Set Photos: Ugly Betty Films at Coney Island
Ugly Betty continues its filming in various locations in the New York area, this time shooting a scene at Coney Island.
Everybody seems upset in the photos. If I HAD to guess, I’d say that Daniel Jr ran away and ended up at Coney Island. I only say that because I recognize the look on Eric Mabius‘ face (as a dad myself). He’s trying to coax little Daniel back to him.
We still have America Ferrera as “a little more stylish Betty”. For all the clashing, her look is still quite pleasing to the eye.
But, here’s something interesting. Unless my eyes deceive me, that’s Freddy Rodriguez in the background of some of the pics. Considering the fact that this is most likely episode 3.04 - it would appear that Rodriguez is going to be around for more than just the season premiere. Please tell me I’m not an idiot. That is FR, right?

It seems as if Daniel Jr. does run away– but it seems that Daniel has taken/followed DJ to Coney Island, but THEN he runs (3rd pic, he’s def. running). So he probably gets lost among the crowd. And why are Daniel and DJ in suits? Could they be fresh off of the trial for custody? Hmmm….

I think the pictures are probably after Daniel tells his son that he lost custody of him, since they’re both wearing suites it seems like they came from the trial. Or maybe he found out Alexis is his father (or used to be).

I think he is wearing his private school uniform (maybe?). You are right, OMG. there is some sort of custody issue going on so maybe they just left the court. Daniel Jr. must have had an argument with his “father”. but he is holding a sugar cane so they must have been there trying to talk with Daniel Jr. (did they lost the custody case?) or explaining something that upset the kid.

I’m betting that Daniel Jr. splits either before the trial or right after which may mean that the rulings don’t seem to be going in Daniel’s favor and Daniel Jr. would rather stay with him and not go with his grandparents.

Wow. I totally did not expect OMG-UB to have that kind of response.
But I can focus on other things…I’m guessing Dan Jr is going to want to stay with his father as well, especially if he and Daniel have been growing closer these past few months (I’m guess Junior will speak a little more English this season?)
I’m wondering how they’ll portray Daniel Jr’s grandparents. It will be a little hard not to vilify them considering we are mostly going to be rooting for Daniel. But unless they’re suppose to be cold-hearted freaks I think it will make sense that they’ll be fighting so hard for what might be their only grandchild who up and decided to live on the other side of the planet.

BTW, looking at these again, I’m struck by the fact that I find “Betty” attractive, but “Ameri-Betty”, sans glasses, just doesn’t look right to me.
I have a theory that Silvio Horta and Patricia Field are going to pull a “Nanny McPhee” on us, if ABC gives them enough years to pull it off. Betty will gradually, almost imperceptibly, get more attractive.
But that’s another thought for another post.
Anyway, I guess I was so shocked to see FR, I almost didn’t recognize him.
Also, I think Daniel is going to become very sypathetic this season. Yes, he was last season as well, but there were a few times I yelled “You dumba**!” at him, because he would hurt Betty by being thoughtless. I have a feeling he’s going to grow up this year, maybe even more than Betty.

That could be the truth. It was never stipulated that he would be back in the season premiere, so maybe this is his first (and possibly only) episode.
Overall, I get the feeling that this episode will have a lot more to do with Daniel and Daniel Jr. (with Betty helping out) than Gio and Betty. My first impression is that Betty and Daniel meet Gio by accident, especially since Gio isn’t shown much in these pics and several others that aren’t posted here. Perhaps this is their first meeting since the season two finale.

And this isn’t because I’m a Benry fan. Frankly, right now I’m barely a Betty fan, just an Ugly Betty fan, a Mark and Amanda fan, a Christina fan, etc.

You know I´ve always believed that. You can see noticeable changes from the first episodes of season 1 to those of season 2 and well, now season 3. I am glad they do it that way. It´s more believable.
Anyway. We still don´t know much what they are going to do with Gio this season. I am more than happy if this episode is not Gio/Betty centric. I want Gio to be a supporting character like Christina more than a central story about a love interest (didn´t work with Henry).
So far there´s only rumors in the internet. I didn´t even heard that Gio was going to be in the premiere but in “one” episode (F-Rod said so himself). But still so far we don´t know how many episodes have been written and planned. So… I don´t lose hope. Besides he is still billed as “recurrent guest star” just like Rebecca romijn and we all know she will be at least in 4 episodes.

If you live in New York ABC 7 will have a Behind The Scenes story about the Coney Island shoot during the 5-6 p.m. Local News TODAY.
They had a commercial for the news and it showed Eric/Daniel running in Coney Island.

I apologize if I came across as flaming! I was going to comment on OMG’s “Glee club” statement but I’ll stop being easily annoyed today (I’m still allowed to use pregnancy hormones as an excuse, right?).
Sometimes I think Daniel has a way of “reacting” instead of thinking about it first, so I hope Daniel doesn’t make any mistakes that will make his custody battle over Daniel Jr harder.
And now I wish I still lived in New York.

Of course I care more about Gio being in the photo than about a story line involving a new character who was shoved at us in the last episode of the season. I’m not going to apologize for that. It’s exciting to think he might be there for more than one episode.

My two cents - I agree with the theory that this may actually be the first time we see FR and if he comes around again, okay. It’s great that UB will be able to keep half of the shipping war fans if not more. I was/am for Betty/Henry, and now that things change, I’m okay with that, and I understand that all the Freddy Fans are excited to even catch a glimpse of him but in all fairness this show isn’t going to be about Betty’s love life with a little bit of “Life” thrown in there anymore. I agree with OMG-UB that even the fans have become so engrossed into B.T-dubs (Oh, I love Kenny) love life that we forgot what the show was about.
With that being said, I really have high hopes for season 3 for the show to be turned around into a more positive direction with more interesting storylines; for example - Willie. I love her to death but now that she has won MODE, what’s next? More evil doing? Honestly, I hope not. I want to see the vulnerable side of Willie again like in season 1. I could add so much more, but I’ll keep the rest of my general UB thoughts to myself.

Really? Well, that certainly is very interesting news to me! LOL. And I think it supports the theory that I’ve seen put out there by several Ugly Betty fans since last season’s finale: Daniel Jr. was NEVER Daniel’s son. (Maybe some of those Detty fans are right. Could Alexis be Daniel Jr.’s true parent? Personally, I’ve wanted it to be that way.)
Speaking as a neutral party - and in all fairness - I think “OMG UB” has a right to her opinion. If Gio isn’t of interest to her, that’s cool. Personally, I actually find this Daniel-and-’son’ story much more fascinating than the reappearance of Mr. Rodriguez. No offense to the Getty shippers, of course.

Hi! I just saw the news story. It was really good.
They had Betty playing carnival games with Daniel.
In the scene with Daniel, Betty won the game and she gave him a HIGH FIVE! :D
Meanwhile, Lots of Freddy/Gio in the background but….
There was a scene with Betty, Gio and Daneil Jr. who was called D.J. in the newstory.
Betty, Gio and D.J. are also playing a game and D.J. is having a great time and he LIKES Gio! :D
D.J. looked at Betty and Gio and smiled at them! :D
Betty and Gio are watching D.J. and you could see there was some tension/longing between Gio and Betty.
America couldn’t give away any secrets and the reporter tried: LOL!

Ah I just saw the short TV behind the scenes clips at Channel 7 eyewitness news (probably soon they`ll post it in youtube). God Bless international cable!
There was nothing revealing. But I loved to see shots of Betty, Daniel, Gio (his back mostly) and the one they call DJ (Daniel jr… cute!)
They interviewed the director and he said he was pleased to film in NYC. America said she couldn`t say anything about the cliffhanger.

I saw the news report(thank you). There are still a lot of ifs with the Daniel and Daniel Junior storyline. I’m guessing they are just hanging out with Betty and Gio, and then like others sites say, maybe Daniel will get some type of phone call or something and someone will break the news that Daniel isn’t his father.
Also, does DJ’s actor speak English?

I saw the story, and this is what I saw:
- Betty was playing the carnival games with Daniel Jr. That’s who she was hi-fiving - although it did look like Daniel at first.
- As for Betty and Gio sharing any “look”, well - actually, it didn’t appear that way to me. It looks like Betty was giving Gio one of those looks like she was about to roll her eyes. Like, “Oh, come on. Be nice.” LOL.

Although I’m trying not to keep my hopes up about what will happen, I’m elated to see Freddy/Gio again.
Not that we should have to account our feelings or expressions to anyone, I do think that we are all focusing and excited about Freddy on this thread (and others) because it’s the first day we’ve seen any news from him. And pictures? Forget about it! Of course we’re excited.
We may not be as excited about Daniel, DJ, and Betty because we’ve been hearing spoilers about them all summer.
I think it’s only fair for us to celebrate this small victory. So here I go: WOO HOO!

Just finished reading previous comments. I can see some people are getting irritated by our getty fan-girling. I guess my comment didn’t make it any better, but it’s so hard not to get exited about it after 3 Gio-less months.
I don’t have much to add to the DJ speculation except that this story line seems like the kind of arcs that UB would only have to deal with for several episodes then TPTB find away to “return back to normal” i.e. Daniel not being a father. I really like Daniel as a father, so I think it would be sad for DJ to leave to France, but I hope the whole thing helps Daniel’s character develop.
Well, no matter what happens, I think we can all expect UB writers to focus less on Betty’s love life to keep the balance of the show intact.

Hey, shippers can’t help shipping, and I’m not embarassed to say I’m happy to see Gio back again. I was worried that it might be he was going to have 2 min in Episode 1 that had already been shot and that would be the last of him. I’ll be thrilled if he turns out to be back for more and the Getty story continues. The writers spent a lot of effort getting us hooked on this story last year, building up to a climax that seemed to promise more, so it would be pretty odd if we all of a sudden just lost interest. But I’m also engaged by the story of Daniel and Daniel Jr. and happy to see it being acted out, and perfectly open to seeing a lot of other things going on besides love-life stuff. I think shippers get an unfair rap in being accused of wanting it to be Getty, Getty, Getty and nothing else all the time. We got along fine with Gio in just 9 episodes last year, because the Gio-Betty story was always there in the background. But I think just about all of us have other favorites we keep an eye on and want to see in stories, too–Mark/Amanda, Hilda/Ignacio/Justin, Willi, Marc/Cliff, Christina, etc. But why shouldn’t we get our day to revel in the fact that something we feared might not happen has happened after all: GIO’S BACK!!!!!!!

In general, I think shippers do get a bad rap. Trust me, I know what it means firsthand.
As a member of the D/B ship, I think our group has gotten a lot of that over the past two years. And I think that the rudeness of others has made some D/B shippers feel like outcasts, which is very unfortunate.
In that sense, I can empathize with other shippers who feel like they’re being unfairly treated. But even so, I believe that people are entitled to their opinions - just like OMG-UB. It’s really just a matter of everyone playing nice when discussing these shipping situations.
On a separate note: Tom, I think Daniel was definitely more sympathetic and kind towards Betty in Season 2. Actually, his behavior in Season 1 was more bothersome to me, but overall? Daniel is maturing without a doubt - all thanks to his current relationship with Betty. Generally speaking, I definitely don’t expect his character to improve too fast, or else, where would the writers go with his character? But yes - he’s getting better, slowly but surely.
I personally love seeing Daniel interact with Daniel Jr., but honestly, I never really expected (or wanted) the boy to be his son. To me, the whole point of this experience is to provide Daniel with a vehicle for growth. Of course, I’m sure this will be a painful situation for both Daniel and the boy to go through, but no matter what happens, Daniel will only become stronger.
And in the end, that’s all that really matters.
BTW, Tom, I never got to congratulate you on UBN’s one-year anniversary, so congratulations! Sorry to have missed out on saying that earlier! :)

And I agree with Livia. Just because we are extremely excited about FR/Gio does not mean we aren’t invested in the other storylines as well.
Also, no one’s saying that OMG-UB isn’t entitled to her own opinion. But that does not mean that we aren’t allowed to respectfully disagree and defend ourselves from comments that seem disrespectful and insulting. And as I read this thread, I think that’s what we’ve done.

I also agree everyone is entitled to their opinions. I just think everyone should be entitled to their reactions as well! Despite my Freddy fascination I do hope we get a taste of Betty’s independence and less of her love life! Hilda’s love life on the other hand, I’m all for!

Question: Am I the only one on the fence about Betty’s possible change in appearance?
I can understand that as she gets older and is more career established and professional, people might expect her to look a certain way. And I’m ALL FOR losing the braces. But part of me likes how unique Betty is. The fact that she works for a high fashion magazine and even people outside of Mode don’t dress as clashy as she does and she still manages to dress that way without batting an eye says a lot.
Or by polishing her up do we mean basically the same type of style in clothes, just maybe a little more trendy and a trendier hairstyle?

I really don’t want to see her turn into a “beautiful butterfly.” I feel like the point of the show is that she already is beautiful.
If she’s comfortable with the way she looks now and people love her for who she is, why change her? Although, I’m with everyone else that the braces do need to finally go this season.

Laura, you put a lot more meaning into what I said than what was originally intended. There’s no need to be so sensitive about it. And no one said you aren’t entitled to your opinion.
And yes, it is established that Ugly Betty is a TV show. I’m not sure what you meant by stating that, though.
I didn’t mean to offend you, and I’m sorry that you see it that way. But I was making a neutral statement, and it wasn’t directed against you personally. Had this situation been completely reversed (i.e., Henry came back instead of Gio, and everyone was cheering his reappearance, while OMG-UB was the lone Gio fan with a differing point-of-view), I would’ve still said the same thing regarding her right to speak. That is, after all, what fairness is. All fans - including G/B, H/B, and D/B “shippers” - should be able to speak freely and gush, rant, rave, etc. about the posted topics on this site.
I know that many of the commentators on this post are Getty fans, but I honestly cannot see what’s wrong with me stating my preference for the Meade storyline.
You say that no one here is trying to make me feel bad about caring more for the Daniel/Daniel Jr. storyline. However, your reply seems to have done that.

I feel personally attacked by you. OMG was clearly outnumbered and I was trying to throw in some other information for her to relate to while also expressing my happiness. This was in spite of the fact that she was being a little unkind to the Gettys.
If Henry has come back I would not have joined the celebratory conversation with my opposite opinion even though the Constitution provides me that right. I would have let the people be happy. That’s just me.
And no, I’m not trying to make you feel bad about your preference for the Daniel storyline.

Angie, as a Getty shipper, I will tell you that I found neutrality in your original statement and I can respect that.
I honestly haven’t read through all of the recent posts, but I wanted to say now before it goes any further, that it’s not an issue of *what* we want to watch.
I am perfectly fine with you preferring the DJ/Daniel storyline. I’m perfectly fine with OMG-UB not enjoying the Gio/Betty storyline.
We are just asking that everyone is okay with *us* enjoying the Betty/Gio storyline. I don’t mind if you disagree with my preference, but please don’t insult it. And OMG-UB insulted my preference unprovoked and for no reason.
We have not done that to her and I would like to have the same respect shown back to me.

As for the whole “Gio Show/ Getty squee club” comment, that was sort of uncalled for… I guess. But free speech, correct? I wasn’t insulting all Getty fans by any means. And I did have a reason, which was to get these comments back on track (although apparently it did the opposite lol). I didn’t “insult your preference”. B, you are much more level-headed than I, which I’ll prove in this post, but I promise to stop dragging out this silliness much further.
OMG-UB, please don’t insult my intelligence by trying to find a loop hole with what you meant. You faceciously just implied that you meant it sarcastically. If you’re going to be sarcastic, at least own up to your comments. You’re right. You have free speech–stand up for it if you’re going to invoke it.
That being said, I have free speech as well and I have used it and I’m about to do so again. I’m not going to backpedal with you. I stand by my words. I have been respectful of you and whatever your preferences are (which I clearly have known for months is not Gio/Betty). You have the right to your opinion and I have the right to mine.
You *also* have the right to be as sarcastic as you want (as long as Tom allows it), but the freedom of speech you speak of gives me the exact same right to ask you politely to be more fair and respectful (as long as Tom allows it).
My entire point was that you are the one that got this thread side-tracked with a snide comment. And then you followed that up with what you proclaim yourself was another comment that was uncalled for. No matter what storyline we prefer or what couple we ship, I think we should all be adult enough to have a conversation without trying to insult and anger each other.
So, as I tried to do before and as Beatrice did much more eloquently than I did, please let’s try to continue our conversations with polite discourse and a sharing of snarky-free opinions. I’m sure Tom’s nerves would be much better if we did so. :)

Has anyone seen the new photoshoot? I think B posted it.
Gio’s back in the baseball pants! I think this might be my favorite version of Gio because quite frankly, you can’t go wrong with a tiny, hot Latino in a baseball uniform.
I can’t wait to find out how this scene fits into the season. Is it a late shot that will be slipped into the premiere? Is it a flashback or dream for this Coney Island episode?
I think it’s pretty much a 50/50 chance of either, but I’m hoping that it’s Betty dream in the beginning of this CI episode that sets up when Gio returns later in the episode. I think that would blend in well.
Either way, always go with the baseball pants. ;)

Better, Wooster? I think it looks bushier and worse. It’s not quite as bad as S1, but it looks like a regression from S2 hair. I will say that Betty looks very pretty in the pics I’ve seen, though. Her face… not her clothes. I haven’t quite warmed up to those clothes.

As primarily a lurker, I find the sarcastic and other negative comments disconcerting. Most of the unconstructive comments recently posted here serve no purpose, besides feeding an non-existent “ship” war. My reading of these comments sounds like something elementary school kids do at recess to help themselves fit into a popular group. In the larger scheme of things, we all enjoy Ugly Betty. We should all be able to speak together about a show that feeds a different part of each of us. This divisiveness does nothing but make fans of the show separate into different “groups” and have conflicts. Please everyone, if you see something that offends you, take a deep breath, count to ten, and remember the old saying our parents taught us all: “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything”.Thank you for reading this in the spirit it is intended, for all of us to be able to talk together about a show we all enjoy.

After reading all of this, I have a few choice words for people from both sides of the camp. So, I’m going to be very straightforward here and tell it as it is. Sorry if this is getting “off” track, but I have to get this off of my chest since I think it needs to be said. If you like it or don’t like it - that’s fine.
- Laura, I saw the hint of sarcasm in OMG-UB’s post, so I know why you replied with a similar dose of sarcasm when you told her, “That is interesting but I’m sorry, I’m still more excited about Freddy.” But I didn’t see it in angie’s post, so I don’t know why you’re attacking her and insisting that she has it out for you. She said she found the Daniel Jr. storyline more interesting than Freddy’s reappearance, but how was that an attack on you personally? Frankly, I think that your replies in this regard are no better than those of the “enemy” that you are trying to deal with - namely OMG-UB, an embittered Hetty fan. In fact, you sound just as bad as some of those combative, die-hard Hetty fans who used to post around here a lot. I always wondered if that would eventually happen with some Getty fans - if some would start acting high and mighty just like some of those Hetty folks who came before. Well, unfortunately, in my opinion, your posts suggest that you fall in that boat.

- M, I don’t know what you’re talking about but there is no official article referring to Freddy’s return in Tom’s post. The only thing that he posted were pictures of Betty, Daniel, and Gio, along with short personal commentary for each of those characters. He didn’t emphasize Freddy/Gio’s return above anything else. If you’re referring to the number of Freddy/Gio comments left by the Getty fans, well - that doesn’t count as an article.
And just in case you’re wondering, I’m a big UB fan, but I’m no longer invested in the shipping issues - especially with all of these online wars that seem to be pervading practically every site, including supposedly “neutral” public places like this one. After what I saw here last season with Hetty vs. Getty, I was turned off from coming here more often. And despite assertions to the contrary, I doubt the atmosphere will change anytime soon when new guy Val Emmich comes along. Getty vs. Jetty? Yeah. It’s guaranteed to happen - just as night follows day.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s happening already.
As for shipping in general, it’s easy to say “let’s try to get along”, but we all know that it’s not meant to happen - especially since everyone wants their ship to come out on top in the end.
And what a pity that is.

Probably you are right Denise. I don´t think he will get lost. Probably they are all in Coney Island trying to explain something to him. He hears something he doesn´t like and he runs and hides because he is mad about his father. He probably doesn´t want to be found.
