Happy Birthday, America Ferrera!

April 18, 2009 by Tom

90328A1 Today, Ugly Betty star America Ferrera turns 25!  Ahh, to be young and famous in New York!

She shares April 18th as a birthday with James Woods, Conan O’Brien, Melissa Joan Hart, and even Kourtney Kardashian.

I hope she takes it easy with partner Ryan Piers Williams, or parties it up with Becki Newton, or does whatever she wants today.  And hopefully, she’ll get back to filming the final episodes of Ugly Betty season 3 very soon.  I miss the NY set photos!

As many of you have noted in the comments here, this has been a very confusing year for Ferrera’s character Betty.  Her direction has been so scattered, almost schizophrenic, it has to be the result of a disagreement amongst the writers/producers. I can tell you this, if the show wants to survive season 4, the writers HAVE to come up with a direction and stick to it.

But, enough of my Ugly betty whining.  Today is Ferrera’s day, and I hope she enjoys it fully.

I agree with you, the writers should really decide wich way they wanna go, i don’t want a conflinct between them and the producers to kill my favorite show, sometimes you have to forget about what you want and think about the greater good.

I agree. The premise of the original Columbian series was of an unattractive but very intelligent young woman who turns around the fortunes of an ailing company and wins the love and respect of her boss. What we’ve lost with Ugly Betty is any sense of Betty being anything other than a kind hearted if somewhat naieve young woman. We don’t get any sense of her intellect, or if we do, it’s shrouded out by general ditziness and sentimentality. She hasn’t exactly rocketed herself into the heart of the company – she’s still pottering around the edges, having unlikely dalliances with a string of handsome admirers, whilst putting in the occasional bit of effort for this “Yeti” program and repetitively rescuing either her family or Daniel’s family from an ever recuring list of familial disasters.

I for one, really wanted to see an English version of Yo Soy Betty La Fea. It seems that this is never going to happen, so I’m just going to have to learn Spanish and Dutch, so that I can watch YSBLF, Yo Soy Bea and Sara – all of which are the very best versions (at least in my opinion)!.

As for the writers at Ugly Betty – do any of you have any idea what the show is actually about? And for those fans out there who talk about it running for 7 or 8 seasons – I just don’t see how that can be realistic. I already feel that the show has no real purpose and no real direction. I don’t get any sense of Betty’s progression and it really feels like it has nowhere to go. Its just milling around, kicking its feet in the dust.

as much as i am enjoying season 3, i do agree somewhat that betty is regressing, as opposed to progressing as a character this season. instead of moving forwards, the writers have turned betty into a confused and even more naive person than she was back in the first season.

part of this had to do with the decision to move betty back home and moving out of the apartment she had briefly lived in the city. she was enjoying herself and forged a close friendship with amanda. i am still furious somewhat over this, particuarly the circumstances which led to betty making this decision; i swear if betty doesn’t move out of queens for good next season or in season 5, i’d be annoyed.

i realise that her family as much as they have been supportive towards betty, they need to realise they have to let her grow and develop on her own.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! :)

Also, I agree with what everyone else has been saying… we really aren’t seeing Betty move forward very much this season. While some characters (like Daniel) are starting to mature and develop, it seems like Betty’s kind of “stuck”… hopefully they can come to a clear decision about where her character is headed and then go with it!

I want to see this show on the air for many more seasons, but the only way that can happen is if they get Betty moving forward again.
