Poll: Do You Like Betty’s New ‘Un-Style’?
July 31, 2008 by Tom
One thing missed in all the hoopla about the Ugly Betty set photos that showed that Rebecca Romijn was most likely pregnant (which turned out to be true), was that Patricia Field was at it again. In the scene where the Meades are leaving the building together, Betty runs out to meet them.
What she is wearing is noticeably not-quite-fashionable, yet is pleasing to the eye nonetheless.
It looks like this new Carrie-Bradshaw-wannabe Betty will be present from the very first episode in season 3.
I’ll be honest: the whole idea is growing on me. It’s Betty, yet it’s not her at the same time. It reminds me of when my wife gets a drastically different haircut – she’s familiar, yet mysterious at the same time.
I know many have problems with this direction. It is awful sudden, and it kind of goes against the Betty ethos that clothes do not make the person. I hear you, and on a certain level I agree.
However, I think this new ‘un-style’ of Betty’s is serving two purposes:
- It lets Betty grow as a person, even though she’s not quite sure what she’s doing.
- It is a visible and outward sign that the show is going to go in a radically new direction from season 2.
Finally – see what Betty’s wearing again? Her Boleyn “B”!
So, now I leave it up to you. What do you think? Do you like the fact that Betty is attempting to be more fashionable?

Oh I like her new wacky style alright. I really want her to grow up. A grown up woman wouldn´t have made so many mistakes as she did last season.
I am sure this new Betty will be amazing. They are putting a lot of effort to make the series better and funnier. I can´t wait for the premiere.
Could someone tell me where the “Boleyn” necklace comes from? Was it a gift from Henry?
As for Betty’s style – it reminds me of “dressing up” when I was a child… far too much of everything (or as Gok would no doubt tell us here in the UK – “too much layering”!), and all a bit over the top. And I guess her motives are much the same – she’s trying to be grown up and fit in with the world around her.
Being more of a tomboy myself, I’d like to see Betty grappling with a monkey wrench and developing callouses whilst wrestling with a tyre iron, but heh-ho, I guess I’m probably in a minority here!
oh the Boleyn necklace was a gift from Betty´s deceased mother.
pleased to meet you.
But we are wondering if she will change it because in some pictures she is wearing a blue descending dove.
oh don´t worry. I am not much into fashion either. I am some sort of a tomboy myself too.
