Happy Birthday, Freddy Rodriguez!
January 17, 2009 by Tom
Today is birthday of Freddy Rodriguez. For those of you who are new to this site and Ugly Betty in general, Rodriguez plays Gio, the Sandwich Guy, who was a season 2 love interest for Betty. He developed quite a following (some of it carrying over from his work with Six Feet Under), and was one of the subjects of the biggest flame war we’ve ever had at Ugly Betty News.
(The other being Christopher Gorham, who played Betty’s other love interest, Henry). Both have gone on to other successes, so each star’s fans can certainly be proud.
Most recently, Freddy was in the movie Nothing Like The Holidays (which he also executive-produced). He was also in the highly-acclaimed movie Bottle Shock, and his IMDB page lists him as “rumored” in a thriller film called “Identity”.
Of course, the door has never been closed for Rodriguez to make more appearances on Ugly Betty. On the show, Gio had kinda-sorta made his peace with Betty’s “breaking his heart” (and causing him to lose his prized cheese). As things stand, he could easily return.
Thanks to LadyT and the Getty Girls for the heads up on Freddy’s birthday. Wish I could have made the celebration y’all had last night!
Happy birthday, Freddy!

Feliz Cumpleaños, Freddy!!! We love you!!!
There was also news about him working on a new film (horror/thriller) called “Fortuna”, with Dominic Monaghan (Lost/Lord of the Rings) but nothing else has been said about it, so it was probably canceled. What is definitely true is that he is producing and acting a new film in Puerto Rico called “Julito Maraña”. In the interviews he seems very conscious about his heritage and he is always keen in the promotion of Latinos in the Hollywood industry. Keep the good work, Freddy!
I really wish him the best of success, health and happiness for him and his family!!!
(Man! I really want him back in Ugly Betty)
Thanks, Tom. Ship wars?! yeah, *nostalgic* sigh! those were the good days…
Thank you for posting this on Freddy Rodriguez’s birthday. What a nice tribute to Freddy and a nice gift to the Getty girls. I hope you’re right and that episode 3.04 won’t be the last that Betty sees of Gio!
Yes thank you for this post. Dont worry Tom, there will be other webshows for you to attend. Freddy is an amazing actor and an overall nice guy. I am proud to be a Getty Girl!
Happy Birthday Freddy!!!
Hi Tom,
Nice photo choice for Freddy – thanks for posting!
My personal opinion is the story arc for the Gio character was flawed. I’m not qualified to say what was wrong with it (is there an English major in the audience?) but it seemed to me like they violated some kind of rule of story telling.
They went to a lot of trouble to develop a well defined and lovable character over a season, cast the freakin’ adorable Freddy Rodriguez in the role, built his story up to a peak for the season 2 finale and then they go and unceremoniously drop him.
Just not right. Emotionally unsatisfying to say the least.
I hope the show’s creators will wise up and bring Gio back.
FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS FREDDY!
your a phenomenal actor and a huge inspiration!!
Happy Birthday Freddy,I miss Gio on Ugly Betty
Happy Birthday Freddy!
We miss seeing you on UB but look forward to your upcoming movies. Thanks for posting this, Tom.
Happy Bday Freddy!! I hope you have a great year and COME BACK TO UB! We miss you!
(But in all fairness, I checked the archives and you made 3 posts on CHris Gorham’s birthday, August 14th, none of which announced his birthday. Yes, I really am that bored)
(and by “you” I mean Tom, not Freddy, lol)
Happy Bday, Freddy! My wish is for him to land an Oscar worthy role in the next year but I’m with Beatrice: I want him back as Gio on Ugly Betty!!! If the writers developed his character, I’m almost certain he could win another Emmy. He’s a wonderful actor.
Sorry, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role on Six Feet Under. I hope he returns to Ugly Betty and try for an Emmy again! He’s one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood.
Well OMG-UB if Freddy were the one that had posted what you said on UBN I would be so thrilled that I would print-screen the page and frame it. (yeah, I am that fanatic).
Way to change the subject of my post lol
I hope Freddy had a wonderful 34th birthday!
Aw, Tom. You didn’t mention Cliff! David Blue’s birthday was the 17th as well.
Hey that is cool! Two actors that play some of my favorite characters in Ugly Betty. I didn’t know that! Oh happy birthday Cliff!
Oh my goodness! Happy birthday to David as well!!
soryy soryy love you FREDYYYYYY
