Photos of a Slightly More Fashionable Ugly Betty

July 10, 2008 by Tom

Filming of Ugly Betty in NYC is fast and furious, and the photos keep rolling in.

A common theme in the comments about the previous photos of America Ferrera / Betty is that her outfit was horrible, almost clown-like. Some regretted that it looked like Betty was “reverting”, and Ugly Betty News commenter jw took a slightly different angle (and held nothing back):

Nooooooooo!!! Bring back Eduardo, STAT!! As someone who is in the fashion industry I can say for certain that the outfit Betty is wearing these photos is TOO STYLISH! Come on Pat, Betty looks like a Harajuku Girl here. Everything that she has on looks DESIGNER. I respected Eduardo Castro’s vision and even remember reading that he felt “Betty was a hard character to dress” because her character is so multifaceted. Wish he could’ve made the “jump” to NYC!

Now, I’m not ready to fire Patricia Field before a single episode airs, but from my layman’s point of view, I agree with jw. The outfit on the motorcycle didn’t look like something Betty would wear. However, this outfit does:

Now, actually, once again, it might be a little TOO stylish (the pretty floral, the butterfly belt), but I don’t know about the socks. Anyway, that color looks very good on Betty.

On a side note, this is the second scene Ferrera has filmed without her trademark “B” necklace. The southwestern looking necklace makes me wonder about what is happening between Betty and Henry. Or maybe it has nothing to do with Henry/Gio at all.

It’s also good to see Christina / Ashley Jensen. I don’t know if this is supposed to be a before or after baby delivery scene, but I did the math last year, and Christina should have Wilhemina’s baby during…November sweeps! (Funny how that worked out :) ) My guess is that Christina is supposed to be pregnant here.

Anyway, more pics of this scene after the jump!

  1. We’ve been discussing these photos over at the MGSG forum–it looks as though Betty has apartment listings in her hand! Could they be apartment hunting for Betty (some photo captions have already alluded as much)?

Also, I’m thinking maybe she went to the Grand Canyon, and maybe picked up the necklace there (seems Southwestern in style) in memory of her mother… It looks like a silver and turquoise dove to me.

Thanks for more pics Tom! I’ve noticed the “B” has been missing too. hhmm..

  3. iamthecee says:

Hey, in The Other Boelyn Girl, the king’s name was Henry. The “B” chain belonged to his true love, one of his wives. Betty’s “B” is gone. :-D Which means Henry is dunzo, lol (well at least that’s what I think :)

  4. Hysteria259 says:

I think this outfit looks as though Betty has picked up on what is stylish, but of course put her own Bettyish spin on it. If she lost the socks, it wouldn’t be half bad.

  5. Jessica King says:

I like Betty dress. Finally look at Christina’s pregant with Betty. The color look good for Betty.

  6. Eric says:

I think the wardrobe makes sense. After 2 years at Mode, you would think at least some fashion sense would rub off. Even subconsciously. But this seems Betty-version of stylish, which is still pretty loud and clashy. I do wonder what’s up with that necklace though…

  7. Bennu says:

I love this outfit; it really works on her. I think Eric’s comment above pretty much summed it up: it’s the “Betty-version of stylish.” Definitely looks like she picked up some fashion tips from MODE and put them to use in her own quirky way.

However, I *hated* the outfit from the fair scene. The items individually were too trendy for Betty, and put together like that she looked like a crazy five-year-old who had run amok into a designer store. Ewww…

I dont understand why she is wearing heels in these photos and the motorcycle red carpet ones..ya i kinda with Eduardo was back but Pat did an amazing job on the pilot so I have faith in her.

  9. Okay… So after much discussion at MGSG’s forums, one of our eagle-eyed Gettys with a freakish memory (lol!) came up with theory that Daniel may be working for PLAYER magazine which was mentioned in Grin and Bear It as a Meade publication.

Makes sense with all that’s going on in the 7/8/08 photos and explains the letters on the capes the models are wearing and the P on the banners… Here’s a clip from that episode that mentions the mag—

That paired with Betty possible apartment hunting already has me anxiously awaiting the premiere of season 3–I think we’re going to be seeing a stronger, more confident Betty!

  10. Okay, yeah… It’s PLAYER magazine. You can see it on one of the banners in this photo series– http://gothamist.com/2008/07/08/ugly_betty_1.php?gallery6937Pic=2#gallery

It’s gonna be an interesting season, then! :D

  11. Tomatish says:

And the evidence is found by another eagle-eyed Getty from MGSG (a 3rd one won’t hurt anybody, right stu ;p)

Here it is on the banner to the left it definitely says Player:

  12. LOL – well, at least I don’t feel so alone anymore. :P I thought I was the only one who thought that Betty was getting a little too stylish too soon. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve always expected that Betty would undergo some changes with time, and I definitely welcome it. After all, change is a natural part of growing up. But in regards to Betty’s physical appearance, I liked the “conservative”, gradual approach that Eduardo took in making those changes happen, as was seen last season. Her look in Season 2 was colorful, quirky, yet subtle in change – which, to me, matches well with Betty’s sensible personality. But Patricia Field’s costumes seem more obvious – like they’re screaming out to you (which I suppose worked well on SATC).

As I mentioned over at the B&B comm, I definitely love the colors and I certainly like the flowery dress, but I guess I was expecting for Betty to hold off a little while longer on being more “stylish”. Naturally, I don’t want to see Betty change too fast too soon, especially since we’re only coming upon the third season. But hey – I still see the red glasses and braces, so to me, that’s a good sign at this point in time. LOL.

  13. Gabby says:

i’m not crazy about Betty’s wardrobe, either.
but i am LOVING Christina’s outfit here :)
this is going to be the best season to come!!!!

  14. SirLizard says:

I know that there are people who don’t want Betty to change at all, and I can understand why, but it is extremely unlikely that after working at MODE for a few years that she wouldn’t pick up some fashion and beauty tips, just as it is unlikely that she’d have braces on her teeth forever.
