Ugly Betty Love Interest Mini-Spoiler

There IS Ugly Betty news to report, besides the benching. In the Ask Ausiello report mentioned in my previous post, we hear a little more spoiler-ish news about Betty’s new love interest. (Remember that?).
As we’ve reported, his name will be Matt, Betty will meet him at YETI, and he’ll be nerdy-hunky like Henry. Matt will be played by tastefully 3-named Daniel Eric Gold. He will make his first appearance on February 19th. Ausiello says, “Word is the YETI hottie is concealing a major secret, and it’s not that he’s loaded (although he isn’t terribly forthcoming about that bit, either).”
OK, let me say this right now: if Matt is married, or has a girlfriend that’s having a baby, or is the long-lost son of any of the characters of the show, I swear I’m going to walk to Silvio Horta’s house and kick his dog.*
I know many of you roll your eyes at the thought of another love interest for Betty, and many of you think it will spark new interest in the show if it’s handled well. I tend to be in the latter category. It’s become obvious that Ugly Betty is not going to become the Mary Tyler Moore show, after all. YETI is part of the show, but it really isn’t going to be the focus. A romance, done differently from the previous 3 or 4 (remember Walter?) would add a little spark.
Anyway, starting February 19th, we’ll see what the Ugly Betty writers are up to, romatically!
*NOTE – I wouldn’t really kick Silvio Horta’s dog. It’s an expression we use in my part of the country to relay strong feeling. No animals were harmed in the creation of this post.

I want to see what kind of changes Matt will make in Betty’s life just like the men that came and went before him.
There’s no point in watching a show where a beauty-challenged girl succeeds in her career. That’s already what most of us are, we don’t need to be reminded. What we need is hope that even being like this we can find the love of our dreams.
at first i was like WTH? but i am going to give this guy a chance. as for february 19, tom is that the next date for the upcoming episode, or do we have to wait until JUNE when season 3 resumes ?
this is start to get annoying. O c’mon, UB just got out of henry/gio, now Jess/matt? I really want to know why so many guys are falling for her in such short spam?
The benching really only spells demise for UB. I believe part of the reason for declining rating is due to too many reruns or skips. Too much anticipation builtup, then the eps are just soso to good, not wow, so they become a let-down… then people leave. Unless you are 24, i don’t think a 2-3 month “hiatus” helps any show, it’s like an excuse to cancel the show, or in the real world, “set up to fail”. That, is really a shame.
Maybe Matt’s big secret is he’s gay. The spoiler said he is loaded, so maybe whoever is holding the pursestrings,daddy,wouldn’t approve of Matt’s lifestyle, so he keeps it a secret.
The good thing is that since it won’t work out with Betty, maybe there could be a Matt/Mark
storyline.
I kinda agree with AD that we all want to see the plain girl get some action but that doesn’t mean we have to see like six guys falling for her in the space of three seasons plus guys hitting on her in the elevator etc. That’s not what happens to real ugly girls. And ok, so we know that Betty isn’t ugly but I’d like to be able to suspend our disbelief and think that she is since that was kind of the point of the show. But even hot girls don’t usually get that many dates, it’s like every guy she talks to apart from Daniel likes her.
I’m willing to give him a chance; he might be a really good character but I hope he doesn’t start flirting with her right away. I’d like to see a friendship, maybe even see them work as a team to get something done like Betty/Henry in Petra Gate or at the real girls’ show, or like Betty and Daniel do all the time. If he helps Betty grow up that can only be a good thing.
And I want the secret to be a really small thing like something that could happen in real life…I don’t know, I’m not a writer, but I’d just prefer it not to be another stupid cliched contrived nonsense like secret baby/wife/parentage I mean come on. I actually quite like the gay suggestion or if he is transgender maybe? I know they did that with Alexis but we only ever got to see her post-op. I don’t know, just a thought. Ooh, maybe he’s Gio’s brother!! And Betty fell for him because of the similarity (ok, there doesn’t seem to be any, but there might be!)
CCP, I was thinking the same thing about the tie in with Gio. It’s that glimmer of hope within me that refuses to die that’s speaking, really. But what better way to bring back the fans, then to get Gio back…
A few of the members at the ‘Bachelor/Butterfly’ community are discussing a very interesting and plausible theory: What if Matt is Daniel’s half-brother (i.e., Bradford’s love-child)? That could explain why his secret would impact Betty’s life in a big way. After all, not only would he be Daniel’s long-lost brother, but he’d also be entitled to a piece of the Meade empire. What a shocker that would be if this is the case! And so far, I like the sound of it. So I’m hoping the B&B members are right about this.

as for Matt being 1/2 bro to Daniel, nice twist, but certainly won’t be revealed anytime soon, unless he has been scheming all along and courting betty to get more scoop on mead. but then WHY, Amanda would be far easier a target.

No, I also doubt the truth will be revealed anytime soon. If Matt turns out to be Daniel’s half-brother, there’s a chance he may be shy about the whole thing. He doesn’t necessarily have to be a schemer. Chances are, he could be the type that’s afraid of coming forward with the truth, so he keeps a low profile and watches from afar – that is, until he gets closer to Betty and opens up. But who knows? We’ll have to wait and see what’s really going on here…
In any case, I personally think this theory would be great material for the Season 3 finale. But generally speaking, I’m sure anything that Matt reveals would make for a great climactic ending to the season.
So there is going to be romance in season 3. I am watching but I just don’t get it. Did they change their mind so easily after they dismissed the whole romance packed issue of last season and trying to justify it with the urge to make Betty “follow her dreams and focus on her work”.
This season has Betty falling in love with two NEW guys and being selfish enough to kick the butt of two other guys who could have been the “love of her dreams”. I think they are just trying to make Betty sweat her Sex and the City dream life in New York.
If they want to bring back romance… why not bring back Gio? They never gave him the chance to be a regular cast.

MJ, that makes sense to me – especially since it was mentioned earlier that Matt’s big secret would have a major impact on Betty’s life. What better way to do that than to disrupt her boss/friend’s life and by extension, her life at Mode?
At this point, I think that’s more plausible than anything else I’ve been considering…
Ok if they’re going for a Henry-esque person, then why don’t they bring back HENRY?!

Sorry about the rudeness, but its just I haven’t enjoyed watching as much as I did last season and its just stupid for Betty to be jumping from guy to guy ala Amanda. That’s not Betty.
I want season 2 Betty back please (including Sugarstick)!

Bias or not, I think he would look more like Henry than SB. They are setting up to be morelike Henry because they made the retarded desision to not bring CG and FR back on the show.
I am still hoping that te end of the season will bring back some familiar faces!
I agree with BD they really made a lame decision not bringing Rodriguez (or Gorham) and they are trying to keep dragging their names in this season unable to acknowledge that what we really want is them back.

I think what Deb said will actually end up being the case. I just have this feeling that Betty will be hesitant about being with Matt, but somehow, circumstances will throw them together.

I also like the whole Meade brother theory. Daniel is getting brothers by the minute: the return of Alexis, Wilhelmina’s new spawn and now another brother…
I guess Matt will pursue her but she will eventually fall in love, won’t she? She is the leading character and he is the new love interest. That’s to be expected.
