Ugly Betty Shut Out at Emmys

There weren’t many nominations to start with, but the makers and stars of Ugly Betty went home empty from the 60th Annual Primetime Emmys last night.
America Ferrera was beaten out by Tina Fey for Outstanding Actress in a comedy series. Hey, haven’t we seen this movie before? I’ll be honest, I haven’t watched 30 Rock, so it’s hard to make a comparison. But, it sure looks like this is going to be an annual occurrence for a while.
Vanessa Williams should have won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. And I’m not the only one that feels this way. Of all the characters on Ugly Betty last season, Wilhelmina was given the most to work with, IMHO. Williams delivered with campy perfection, and I think she deserves recognition. That’s not to take anything away from Jean Smart (Samantha Who?), but I really thought this was VW’s time.
Ashley Jensen did not win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie for her portrayal as Maggie Jacobs in HBO/BBC’s Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale. The award went to Eileen Atkins for her work in PBS’ Cranford.
It could have been that I was in a bad mood due to Ugly Betty’s shutout, but the broadcast itself last night was awful. Just awful.
The set reconstructions were neat, but the writers didn’t seem to know what to do with them. I’ll be honest with you: the Laugh-In tribute bit (I’m actually old enough to remember the original) was downright painful to watch. And the rest of the skits were simply unfunny.
Add to that the fact that they seemed to constantly be “behind” time-wise, and I actually found myself longing for last year’s in-the-round fiasco.
But, I’m an optimist. This week marks the week that Betty gets her groove back, and next year at about this time, I’ll bet we’re celebrating many, many Ugly Betty wins.

And what’s with them cutting the mic when Vanessa and America were presenting? I know they were running out of time but — ugh the Emmys was just so painful to watch. :-S
Honest I did not watch 30 Rock too.I’m lit sad America not win for Outstanding actress in the comedy series,but I know she won last year.It is Vanessa and America are friend real life?,cuz they alway together alots of different picture
I agree with Lucy that it was bad, bad, bad that they had such problems with the mics when America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams presented. But the most horrible part of the night was Josh Groban! What were they thinking?
I don’t know if there was something with our connection but, at times, we thought we were watching the Emmy’s as kung-fu style. You could see the person’s mouth move then the sound come afterwards. Weird. Although, I don’t understand the award for reality host, I thought the bit was kind of funny. Overall – C
It is unbelievable that after 2 seasons of the brilliant performance Vanessa Williams has given, she still doesn’t have an Emmy!
She really deserved that award. It breaks my heart to see this happen to her.

I don’t know, Sarah, I think they were thinking “What would be really creative and funny?”, and hit the nail right on the head. That was the best part- really the only good part- of the whole night. I’ve never been a JG fan, but I was impressed by his versatility. As for 30 Rock, Emmy darling, I think the cast is great, but to me, it’s Saturday Night Live without the Live, a big pile of overrated. A lot of talent, but talent for talent’s sake. People call it unique. They should watch Ugly Betty.
Vanessa was robbed out right! Tiny Fey makes me puke. She is the most over-rated person ever!
I have to say I love Tina Fey and while America is a great actress, I guess people might see Tina as being better than her from a comedic point of view, so I wasn’t that bothered there.
Eileen Atkins doesn’t seem to have a fanlisting page or a fansite. So hey, she got the emmy, but Ashley Jensen has the more devoted fans!
But yeah, Vanessa should have won…she is SO incredible on the show and it’s ridiculous she hasn’t got an emmy for it yet.
