Poll: What Did You Think Of Ugly Betty Episode 3.18?
March 13, 2009 by Tom
I’m curious what you thought of last night’s episode of Ugly Betty – 3.18, A mother of a Problem. It’s kind of hard to put a finger on it; I thought that all of the elements of a great episode were there, but when it was over, I just felt that it was a good episode.
The writing and acting were good (the dialog, especially Marc’s, was outstanding). The story lines all moved forward (except Amanda and Christina), and Betty had to work her way out of an embarassing situation, which is always fun to watch.
When Matt stood up to his mother, his character won over a lot of fans in the live blog. I really like Claire as the socialite sage (the East Side Cows barb still has me laughing). And Archie and Hilda are great together (especially after they agreed how awkward a situation they were in because of the Suarezes matchmaking). And Wilhelmina’s story line had Vanessa Williams vamping at her funniest.
All of this being said, I should have loved the episode, but I can only say I liked it. Maybe it was the lack of Amanda – especially with Marc. Maybe it was the fact that the final confrontation with Matt’s mom seemed so lukewarm. Maybe it’s because the writers seemed to be treading water in the Daniel/Molly relationship.
I don’t know. I still think the episode was better than average, but doesn’t quite fall into the ‘great’ category.
What do you think? I’ve created a poll just to find out!

Loved Willi and Marc… great. Matt was strong and gained points… Baranski was good yet predictable. Archie and Hilda had sweetness and some heat… love that dynamic between them (Ana/Ralph)… can’t wait til next week for them to take to next level. Claire was really great with Betty. Not the best ep… but really enjoyed some of the set-ups in these relationships!
Hey! I didn’t say to kill Amanda and Marc’s screentime! They’re part of what makes the show wonderful. However, I just don’t like the all-or-nothing absolute feeling of the season. As the Star Wars prequels say: Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
Claire was utterly fantastic. She’d play real well to take over Bradford’s top office. A place we haven’t seen all this season or most of the last. I wish Alexis would at least make a call from France that we see someone at Mode talking to her from there. That’s what they used to do for Coach on Cheers for some episodes. Vera in practically all that she was mentioned. I don’t mean to mix in any other series but in this context being referential works for merely my stated opinion. That all the top level cast work together as Editor is one thing but what about that executive penthouse? Will we see any more play for that position? Its almost as though someone would want it written out of the series.
Clearly, Christine Baranski’s character would only find Matt and Betty suitable if she had to deal with Mrs. Meade and had her arm twisted to be reminded where the socialite power still resides.
I’d love to see a renegade soiree someday. Bring back Yoga and Alexis from France to talk about what it’d be like if the South were in at Mode too. Fashion Week last year was alright with Bow Wow and Omarion but that just don’t cut it compared to if Coolio or Easy-E types from Cincinatti (Bizzy Bone?) could bring out what the midwest was about. Ever think about bringing on Outkast? That with Claire and if Betty brought in Gio with Santana and Chad Kroeger? That would be unbelievably Golden Globes-worthy right there! Who could *touch* the show then? It’d be primetime ABC unseen since mid 80’s Tuesdays, Wednesdays and TGI Fridays!!! If that were on NBC, it’d be enough to get Will and Carlton from Fresh Prince to do the Apache Dance together.
Overall, I liked the episode. I think the last couple of episodes were better.Loved the the bantering between Willi & Marc…that was hillarious. Although the situation with Betty & Matt’s mother was predictable, I’m glad Betty was able to stand up to her in the end.. Matt gained some brownie points by standing up for Betty & I think he genuinely is smitten with her
Although he tends to not to tell her the truth @times..Can’t wait to see next week’s episode..
Marc & Amanda making Betty over..that should be a hoot!!! and what is Matt hiding???
I’ve been waiting for Macchio to return since 3.08… so I was thrilled to see him and can’t wait for more Hilda and Archie!!
His movies shaped my childhood and continue to inspire. And his acting and chemistry with Ana, rocks! It’s been long overdue for Ralph and now he’s on my fav show… YEAH!!
I really liked this esisode!
Sure it wasn’t the best, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Wilhelmina’s storyline. It was hilarious and beautiful at the same time! Vanessa Williams is brilliant!
Great acting and writing…… It could have been a great episode; but it was directed hideously. The scenes were almost cut without an appropriate end and the music was lame and just didn’t fit on the scenes….. After a couple of great episodes it was a little disappointing…. specially because the acting and story was great.
an so-so episode, the show has lots of good moments, I was wondering (like Tom) why I didn’t love it. My conclusion is: dainel/molly story is dragging down the show. Those are the only themes I didn’t like. the topic is just too heavy.
Well first of all, I have LOVED season 3 and I think it is the best yet, however there are a few things that I am dissapointed in.
*I think Wilhelmina needs to turn evil again. HEr evilness is seriously the thing that attracted me into Ugly Betty in the first place. I loved her evil schemeing and espicially loved that CD she used to wipe Mode in “Giving Up The Ghost”. Something needs to happen to steer her back to the villain that I loved!
*I want to see Alexis one more time. She needs to just come back, perhaps bringing DJ. Just to finalize some things. Perhaps she could hand full ownership of Mode over to Daniel so Wilhelmina could scheme again.
*I think Marc needs his own major storyline. Amanda had her’s, I think it is time for Marc’s. (The whole straight thing sounds very ammusing. Would make for an awesome episode.
*I want Matt’s mom to come back more evil than ever. Perhaps we could even meet Matt’s dad and get within his parent’s feud? =p
*I want more baby screen time. We waited for over a year for the baby, so by golly I want to see that baby. Perhaps, an episode where Betty babysits? I think that would be an awesome episode!
*I didn’t like the way they left things with Gio. Bring him back, just for one episode to clear things up and let us know that Gio and Betty and good now. Walter, would be just about as fun. I think I might prefer him to return for an episode.
*I think we keep Matt for the rest of the show. In the end with them getting married. But not until the VERY end. I don’t want Betty going back and forth through guys anymore.
*End the Molly storyline, soon please!
*What happened to the secret “Love Dungeon” and Bradford’s office? I think using those two rooms would be great and they could be the basis of an entire episode. Such as something else being hidden and perhaps be in Bradford’s room?
*Claire needs more screen time. Enough said.
*I want to see more Justin as well!
*Lastly I want more big crime, with Betty stuck in the middle of it. Perhaps a fire a Mode, started by a more insane escaped Renee? It would be great!
Well these are my ideas, even though I’m sure they will probably not be met, they seem fun and some are needed, (Such as the Wilhelmina turning evil again thing.)
I still miss gio though
Marc and Willy were great in this episode but Amanda was in one scene the writers need to have more Marc and Amanda they are so funny.
