him to turn out like Betty and be too sweet. I also hear that Christina will be coming back, I think maybe her husband dies and she has to bring the baby up alone and I think Betty will be there for her. And that ginger haired woman from Y.E.T.I I think may make a return as Betty continues to land her dream job.

By the way, apparently betty does loose her braces this season…maybe that’s the point when she gets back with Matt, they see over the photocopier, eyes meet, she gives him a wide smile and BAM he can’t take his eyes off her ect ect lol.

That’s just my opinion but whatever happens I have a feeling it will be good:)

  39. Kate says:

Oh and i think with daniel away to morn and maybe Willi away because of the person in her house i think Matt will be in total control of the magazine at the start of the season. And i think Amander may try and become his assistant…just another idea lol.
