America Ferrera, Ugly Betty Win Big at ALMA Awards
The ALMA awards were held yesterday, and Ugly Betty had a field day. The awards (The American Latino Media Arts Award or ALMA) are awarded to performers who promote positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment field.
This big winner, of course, was America Ferrera, who won Entertainer of the Year.
Ugly Betty also won the big ensemble award: Performance by a Latino Ensemble in a Television Series. (To me, this is a no-brainer. No other show even comes close).
Linda Mendoza also won the Director of a Television Series award for her work on ugly Betty.
Also, “La Misma Luna“, in which which America Ferrera had a part, won a Special Achievement award.
We often talk about how Ugly Betty is a “gay friendly” show, or a show friendly to “normal-sized women”. The show is groundbreaking in those ways, but it is also by far the best show on television that highlights positive portrayals of Latinos.

The ALMA awards will air on ABC on September 12. Congratulations America Ferrera and Ugly Betty!

Thanks for the write-up, I’ll have to check the show out when it airs.
I realize I’m preaching to the choir here, but America is just so brilliantly awesome and the primary reason for this show’s success. It makes me happy to see a deserving artist get the accolades she deserves.
