Henry or Gio Spoiler: “Ugly Betty’s Moving, I’m Not”

June 7, 2008 by Tom

Ugly Betty Henry Gio

It would appear that at least one piece of the Ugly Betty love triangle is settled. One of the actors who plays one of Betty’s star-crossed lovers Henry and Gio, has told TV Guide that he won’t be moving to New York:

“The show is moving, I am not,” he said at the SKYY Vodka screening for “Sex and the City” on May 29.

I’ll tell you which one in a minute, after a jump.

I wonder what this will mean for the show, considering the nastiness that happened in May in every corner of the Ugly Betty web universe. People chose sides, and drew some pretty hard lines. The Benry/Getty wars made the US presidential race look like a campfire rendition of Kum-ba-yah.

One side is going to be very disappointed (although I’m pretty sure Betty is going to be single when we catch up with her in September).

So, who isn’t moving to New York? Answer after the jump.

The person who said the above quote is Christopher Gorham.

I’m sorry, Benry fans. Certainly you knew this was coming, but I know the finality is still a shock. I’ll make a prediction, though: we haven’t seen the end of Henry. Something tells me he’ll pop up once or twice in season 3.

So, tell me what you think of this huge development. And y’all be nice. We still all love Ugly Betty, right?

I am thrilled! That was my personal fave option: kick Henry, go Gio! Hopefully Mr. Rodriguez gets a full signed contract now!

  2. karen says:

I am totally bumming right now!!! Hi is one of the main reasons I watch! He was so lovable and one of the “normal” characters on the show. I sure hope that maybe he gets a show of his own, I will definately watch!!

  3. Chuck says:

Did somebody verify that Freddy R is moving to NYC? Does he already live there?

  4. OMG-UGLYBETTY says:

This is quite sad. Of course I’ll still watch the show, and hopefully it’ll get over this slump it’s been in…. but without Henry and (probably) with more Gio *twitch*, I’m not sure how I’ll like the show. But I guess I’ll try to stay POSITIVE!

  5. BD says:

This is the worst thing that could happen to the show!
After 2 LONG seasons of awkward moments, romantic and sexual tension, and all the trouble both characters went through, abc can just drop it that easily? NO! Just NO!
I mean, I always enjoyed watching teh other storylines and I was always interested in what is going on with the people around Betty. But the reason which I kept tuning in every week is becuase of what was there between the two, weither they were together or not. Seeing Betty have the love she has and finding someone who loves her for who she is no questions asked, and for him in return, it sends the message that you dont have to conform in anyway to get what you want and suceed in love. I know it has given me some more confidence in myself!
I don’t know how I am going to watch the show if Henry is not there. I mean I am not losing hope that there will be Henry in season 3, but just the way they left us off at the end, there better be Henry in season 3!
I am SO depressed right now!
Jack- as much as I see and respect your enthusiasm in your ship (as much as I show my enthusuasm in mine), I wouldnt respond the way you did if it was FR saying that.

  6. Ravleen says:

I’m happy, I was sick of Henry..I hope, even if Betty stays single, Gio stays and they develop his character as a regular before any romance.

  7. Emilia says:

This news should make me ecstatic, but for some reason it doesn’t. I really liked CG on the show, even if his character has irritated me over the last few episodes. Saying that, he could still be on the show, but it would involve a lot of traveling and I don’t think he will want that. If this is the case, I hope to see him do well in other projects outside of UB– he’s a good actor, and from what I’ve seen, a great guy. :)

On a brighter note (for some), this looks good for Getty! Providing, that is, that FR can return. I have been wanting Gio and Betty to happen since ‘Betty’s Wait Problem’, and things are starting to look up! :D

  8. Jessica King says:

Thank for the info.I think and guess maybe Betty chose Gio,if I’m wrong.I think she probley be single for now,but wait until 3 season for find out.

  9. Emilia says:

BD, I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. FR doesn’t live in NY either (I think he lives in LA actually…) and he has a family too which means he probably won’t be in a hurry to move there. So either none of them are returning for S3 or they will have to fly to the set for filming.

So, I hope that makes you feel a little better. I know how much you love your adorkable accountant, just as I love my sandwich guy. :)

  10. Randi says:

I think this is great news, too. I’m sure Gorham is a good guy and I’m not celebrating a gifted actor losing his job (assuming he doesn’t pop back up in a recurring way at some point in the season), but the reality is that they have a story to tell us here and they need to make choices. Betty is the center of that story, and she needs to evolve. Always a little dull, Henry became a buzzkill who hindered her evolution. Gio is the more dynamic character, and their love story — assuming they develop one — will be the more interesting and unpredictable one. Just my opinion.

As for contracts, etc., Silvio Horta strongly implied that everyone they wanted for the regular cast next season would be making the move. That leads me to think that FR is locked in, either as full-time or as nearly full-time (like this year). Actors commute all the time, and this is a really good role on a prestige show opposite the most acclaimed young actress on television. Methinks he’ll take it :)

  11. Tomatish says:

Well, Henry has this thing with popping up again when we expect him to be gone, so i guess he’ll be there for some episodes, but hopefully on a different storyline. (Many think Henry/Amanda half siblings story would be good. I don’t know?)

I’m happy for the news, being a Getty fan, but I’m still worried. FR is starting on his “Bodega dreams” project (I’m very happy for him), but I hope he doesn’t give UB’s Gio up.

  12. Charlotte says:

In a way, it’s quite sad we wont be seeing Henry again. I did like him as a character. But i felt the whole Betty/Charlie/Henry storyline was dragged out for far too long. So i’m quite glad it’s over, and hopefully Getty will happen someday!

  13. Michelle says:

Well Freddy technically isn’t even a ‘cast member’, he’s still considered reoccuring, right?
If Betty really does choose herself over the guys, like we thought, I don’t think they would need Freddy or Chris for the first few episodes anyway, since they should be in Rome/Tucson.
Also note, just because the show is moving doesn’t mean he has to, he could comute….I don’t think he would just reveal such a huge storyline point in an interview IMO.

But anyway, if this is true, I am extremely disappointed. Henry is my favorite character on the show, whether he’s with Betty or not.

  14. Bryce says:

YESSSS!!!!!! I hated the whole Benry thing, it was tearing Betty apart him coming and going like that. A Long distance relationship will never work.

  15. Elizabeth says:

I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Henry not be in the first part of the season (I think it is clear Betty chose herself and neither of the guys in the finale, and good for her). I’m not sure how to take this quote. It could mean that CG is not moving to NYC but commuting (as VW used to do from NYC to LA). However, I don’t want to be Pollyanna about this…so I’ve got to say I’m disappointed if CG is no longer a cast regular. Henry is one of my favorite characters. He adds a sweetness to the show–he’s funny, he’s adventurous, and I personally think he brings out the best in Betty. I was hoping the writers could write a happy ending for him and Betty *eventually* and get rid of these dang triangles even sooner than that. I think Henry has a lot to offer the show regardless of the shipping stuff, so I’m very disappointed.

To be honest, I’m not sure if my adoration of other characters like Marc is enough to keep me coming back. If Henry is gone–well, I might just be gone, because the message it sends is the good guy loses. And that’s not why I watch the show.

  16. Jace says:

Well, I was never big on the Henry/Betty storyline (I’m still not, actually), so it doesn’t kill me to see him go. Sorry.

Let’s face it – Henry’s time as Betty’s boyfriend has really run its course on this show. The Henry fans were really given a gift. Christopher Gorham was only meant to be on the show for 3 episodes – a short story arc – but the writers decided to go further with it for a while. (Still, regardless of the length of the storyline, I do believe the writers had a good idea of how far they wanted to take this thing with Henry/Betty before closing it off.)

As for the Henry/Amanda sibling story, I don’t think that could ever happen. (Personally, I’m one of those who’s rooting more for a Henry/
Amanda hookup – and I know there are others who love this idea as well – but I don’t see that happening either.) The truth is, if Henry stays on this show, any storyline he has would have to inevitably tie back to Betty somehow. And I don’t see how they could do that WITHOUT him being a love interest for Betty. They could never be “just friends” – there’s just too much history there. So, the bottom line is that it’s his time to go.

Frankly, I think it’s sad that folks would stop watching the show just because Henry isn’t there. After all, the original premise of this show is about Betty’s life and where it takes her, not where it takes her and Henry.

A friend of mine who just looked over my shoulder and saw this story (and isn’t a regular UB watcher) summed it up best: “I thought the show is called ‘Ugly Betty’, not ‘Ugly Henry’.”

    Quite true.

  17. Anne says:

I was a Henry person in the beginning but grew to love the dynamic tension between Betty and Gio. I love FR. I am keeping my guard as to whether or not he’ll be back though…as many have said…he is an LA guy and is working on a lot of other projects. I will miss CG but Henry wasn’t driving Betty’s character anywhere…it was time to put an end to the triangle.

  18. Krista says:

Yea! I love the whole Betty/Gio relationship and cannot wait to (hopefully-fingers crossed) see it evolve next season.

I never really got into the whole Hetty thing, and it wasn’t until I caught an episode featuring Gio’s character that I really became addicted- the chemistry between the two was unmistakable! Now let’s hope that FR is going to there in full force for S3 and I’ll dance for joy!

  19. Niobe says:

I’ll be kind of sad to see Gorham go…if he’s actually leaving. He only said he wouldn’t be moving to New York. To me that in no way implies he won’t be on the show at least a few times. It just means he doesn’t want to pack up his family’s entire life and move them to a much differant city. As other have mentioned, I have doubts Freddy will be moving there as well.

“Bodega Dreams” takes place in New York though, so if Freddy is planning to be on the show he wouldn’t have to move commute too much in between jobs.

  20. Marin says:

You know who I’m mad at? The writers. I’d be okay with no more Henry in a different situation, but frankly, his plot in season two was one big mess!

Personally I was drawn into UB becuse of they Henry/Betty storyline. And after waiting for the rest of season one for some kind of payoff for their relationship, there was none. There was just akward, awful relationship that only got worse, yup that’s what season two was. All my anticipation, all the buildup, for no payoff, and that ticks me off. Its like they think we can’t have some happiness for Benry fans for just one moment, nope. Instead we got that awful pregnancy storyline (seriously would’ve it been that hard to make the baby not his? You got a ton of chances…) and all kinds of Gio buildup, and for me,personally, Getty would be like me dating my older brother.

So I hope you Getty fans see some payoff for all you hopes of a relationship, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I’m betting that either we’ll see a Betty all by herself or someone new coming along. Because I doubt that relationship happiness is in the picture for Betty.

Anyways, this doesn’t stop me from watching UB, because I think the rest of what’s going on is fab., but I’ll look forward to new CG projects as well. And while I have season 1 on dvd, I’m not getting season 2…. I hope they can win me back in season 3.

So thanks for reading my mini-rant. That’s been building up in me since the season finale…

    ——————————————
But the Benry fans did have their moment in the sun – starting with “A League of Their Own”. That’s when Henry and Betty decided to go for it and date, despite the fact that it was a bad idea to begin with. Their short time as a couple may not have been without its bumps, but they did share sweet, happy moments together when they had the chance.

In general, you can’t completely expect that Betty will have a relationship WITHOUT bumps. (Even her new, fledgling romance with Gio isn’t without its problems. Hey – even her friendship with Daniel has it’s ups and downs.) It’s just not realistic for those things not to happen.

If there’s anything that I’m upset about in regards to a character, it’s how the writers are killing ALEXIS’ CHARACTER. With her, it’s so obvious that they aren’t even trying to make things work with her. To me, the Season Two Henry storyline seemed plausible and expected. (As Jace pointed out, Henry was never meant to be on the show for so long, so I knew that they were eventually going to get rid of him at some point.) As for the baby storyline? He lived with Charlie for a while, so the pregnancy thing isn’t out in left field at all. But with Alexis, it seems like the writers decided to give up and do whatever came to mind – make her nice one second and then evil the next. It’s almost as if she’s bipolar! To me, it’s more of a pity that she’s going to be gone. I’m sure that if they kept Alexis on, they could have found a way to make her individual storyline tie back to Betty…but they just gave up at the end.

Still, I’m not giving up on UB. No matter what, there’s still so much to look forward to. And I’m dying to see Betty’s story through to the end. She’s the reason that I started watching this show back in 2006, so for me, the message hasn’t been lost. After all, this show is about her, first and foremost.

  22. Elizabeth says:

Of course the show is the “Ugly Betty” show, not the “Henry” show–and that’s mainly why I’m upset. I’m upset for Betty. I’m angry that Betty has to go through two seasons of this for someone she truly loves, all that build up that Henry is the one (and I know some people disagree, but I think when they extended his character that is what the writers intended), and yet in the end it is all for nothing. If Christopher Gorham leaves as a cast regular all the effort Betty put into that relationship was for nothing, *and* all the effort Henry fans put into caring about Henry is for nothing. In the end, it seems to me both of the characters are being forced to settle for second best. For me, the message of the show is primarily about Betty realizing her career dreams, but those dreams have always been paralleled with her personal dreams as well. If she gives up on hope about dreaming about true love, how can I trust she won’t give up hope that she can become a magazine editor? Betty’s message for all the characters is to follow your dreams–they may not be perfect in real life, but you can still realize them and they are worth striving for. Even regardless of who a person ships, I want all of the good characters to realize their dreams. The message I get from abandoning Henry entirely is this: the good guy loses and gets kicked to the curb. Become more like Wilhemina at her worst if you want to win in the end.

There are people that are in important to Betty’s life that I think would ruin the show if they leave. For me, these people include her family, Daniel, and Henry. I also think the show would also be ruined if the contrasts of the Amanda, Wilhemina, and Marc crowd left. That isn’t to say other characters are great–I adore both Christina and Claire, they are some of my favorites, and other recurring characters like Kenny, Cliff, Suzuki St. Pierre are outstanding–but for me there is a core cast that makes the show special and makes Betty who she is through her interactions with them.

I think Henry gets along well and works well with the rest of the cast. He is one of the few characters unafraid of Wilhemina and willing to stand up to her. He is supportive of Daniel and there when both Daniel, Betty, and MODE needed him. He’s hilarious with Kenny. He’s close friends with Christina since last season. I loved his few scenes with Hilda and Justin this season. I think he has a lot of story outside of the romance with Betty and taking him out of the show at this point is a waste.

I expected Henry’s involvement this next season to be minimized, perhaps more like it was in “Burning Questions” or last season’s brilliant “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” I expected him to be there, though. The more I think about this, the more I realize how much of a betrayal this is. Seriously, for me this is the same as if they announced Michael Urie or Ana Ortiz was being axed. It’s not just the relationship. It’s the importance of the character to the show.

  23. Angelica says:

OMG…my sandwich guy is staying on the show? AHHHHH YAH!!!!!!!!
    lmao
well even if she does end up single, it’s cool. Just as long as Gio’s a regular or something.

But then what if it turns out that the baby really isnt Henry’s? Stuff like that happens all the time! ARGH…im like so…….axious to see the next season. I just got into UB in the past month..and I’ve been like obsessing over Getty since I started watching lol.
    oh well..we’ll see. :D

  24. Sarah (stuley23) says:

“If Christopher Gorham leaves as a cast regular all the effort Betty put into that relationship was for nothing, *and* all the effort Henry fans put into caring about Henry is for nothing.”

I don’t agree with this statement at all. The point of the Ugly Betty storyline is Betty’s personal growth.

Romantic relationships don’t always work out, but you learn and grow from them. We’ve only seen Betty in two serious romantic relationships so far–Walter and Henry. Both have run their course and it’s time for her to pick herself up, dust herself off, move on and continue to grow.

And just because she loved Henry, doesn’t necessarily mean that he is her “true” love or the person she’s destined to be with in the end. And as much as I loved Henry end of S1, I never saw him as being set up to be Betty’s endgame relationship. I think the whole purpose in being further written into the show was to show Betty it was okay to want more out of her relationship romantically. And now it’s time for her to learn that it’s also okay to be a little selfish in a relationship, too–your romantic desires are *just* *as* *important* as your partner’s. It’s not always about only making the other person happy, which is what we’ve seen Betty do for Henry in S2. Despite whatever it was she may have wanted to do, she usually relented to what woud make him comfortable or happy.

And heck, for all we know the creators may not even see Gio *OR* Daniel as the relationship we see her with in the end. This show isn’t about the ships at all–it’s about watching Betty grow and mature. And I for one can’t wait to see her land on her feet again in Season 3!

  25. Livia says:

Happy that Henry isn’t getting to keep Betty, NOT happy that he’s off the show. I think Henry and Betty were important to each other’s growing and maturing, that sweet first love (I don’t count Walter, whom I don’t think Betty ever really loved). But for the grown-up, increasingly assured and adventurous Betty, Gio’s a better fit. I certainly think (and hope) they’ll have problems (else, where’s the story, where’s the journey?) but I hope they’ll turn out to be the love of each other’s life. That said, I do hope we’ll get a closure scene between Betty and Henry, that we’ll get to see their breakup, not just hear that it happened offstage. I’m one of those who always wanted to see a Henry-Amanda match-up, but I don’t see how they’d manage that now; the writers seem to have written him into a corner with the baby-mama story. So, in short, Henry losing Betty = GOOD, Henry off the show = BAD.

  26. karen says:

I’m late to chime in because I live overseas and just saw the season finale tonight. I’m Team Gio so I say YEAAA!!! I liked Henry, but I found him tiring. And he didn’t work hard enough for Betty’s sake letting baby momma manipulate him recently. It is time for beloved Betty to move on! And Gio is plain adorable.

  27. Jesse Mulldoon says:

I wish BOTH Gio and Henry would go. I wish they would finally remove Betty’s braces (what an event that would be. Ratings will soar!) Let her get a makeover and look like she does at the awards shows. She could walk into work and have everyone stunned and then Daniel and she should finally get together until she decides to dump him for Alex.

I used to LOVE this show. Now I can’t stand it.
Good for you CHRIS G if you chose to stay in CA for your family. You are way too good of an actor to be demeaned by this tacky role. You rocked in Jake 2.0, Odyssey 5 and should have won awards for “The Other Side of Heaven”. I suspect you have lots of offers. This show is on the way out, and I hope to see adorable America do more movies. She is brilliant.

Freddy and Henry are both toooo old for Betty.
If she finds a new, 20-something boyfriend, rather than the 30-something married daddies they now chose for her, maybe there is a chance the show will improve.

  28. Niobe says:

“Freddy and Henry are both toooo old for Betty.
If she finds a new, 20-something boyfriend, rather than the 30-something married daddies they now chose for her, maybe there is a chance the show will improve.”

Freddy and Christopher are 30-something married daddies. Gio and Henry are 20 something single men, so I guess I didn’t see much of a problem, unless you mean if they hire and actor with less responsibilities these sudden changes won’t affect the show that much.

  29. Jesse Mulldoon says:

I mean that the actors don’t come across as 20-something. I think both C and F are ten years older in real life than America (23?), and it shows on the show. No biggie. I’m still sick of this show. Guess I missed some if Henry and Amanda are 1/2 something or other. Marc steals the show. How bout a spin-off? I think F and C are very good actors but it is time to play thirty year olds guys.

  30. Niobe says:

I guess I didn’t think they came across as that much older. I thought Gorham was in his twenties until I looked him up and Freddy use to (and often still does) get a lot of funny comments because of his baby face. And America/Betty are often pretty mature in my opinion, so I guess it all evened out for me. But it’s all about perception, I guess. I come from the 90210 days where you had people pushing 30 playing teenagers, so maybe my perception is clouded! LOL!

  31. Jesse Mulldoon says:

Wow! Maybe I’m psychic! Since I left the above comments a few weeks ago I’ve found out:

Chris Gorham will star in his OWN show on CBS in Jan.09, It is sort of a combo of ‘10 little indians’ and
‘twin peaks’. OH YES!!!! Best of everything good for you and yours and the new show, Chris.

American’s sequel to the ‘traveling pants’ movie is released. OH YES!!!

  32. Jesse Mulldoon says:

Some new, younger dude will be Betty’s new love interest. I’ll watch now.

  33. kathrynnelouise says:

im SO happy about gio. hes so sweet and genuine. henry, to be honest, kinda bugs me. hes too nervous. and geeky. gios … smooth? hahah. i love his personality. and his hair before he shaved it… anyway, yay getty!!

  34. LL says:

henry is SOO HOT…iwould go for him than Gio

  35. Maritza says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! gio is a bum at least henry has got a future and the show would be more interesting what a week in rome with henry rome would be forever and with gio for never he’s intolerable and short and fat damn you ugly betty writers i liked u better on the strike!

after al she been through with him SHE TRAVELLED TO MEXICO AND HAD DELUSION AND WHAT SHE HAD A BAD SANDWICH WITH GIO BRING BACK WALTER TO MURDER GIO AND HER DAD YAAAY! gio must leave betty alone

  36. Beatrice B says:

Gio is a bum? he’s an enterpreneur with dreams and he makes it happen. Just like Betty, he comes from Queens. Just like Betty he has dreams of his own and he actually makes it happen. He started as an employee of Mode in less than a year he put his own Deli Shop… he’s aiming to build “Gio’s Sandwich Depot” in the next five years. Just like Betty wants to own her own magazine.

So far Henry is only an accountant. Nothing wrong with that. That’s the eternal dilema of who makes more money… someone that has a business or someone that keeps a salary job. Well I am in the latter group. I am a professional… but most my rich friends are in the first group.
Hard to choose… I’d choose Gio over Henry for many other reasons than money. Henry is not rich. He had to find creative ways to collect money for Charlie’s pregnancy. If i wanted money I would go for Matt Hartley… his mommy and daddy can provide for enough Moola to last a lifetime.

“He’s Short and Fat”… that makes Betty…. what?

    I can’t argue against this argument. :)

But hey I’ll never stop saying: BRING BACK GIO. He was funny, He was passion and he was romance. His love for Betty, teaches viewers how a healthy relationship is supposed to be based on dreams, determination, unconditional love and passion. He’s a friend and a lover. He makes her cry and he makes her laugh. I definitely miss him and he should be back in season 4. With a longer hair, of course.
