Vanessa Williams on ‘Hannah Montana’ Movie

April 11, 2009 by Tom

90403U1_WILLIAMS_B_GR_04 Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams didn’t have to think much before signing up to play Vita in the just-opened Hannah Montana, The Movie.

She says, “I have an eight year old daughter who is prime Hannah Montana fan. And the year before we had gone to her concert, the 3-D movie of her concert, we had seen her at the high school musical premiere, and we have it playing 24/7 in our house. So I definitely knew about the Hannah Montana mania.”

With this as a background, when she was contacted about appearing in the film, Williams jumped at the chance.

“My management called and said, ‘Listen, I know you only have two months off of from your shooting for Ugly Betty, but there’s a small role in the Hannah Montana film, what do you think?’ And I said, ‘You know what I don’t even need to read it. Yes I’ll do it, I’m in.”

Reviewers have said that Williams, as Vita, basically plays “another Wilhelmina”, although that’s kind of funny, because on Ugly Betty lately she’s been playing an entirely different character than the one we saw in season 1.  There is a lot of disagreement in Ugly Betty fan-dom about whether or not the softer Wilhelmina  is a good thing.  I’ve personally liked this break from evil for her, although a part of me misses the old evil schemes.

Anyway, if any of you have seen the movie yet, what did you think of Williams?  What about the movie overall?

Vanessa was wonderful in the movie. Her character Vita was definitely similar to Wilhelmina, but I think that’s why they wanted Vanessa to play the part. They knew she could play a pushy diva role well, and Vanessa gave them exactly what they wanted.

The overall movie was great. I’m not a fan of Hannah Montana, (I only saw it to see Vanessa) but I really enjoyed the movie. It was fun, musical and heart warming. It was a feel good film and Vanessa was a fantatic addition to the cast!
