Ugly Betty Stars Speak Out Against CA Proposition 8

October 27, 2008 by Tom

America Ferrera, Tony Plana, and Ana Ortiz have gotten involved in a very direct way in California politics. Here is the video:

I guess now would be a good time for a little UBN policy reminder:  we don’t directly discuss politics here, but if Ugly Betty stars are in the news, we will discuss THAT.

Here is a primer on Prop 8.

It is interesting that the three now technically spend most of their time in New York City, yet felt compelled to submit this ad in the middle of California politics.  However, Ferrera is a lifetime California resident, so it’s quite logical she’d be involved in “hometown” politics.  Ortiz and Plana have also spent quite a few years in CA until this year.

As a side note, Ferrera was heavily involved in Hillary Clinton’s campaign this past spring, but  for a while now (since Clinton dropped out of the race), she’s been on the sidelines politically.  And although I will not comment on my opinion of her views, you have to admire a young woman so young yet so aware and involved.  I didn’t realize how intelligent and in touch America was until I read Lindsay Lohan’s incoherent political blog post a while back.  (It’s not her beliefs, it’s her total inability to express them in a way people who aren’t professional celebrities can understand).

OK, I’ll stop now – It’s been hard not to pile on LiLo lately.

But then again, if you’re talking politics with the expressed purpose of NOT taking sides, it’s just best to unload on Lindsay Lohan :)

i think it is great that these actors are speaking out for what they believe in. I wish that comments on it could stay completely non-political, becasue it really makes it hard for me to listen to anything else you are saying. And i beleive everyone-even celebrities who have gone to rehab a few times-have a right to their opinions.

Well, Tom wasn’t really talking about political views. Rather, he was talking about the lack of coherency in celebrities such as LiLo articulating their political views. I assume the posting of such in a blog means one wants ones’ opinions to be known to others? Lack of coherency can ruin that. No one said her views were invalid. I agree with a view.

Yes, it is inspiring to see America so involved. The US has such low voter turnouts America is really an example. I was always struck also by how intelligent but sweet and funny she is interviews, which shows here. Genuine passion is shown. No matter your opinion, surely it is always good to see people who care so much about the issues?

I’m not really shocked they’re doing it for CA even if they’re not there anymore. It’s a big issue. I live in Boston and I’ve heard about it.
