Ugly Betty Grabs 6 Emmy Nominations
July 17, 2008 by Tom
The Emmy Award nominations were announced this morning, and Ugly Betty had six of them. Only two were in the “major” categories, proving that the Academy was not exactly blown away by season two of the show.
America Ferrera, of course, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series. She’ll be going up against Tina Fey,Christina Applegate,Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Mary-Louise Parker.
Vanessa Williams got the nomination for got the nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series . I really think she’ll win this time. She’s up against Kristin Chenoweth, Jean Smart, Amy Poehler and Holland Taylor.
Other nominations for Ugly Betty:
- Outstanding Art Direction For A Single-camera Series (Mark Worthington, Production Designer, Jim Wallis, Art Director, Archie D’Amico, Set Decorator) - How Betty Got Her Grieve Back
- Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series (Jeff Greenberg, C.S.A., Mark Scott, C.S.A)
- Outstanding Costumes For A Series (Eduardo Castro,Michael Chapman - Bananas For Betty)
- Outstanding Hairstyling For A Single-camera Series (Mary Ann Valdes, Lynda K. Walker, Norma Lee, Kimi Messina) - A Nice Day For A Posh Wedding
OK,I’ve got a silly question. Greenberg and Scott were good enough to get nominated for Outstanding Casting, yet Ugly Betty received not ONE Guest Star nomination? 30 Rock got four of the five guest actor noms. Hello, Academy? Victor Garber? David Blue? Freddy Rodriguez? (Or did he qualify? I can’t remember)
For Guest Actress, 30 Rock received 3 noms, Desperate Housewives 2. What about Victoria Beckham? Gabrielle Union? Mo’Nique?
I’m actually more upset about the “minor” nominations this year. Although ONE day they’re going to have to give Michael Urie a nomination for Supporting Actor.

They better win for costumes! I mean, Mode is all about the clothes (and so is Betty!)! But B4B wasn’t the best clothes ep…. if I remember correctly. Ah well. AND4APW was a good pick for hair, though.
congrats to america and vanessa williams! both well deserved. i can’t imagine that the other supporting nominees are any more deserving than judith light, though. she is brilliant as claire.
i wish the show itself had been nominated, of course, but i tend to think season two was a more dramatic than comedic year for ugly betty. the academy also tends to play it very conservative, and i wouldn’t give up this show’s unique style for all of (the smug and overrated) “30 Rock’s” nominations.
6 is pretty good though!
Michael WILL get a nomination one day, and so will Becki! I am desperate to see these 2 get nominated! It really sucks they aren’t getting recognised
Personally, without them the show would contain a lot less humour in it for me. And they are definately the main reason why UB is my favourite show. But good on America and Vanessa! I hope they win!
Not so shocking that UB wasn’t nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series as S2 was more drama than comedy like a previous commenter mentioned. I was prepared not to hear UB mentioned in that category.
And we were thinking the same thing over at the MGSG Live Blogging about the casting nomination. Though looking back at what was submitted for some of the guest actors/actresses (and YES Freddy Rodriguez qualified for that category and though nothing confirmed his placement on the short list, he was rumored to be a favorite) it’s not too surprising. They didn’t exactly pick the best episodes to highlight the casting choices/actors performances.
It seems the overall outcome from the nominations is that the show is visually appealing, but the content just wasn’t there for the Emmy judges. Hopefully that means they’ll showcase more of the comedy we fans love in Season 3! (And also hopefully give more meatier content for the men of UB–I want to see Michael Urie nominated next year!)
Oh! And here is America Ferrera’s reaction to the nomination from Variety:
“I got up and watched the announcements on TV. I heard it from Kristin Chenoweth’s mouth.”
“I am looking forward to sitting in a seat that is not behind the stage. Last year, with the circular stage, we looked at everyone’s backs. I hope that doesn’t happen again this year.”

Well, the skeptic in me doesn’t really trust those Emmy nominations and the “politics” that seem to go into them. (Kind of like the Oscars at times, you know?) I’ve found that some of their nominees from years’ past haven’t made much sense. Some get passed up over others for whatever reason, and you can’t make heads or tails of it - no matter how logical you try to be about it.
With that in mind, it doesn’t surprise me that the Emmys tend to overlook “smaller” actors, like Michael Urie and Becki Newton. I just hope that others in the UB cast (aside from America and Vanessa) won’t continue to get passed over in the future, but well - considering that this is the Emmys, that move wouldn’t really surprise me either.
If I had to choose, I’d rather watch the Golden Globes instead of the Emmys. At least they tend to be more fair.
