Ugly Betty Video Message For Madonna Intrigue

May 21, 2008 by Tom

I’ve been trying to figure out what to make of this video ABC put on their site in the Ugly Betty page, where the character Betty Suarez asks Madonna for an autographed CD for Justin.

It doesn’t follow any current story line; it seemed to come out of left field, to use a softball term. That being said, I love how they made the video look homemade, and released it with no explaination. The way ABC did that kind of ventures into Lost territory.

Let me also add that America Ferrera is hilarious in the video. “No more jazz hands.” Heh.

It’s obvious,at least to me, that SOMEONE (ABC/Silvio Horta/Salma Hayek?) wants to float the idea that Ugly Betty is toying with a Madonna guest appearance. That’s not beyond the realm of possibility. Considering the show’s history, and Madonna’s love for publicity, I’d say it’s probable.

But, here’s my question: why release the video this week? If they are negotiating with Madonna for a cameo in the early part of season 3, why now? Do you think it’s because this is the week everyone is paying attention?

Or could we be dealing with some real cloak and dagger stuff? Maybe Madonna is going to be making a cameo this week, in the season finale tomorrow night? If so, how the heck do you keep something like that secret? Maybe arrange it while everyone is paying attention to Lindsay Lohan?

So, what do you make of this video? Do you have any theories?

It could be that they are leaving room open for a possible Madonna cameo in the future – if they are indeed lucky to snag her. (I can’t imagine how easy that would be at this point, to be honest.)

Interestingly, they’ve also been using Madonna’s song “Give It 2 Me” as background music for many of the season finale promos. So, you have to wonder…what’s with all of this pimpage? Is it just a cute way of promoting the season finale or is there really more to it?

    Time will tell, I guess.

I think it’s more to try and pump up sales of Hard Candy for Madonna than anything else. Using UB is just one way for them to hit their target demo and hard–esp. since ABC has to know all the Benries and Getties are stalking the video section of their UB site eager for any kind of info on their ships as the finale draws closer. It’s actually a pretty genious way to market the album, imo.

My best bet is that it’s going to be Mark (Justin)’s birthday soon, and America/rest of the cast are trying to get something for him that he would totally absolutley love!!!

Well I saw the finale tonight. I just hope she does what I guess she did. the third option besides the ones purposed to her…but that’s all I’m gonna say so I wont spoil anything. Madonna just came out with her latest CD so it’s probably a deal made to promote it…

Just seen Madonna Hard Candy Live show, I kid you not, during Get Into The Groove Madonna is prancing around in a blonde Ugly Betty Style wig and black glasses…… So whaddaya make of that? Check youtube – I saw the Manchester gig on 7th July 2009.

  1. [...] Speaking of next season, Hinkley makes absolutely NO reference to Madonna, nor does he hint about a previously unknown superstar cameo, so scratch my idea about a Madonna appearance this week. [...]
