Ugly Betty Episode 3.21 Live Blog
May 7, 2009 by Tom
Welcome to our weekly gathering of Ugly Betty fans, as we watch and react to a new episode of the show. This week’s episode is 3.21 – The Born Identity.
Just as it looks like billionaire Calvin Hartley (guest star David Rasche) is going to give Mode the bailout it needs so the magazine won’t go under, baby William is kidnapped – and Betty is dragged into the ensuing drama. Meanwhile Archie (guest star Ralph Macchio) asks Hilda to be part of his latest political campaign.
If this one isn’t the end of Ashley Jensen’s regular run on Ugly Betty, it’s going to be the beginning of the end.
Join us at 8/7c for all the fun!

I have a feeling this is going to be a really good episode! =D Can’t wait!
Christina :”"”"”"”(((((((((((
WE’LL MISS YOUUUUU!!!!!
Did anyone else get teary when Christina left??
Loved the promo for next week, by the way
Oh it was a fantastic episode!!!!! I got anxious for a lead-in to next episode like previous seasons.
***The following is a rant and should not reflect on this blog in any way that may be deemed disrespectful. I’m the one saying it. Not the other posters unless they too have their own similar opinion.***
They’ve lost that hook to next episode since after Claire was found innocent in Fey’s death and Betty ruined Gio’s deli. See what happens when good programs take network hiatus? They’re butchered for desperate network honchos to make a fearful bid of winning back “white” demographic audiences. Why do I say that? Because “white” programs don’t complain about WGA being stiffed. Current ABC brass fails to remember that throughout the 1990’s most of their programming was primarily integrated, immigrant-related and urban. Full House, Boy Meets World, NYPD Blue. Want more? Step By Step, Perfect Strangers, Family Matters.
Do I need to go on? Who’s The Boss?, Head Of The Class, China Beach. Am I being clear here?
This is crap what’s happening. Everytime I see the Geico Caveman on Inside Edition something happens to my Ugly Betty viewing. Last time I saw him there, UB was still on hiatus when I thought it’d be on and instead was In The Motherhood *again!* Before that? The last episode featuring La-Lohan was on and I had to turn off my cable box and plug in cable from the wall directly to my TV using just a coaxial cable. I call fix! That or jinx! Screw that guy and whatever is causing my digital cable to mess up. This sounds like Bush and Cheney adult baby bureaucratic bull.
This was a good eppy..At least Christina went out on a happy note, but sad at the same time because she was losing her best friend. Christina
looked out for her when she first started Mode when no one would give her time of day..
So, how do Cal & Claire know each other? I guess
we’ll find out soon.. Cal is one son of a b—-.. I guess we are beginning to see the ruthless side of Matt’s father something that Matt had warned Betty about. Matt will probably be dragged in by his father (not by choice) since he has a foot in the door with financing. I think he will also do it to protect Betty.
Yeah, the thing to remember about Matt is though he approached Betty at YETI (that just sounds cute, eh?) and became her friend first. He’s a good pal to Betty but nobody can replace Christina or Gio.
I don’t find him suitable because what if it doesn’t work out? That’s my problem. Not that he’s her everything, not his charms but really he’ll be the boss’s son and she’ll be the company owner’s secretary. That is a major conflict of interest that could cause either a corporate coup or bigger internal civil war within Mode that could bankrupt both the Meade family and Cal by whomever he loses business with as a result of investing in Mode magazine. We saw what happened with Alexis and Daniel after Bradford’s death. There needs to be resolution of Bradford’s will written into one of the episodes and a finality to whom he chose as CFO of Meade publications. *THAT* is how you’ll get out of the “spinning your wheels with similar storylines” rut. The show should revolve around the previously intro and summary lead-in to next episode. Whomever said to drop those was only looking at their own gains and not that of the whole show. Cosmetics aside, it tells the whole story with heart. Something most of the fashion and mainly corporate world was lacking *until* this program. Ugly Betty is the 21st century Wonder Woman for minority female equality and civil rights. Ignorance is *so* 20th century. Or didn’t anyone learn a thing by Farnsworth’s idiot box invention and I Love Lucy? No Salt Of The Earth about it. This kind of cutting progress off at the knees is a contemporary statement on Blackboard Jungle controversy.
Another week, another great Ugly Betty episode…so glad it’s back. I knew it couldn’t be Willie’s baby, and I’m glad they at least got that part right instead of trying to get for a really shocking twist. However, I really wish they would’ve found a way to keep Christina on the show…I thought she was a great character. I’m interested in seeing how they fill that void – I think Betty needs some sort of similar confidant…we’ll see.
The scene at the end was so beautiful, I’m really glad they used the song “Layers” by Asobi Seksu – this is the second week in a row where I thought they used a perfect song at the end to convey the emotion of the scene. The singer has such incredible, dreamy vocals that the scene definitely loosened up my tear ducts a bit. A video clip of the scene/song is at http://modestcomplexity.blogspot.com/2009/05/ugly-betty.html
