Michael Urie at 2008 National Television Awards

NATIONAL TELEVISION AWARDS 2008

Michael Urie recently hopped across the pond to attend the National Television Awards, broadcast on ITV from Albert Hall. Ugly Betty was nominated for Most Popular Comedy Programme (I LOVE spelling it that way!), although the award went to Benidorm.

This is an interesting look for Urie; it’s almost as if he stole Alec Mapa’s glasses.

It appears I’m not the only one wondering what’s going on with urie’s character Marc. 3.07, Crush’d, was a disaster for him. Cheating on Cliff, and not even over some long term emotional attachment, but anonymous sex (stereotype much, UB writers?). Then, in a moment of guilt, he proposes marriage?

I know Marc has done many dastardly deeds in Wilhelmina’s name, but this just feels different. The only thing worse he could do is betray Amanda. Please, UB writiers, Marc should be ruthless at work, loveable and sympathetic at home. That’s how I feel about it at least.

Tom, you have echoed my sentiments exactly.

and you’ve made an interesting point- if marc has to be bitchy and mean, let him do so whilst he is working at mode. but in regards to his personal life and relationship, that ought to be a different matter altogether. he has done plenty of bad things, but never did i imagine himself getting caught up in this fiasco and hurting the people he truly cares for.

as i said before, this is an attempt by the writers to sabatage and scrutinise michael’s character, and i am not pleased at all. but of course, if marc were to also wreck his friendship with amanda, then well, us marc and mandy shippers’ would be even more furious and dissatisfied.

the writers had better come up with a good conclusion to this rather (awful) storyline and wrap things up as quickly as possible by getting marc and cliff to consumate their relationship, because i absolutely loathed it.

  2. miss waiching liu says:

oh and btw, in regards to michael, yes he was in london a few weeks ago and he looked great. though i hadn’t realised at the time he was paying a visit.

I don’t know. I kinda like where the writers are taking this story. Marc has always had insecurities about dating Cliff since the first time they met. What he did doesn’t totally surprise me. I think there is a big lesson that both Marc and Cliff will learn from this incident. Maybe this is how the writers will get rid of Cliff at the end of the season when he eventually finds out before the wedding. Also, if Cliff leaves him, it will be Marc who will ultimately pay the huge price of what he did. Cliff is chubby but he can find someone better who isn’t insecure about dating someone who doesn’t look like a body builder. But I am interested to see what will happen next and how Cliff will find out.

I have to say, Micheal was hilarious whilst presenting an award at the National Television awards. I could seriously not stop laughing when he smartened out Sir Trevor McDonald!

  5. miss waiching liu says:

to teamgetty- yes, you are right when you mentioned that marc might be an insecure person, who feels uncomfortable about taking his relationship with cliff forward. for all his bitchy comments, and as he still has a heart, marc is also a little naive perhaps and lacks confidence and belief in himself as a person, when it comes to love. the fact that he went out with the bodybuilder guy implies somewhat that marc is interested only in the sex when it comes to dating, but not the things that go beyond that in a relationship, like marriage perhaps.

however, i think marc was scared and just panicked and whilst his reaction was just not on, and out of character for me anyway, i still do not believe he would go out of his way in hurting the people he loves and cares for.

and why do people automatically assume that just because every person who have cheated on their partner, automatically makes them a bad person? people make assumptions on things they do not understand, and with marc, he is a character some find annoying, or dislikable just because of the way he treats betty, christina and daniel for instance in the workplace.

i want cliff to stay, and i hope he goes out of his way in making marc see the error of his ways, and for marc himself to stop worrying and to take the next step and not be afraid of what lies ahead for the pair of them.

  6. TeamGetty says:

Hooking up with a guy in Betty’s apartment was just dumb. Cliff is bound to find out. I think Betty might find out first though. And since she always has to do the right thing, she’ll probably pressure Marc into telling Cliff the truth. Or Cliff will go to Betty’s apartment for something and run into the bodybuilder guy who will slip that he thinks his friend is hot and had a great time with him the night of the party. There are a lot of possible scenarios but I don’t know how Marc is going to talk his way out of this one. I think he will lose Cliff.

  7. miss waiching liu says:

teamgetty- no doubt that getting involved with that bloke was inane and stupid. i actually hope cliff finds out, but at the same time, i hope marc goes out of his way to make it up to him, and not just by proposing to cliff.

marc will have regrets over what he did, but somehow he needs to confide in someone about this before he turns to cliff. preferbly betty because she’d be more understanding and then confess to cliff what he had done afterwards.

i am dissapointed in marc, but i am also still infuriated at the writers for coming up with this idea in the first place. i already emailed ABC my message, highlighting my dissatisfaction over this storyline and their handing of marc and cliff’s relationship.

    Hey guys!
I totally hated the new Marcliff storyline!! Marc cheating on Cliff?? Marc is not a cheater! He is a lot of things, but cheater is not one of these. And I thought he had arleady passed the stage where he was embarrased about Cliff and had second thoughts. The writers should have taken their relationship in another level. And cheating is NOT the other step in their relationship!
I just have to say how dissapointed I am with this new story between Marc and Cliff. I love those 2 guys together! Cliff is bringin’ Marc’ s softer side on the surface and I just love that about Marc. Should I also point out what how good Michael Urie and David Blue look together?? The one makes the other look so much sweeter..!!!
I hope this cheating thing is not an idea from the writers to get Cliff out of the show. Cause he is definitely breaking up with Marc once he finds out!
WE WANT MARC AND CLIFF TOGETHER!!!!

  9. waiching liu says:

cris, you hit the nail right on the head. i just want this horrid storyline finished, wrapped up and done with and with marc making up with cliff. but i also want to see him confide to betty and tell her what he did and for her to offer him advice on what marc should do.

season 1 marc would never have turned his back on his boyfriend and sleep with any guy behind his back. instead of developing their relationship and taking it forward, the writers decided to sabatage it in the worst way possible. this is NOT good whatsoever for us marc and cliff fans.

  10. Beatrice B says:

Yet another nice character and another story that appears that writers are going to kill. They really do it… they take my Gio away in one episode, and now… they are planning to throw Cliff out? after all the fans comments and press interest and promises that Cliff would be back… for this?!
I have long passed any disappointment on the writers. Now the mystery is what they are really planning to do for the rest of the season when there are no more interesting plots or stories left.

    I WANT CLIFF!!

  11. waiching liu says:

i still want to see what season 3 holds for us and i’ll think there will be more twists and turns. although having screwed with michael’s character, they better not do the same thing with amanda and her’s and marc’s friendship… or else.

*btw beatrice, if i was one of the writers, i’d bring gio back but have him working at mode as the sandwich guy and he’d be interacting with marc, amanda, daniel, christina etc at work.

  12. cris says:

    Hello guys again!
I have to say taht I totally agree with both miss waiching liu and Beatrice B. I am really disappointed with the new turn in the Marcliff relationship. I remember that before this sesason started the producers told the prees that they wanted Marc to have meatier stories and Cliff to be involved too, so that they can explore Marc’ s character. OK, I ‘ m officially dazed and confused! Is this supposed to be a “meatier” story for Marc?? Is this how they are exploring his character? Marc cheating on his cute, adorable and caring boyfriend because he told him to move in with him?? And then propose to him out of guilt just seconds after he had sex with a complete stranger?? What kind of person is this? Certainly NOT Marc St. James. They portraying him as this superfluous, mean, ruthless, horrible, untrustworthy, lying gay guy who lacks the ability to get closer to a guy who really loves him and then keeps hurting him..just ’cause he’ s not a model-looking Greek god…This is not Marc from season 2. I thought that the writers would explore his character by showing his dark, bitchier, nastier side in his professional life and his softer, sweetier, caring and loving side in his private life (Amanda -Cliff).I thought I would see “Marc in love in the process” or something. But the Marc I saw on the last episode is not a guy in love, not a caring person.
miss waiching liu, I hope that what you said will be true, meaning that Cliff and Marc will work it out eventually, though I am not that optimistic…
Beatrice B, you ‘re so right! The writers are killing another incredible character and an amazing storyline! And in such a lame way! If they decided they wanted Cliff out of the series they could it more gracefully and with less drama: like have him move to Europe for example ’cause he was offered a job he cannot turn down. And not have his heart broken and have him break up with Marc after he finds about the cheating…
    once again:
WE WANT MARC AND CLIFF TOGETHER!
WE WANT THEM TO BE A LOVING COUPLE!
    WE LOVE CLIFF!

  13. miss waiching liu says:

cris, when silvio mentioned earlier this year that marc would be getting ‘meatier’ storylines involving cliff especially, i’d thought that it meant they would be consumating their relationship and taking it to the next step.

but then when i read that marc cheats on cliff and sleeps with some stranger, i was horrified. i realise that the characters all go through bad experiences and periods in their lives and manage to come out of the other end, still unscathed. but why did the writers decided to choose marc of all people?

what, so just because he is supposed to be a mean character to betty for example at work and has a reputation of being bitchy and obnoxious, he has to be mean to his boyfriend and treat him like crap as well? do me a favour.

if this is their way of getting rid of cliff, then it is a sleazy and tacky way of doing it. when i watched marc hugging cliff, after he had slept with that bodybuilder, it left a sour taste in my mouth.

what he did was for me, TOTALLY out of character and i truly believe that as a marc fan myself, marc for all his bitchy and catty remarks and behaviour would NEVER have cheated on cliff at all.

suffice to say, the writers have indeed invoked the wrath of many marc and cliff shippers’ with this ‘tasteless’ storyline.

On behalf of the British public, I would like to offer an apology to Ugly Betty. Benidorm is the worst comedy to grace our poor English screens, and I think it was clear on the faces of everyone at the awards that it was a bit of a joke that it won. Still, Michael was fantastic and got a lot of laughs.
I must now ignore the rest of the comments as series 3 isn’t airing in the UK yet, and I’m determined not to be spoiled!

  15. Beatrice B says:

Oh gals, you do know how to please me *giggle* -actually I am very easy to please. Just add Gio and water and shake–
Yes, I am surviving the demise of Gio (though as Liu said) I don´t mind him showing his face every now and then in the show. But I can´t take another blow: Cliff too?

I wonder who’s next in Horta’s witch hunting. Gio, Henry, Alexis, DJ, Tony, Betty’s most decent outfits… I bet they are going to take Willy´s child and probably also Christina.
If this show is trying to focus about growth this season I wonder if they will all come to their senses by the final episodes. I thought Marc was improving as a person. Last season he finally made a commitment to romance an unlikely guy (adorable Cliff) and now, they are making Marc regress back to where he started: to be an insensible and shallow fellow. He is playing with Cliff once again. This is unbearable! What part of “growing up” is Horta and his pack of henchmen trying to show this season?
    At least Amanda seems growing.
    WE WANT MORE CLIFF!

  16. miss waiching liu says:

if silvio horta is reading this, he should take note. it is about time the show focused not so much on what us fans want, but how we’d expect this show to be. but for them it is not through resorting to shock tactics and stupid over- the- top storylines and ideas. which has happened in so many other shows and of which led to them being axed.

if they also manage to screw up the willie/christina baby storyline too amongst other things, then this show will get cancelled, and us fans would be livid afterwards. but despite this marc/cliff storyline and a few little issues- i.e betty going backwards as a character instead of forward- i am still enjoying this season of ugly betty, nonetheless.

  17. LeatherBee says:

“I wonder who’s next in Horta’s witch hunting. Gio, Henry, Alexis, DJ, Tony, Betty’s most decent outfits… I bet they are going to take Willy´s child and probably also Christina.”

And in the end, it will probably be just Betty and Daniel. Or Wilhelmina.

Anyway, I agree with everything you guys have said. When there was talk about meatier storylines and exploring Marc’s character as well as his relationship with Cliff, I though they would develop Marc and Cliff’s relationship deeper, not throw it in the bin. I was hoping that maybe they would meet each others’ families and Cliff would be interacting more with Betty and Amanda. And that maybe Marc would finally learn that as much as he loves the fashion world, it’s nice to return home to someone who really loves you for who you are. I was waiting to see Cliff teach Marc a few valuable lessons. But maybe hell learn something from this.. and hopefully Cliff will eventually forgive him. Although I know I wouldn’t.
