Poll: Who Did Betty Choose?

by Tom on May 26th, 2008

Ugly Betty episode 2.18 (Jump) ended with a much anticipated cliffhanger about Betty’s love life. Silvio Horta, the lone writer for this episode, tried to leave us asking the question, “Did she choose to marry Henry? Did she go to Rome with Gio? Or did she do something entirely different?”

Ugly Betty Softball

My opinion? I don’t think Betty went to Rome or Tucson. I believe the plane that they showed at the very end of the episode was a ruse. I think Betty left home to get her own place. This is based on several interviews with America Ferrera and Silvio Horta about Betty’s future. She’s going to “evolve” - and I believe that instead of Betty becoming more pretty and fashion-conscious (which would be suicide for the show), I think she’s going to become more independent.

If this does happen, I’d imagine she’ll still spend a great amount of time at the Suarez house, because there has been no indication that I can remember that Betty knows how to cook. This gives Ignacio something to do, besides arguing with Hilda over her seeing a married man.

So what do you think: who did Betty choose? Not who you WANTED her to choose (I think everyone’s been pretty clear on that :) ), but what do you think we’ll discover in the fall? Also, let me know what you think of this (most were quite upset at the idea of Betty NOT ending up with one of the two men). Also, it’ll be a long summer - I’ll wait to discuss which one is going to be back next season. But, what do you think Betty did?

I love Henry, but I definately think she chose herself in this situation.

As much as I’d love her to choose Henry, yeah, I think she probably chose herself. For now, of course.

I hated to think that she might not have chosen Gio in the start, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense in my head. I mean, after that messy situation, there is no way they can spend a delightful summer without any awkwardness (seeing how much Gio was hurt and Betty was confused because of Henry’s proposal). Being away from each other for a while would help them start without all the Henry confusion. I think it would also be a good idea if Gio tried to back off a bit even when he comes home from Rome so that Betty can actually realize her real feelings towards him and be more initiative about it, because so far she has been quite passive about their relationship.

So now I believe and wish that she didn’t choose any of the guys, but I have no idea where she left. No matter where it is, the writers had better surprise us, because the finale was way too predictable.

But Tom, I have to disagree with your prediction, because there was also a cab waiting for Betty. At least, I hope it is not true, because everyone (including me) has been asking for more Suarez interaction.

Ok, I’m done babbling away now.

Oh, I’d so love for her to have chosen Gio (Freddy Rodriguez was such an excellent addition to the UB cast), but I’m a realist–she most likely chose herself.

I dont think so Betty went to Rome or Tucson.Cuz she did not wear engaged ring from Henry.Gio-dont know, but wait and see what happen to next season.I think Betty probley chose herself for anywhere she go to.

It’s pretty clear to me that she chose Bow Wow. You remember how it was in the elevator. And Betty dropped the not-so-subtle double entendre when she addressed him as “Mr. Wow.” Plus, he “likes ‘em freaky.” I think we can all see where this is going.

I’m SO SO SO dying for her to end up with Gio, but I have to agree with Tomatish here. Its not a good way to start/conduct a relationship after all that craziness, and I think (hope) she realizes that! She’s in limbo now- kind of starting to get over Henry and also starting to give into her attraction to Gio, but likely too doubtful about either at this point to definitively choose. By the same token, the guys have much more to worry about in each other as well- there is no defined boundary anymore as to who Betty is ‘with’. Any choice she makes between the two will destroy her relationship with the other, and I don’t think she’s ready for that. They both need to back off and let her find herself, and find her way back to him (whomever that may be).

I really wanted her to choose Geo but I’m pretty sure she picked herself in this case.

She chose herself, and more power to her! (I do think she went on a vacation, though, and didn’t move out from the house entirely.) I think this is great, that she is realizing she can have adventures on her own and doesn’t have to be with a guy to see the world. I personally think Gio is mostly over, or will be over early next season…and Henry will end up back in NYC eventually next season like he did this last season. Only the difference will be, this time the focus will be on Betty, not on the will they/won’t they shipping stuff…which is as it should be. (And I’m the biggest H/B shipper ever, but I believe this is right).

I think her choosing Henry would be an incredibly bad decision. And as much as I love Gio, I wasn’t thrilled about them running off to Rome together so soon. So I hope she choose herself for the time being.

Maybe it will help her break out of her shell of “I need to help everyone with everything” and she can focus on herself and her writing.

Oh, I meant to add that I kind of like Tom’s prediction of Betty getting her own place. I think that would be good for her and it will help her grow. At times I felt Betty’s family was too dependant on her being around, and I think it will help Ignacio realize Betty is more of an adult.

I want to see a more independent Betty!

  • Jessica

Kudos to a more independent Betty- I’d love to see her hoof it on her own! I honestly don’t think Gio is going anywhere soon- he seems like a crazy effective ratings draw (I know I love him!). He does need to slow it down though- while a month-long trip to Rome does indeed seem like the stuff dreams are made of, being too eager won’t get anyone anywhere.

Well, we know she didn’t choose Henry, because there was so obviously no ring on her finger, so I’d like to think that she went to Rome. Hilda wasn’t there to say goodbye, and if Betty was moving to Tuscon, Hilda would have been there. Since Betty’s going for a month, maybe Hilda said goodbye before heading off to hunky Eddie Cibrian. :)

But, the plane being a ruse? I don’t think so. The plane was flying to the right, and to the right of New York is Rome, so…then again, so is Paris, and the rest of Europe. So, who knows. Daniel told Betty to take a vacation. Maybe she did go somewhere.

And as for the whole Ignacios yelling at Hilda for being with a married man - remember that Mrs. Suarez was originally married to someone else and Ignacios was her cook!

Betty goes off on her own (Mexico to see grandma, perhaps), Gio goes to Rome and comes back with another girl that he met in his travels (not really a girlfriend, though he lets Betty believe Gio is with the girl so that she will get jealous and realize that she wants to be with Gio), Henry goes to Tucson…for now (until we learn that the baby is not really his — this is a tella novella, after all).

  • Tomatish

Gio brings a girl all the way from Italy to make Betty jealous? What do you think he is? Even Daniel wouldn’t do that?

  • Jessica
    May 29, 2008 at 10:37 am

I could see Betty going on vacation somewhere and meeting a new guy before I could see Gio bringing a new girl home just to make her jealous. There is always the possibility that while she is gone, Kimberly (Lindsey Lohan’s new character) moves in on him and Betty has to contend with that when she gets back…it seems like there would be no point in bringing her on the show just to be nice to Betty after the way she treated her in H.S. Just her presence would be threatening to Betty and dredge up all those insecurities all over again.

  • Angie
    May 29, 2008 at 10:50 am

No, Gio doesn’t bring someone back just to make Betty jealous. He runs into a New York girl who has been studying at a culinary school in Rome, and who is returning to New York. He genuinely likes the girl, he just doesn’t love her like he loves Betty. He isn’t trying to make Betty jealous, that is just what happens when she sees Gio and the girl laughing and having a good time sharing memories about Rome. This prompts Betty to feel jealousy, and to realize what she might be missing with Gio. Then we get to see Betty crushing on Gio for awhile (a little role reversal). Ms. Lohan as the foodie returning to New York with Gio–that would be an interesting development.

Thats an interesting and very possible scenario…it would be cool to see a little role reversal : )

    May 29, 2008 at 11:55 am

I know it’s all for the sake of drama, but I’d rather Betty just focus a little more on other aspects of her life rather than to be thrown into yet another emotional love triangle type situation where we’re watching characters go back and forth on their emotions, ALMOST getting together only to have someone or something serve as a complication to get between them. But again, I guess I wrote the third season people would think it was boring! :)

  • Jessica
    May 29, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Betty definitely needs to focus on other aspects of her life, I agree. Maybe I’m just overanxious to see her get with Gio because I love him so much, but I feel like he’s the kind of guy she can be with and still focus on those aspects and he won’t hold her back. I dunno why but he seems more…liberating…than Henry.

I think she either chose Gio or herself. I really wanted her to choose Gio but choosing herself is ok with me too as long as we still get to see Gio next season.

I like some of your ideas about what is going to happen if Betty goes on her own trip and sees Gio after he comes back from Rome. I had been thinking something similar about him being with another girl and Betty getting crazy jealous. It would kind of be nice to see a little role reversal after all the time we spent watching Gio pine over Betty.

    May 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Well, they shouldn’t jump into the drama so quick, nothing will be left for the rest of the season.
We don’t know much about Betty’s job situation, but I think the first episode should be almost Gio-free, then Gio would come up to mode (or hotflash) and see her having a good time with the others or busy working and then he just goes back to his delli deciding to back off a bit.
If any other girl has to be involved in it, it’d rather not exceed teasing and light flirtation. But no drama-packed triangles, please.

I think she is going to the Grand Canyon. They hint at it by saying that’s where her mother wanted to go.

I think you might be onto something there Fan, I wondered that myself after I re-watched the episode. It seems like a small insignificant detail the way they present it, but……..it makes a certain amount of sense that Betty would do it for her mother, so to speak.

Geo is PERFECT for Betty. He’s really nice and fun and likes for who she is. Plus, if Betty moves, will we ever find out if Daniel gets his job back? And what about the baby that woman is having? If Betty moves in with Henry and marries him, we’ll never know!!!

But I do think she chose herself, because no matter what we think, Ugly Betty isn’t choosing sides…But Geo is so dreamy and perfect for Betty… *sigh*

Why do you guys think Henry is better? He cheated on Betty and thought that he could get away with moving all the way to Tuscan. He broke Betty’s heart and then expected her to fall into his arms when he came and asked her to marry him on her doorstep! No affence, but Henry stinks.

  • Niobe
    Jun 6, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Henry never cheated on Betty. I don’t think they were technically an item when he made the bad decision to sleep with Charlie. And him moving to Tucson had nothing to do with him “getting away with it”, it was about him being near his child. Even I, and die-hard Getty fan can admit this

I am totally for Gio and Betty!!! I love them but I deffinitely have to say that Betty didn’t choose either one…the show wants to make you think…I am pretty sure after reading all the comments on here that Betty Chose herself and will eventually end up with Gio…that’s just my thoughts…I want them to end up together that’s for sure…I’m so tired of Henry he’s so blah now…and Gio is just the one for her..and he loves her so much if I were her I’d jump on him LOL ;)

I think Betty chooses herself. I just hope that they keep Gio as a recurring character because he’s such a great character for the show. And I see Gio as someone who is good for Betty and helps motivate her to follow her dreams. He’s the kind of guy that she should eventually end up with.
