Ugly Betty’s Amanda Just Can’t Buy A Break

April 23, 2008 by Tom

TV Guide’s Micheal Ausiello gives us hints about the Amanda/Gene Simmons story line, and if it goes where I think it’s going, Amanda will have more sadness in her life:

Question: May I have some Amanda-centric Ugly Betty scoop? — Kristi
Ausiello: Gene Simmons is back, and let’s just say life with daddy isn’t everything she hoped it would be.

I have two thoughts about this. The first is an empahtic: “ya think?” Gene Simmons isn’t exactly Bill Cosby in the whole husband and father department. I’m wondering if they are going to play this as Amanda finally getting tired of Simmons paying attention to groupies instead of her. Personally, I would have loved to see a feud between Amanda and Simmons’ two real-life children, but that would have meant more guest stars and more complications; that’s something Silvio Horta and the writers are trying to avoid.

Secondly, of all the characters in Ugly Betty, Amanda strikes me as the most sad – almost tragic. Yes, she mean and catty (especially to Betty), but it seems like she just can’t buy a break in life, especially in the love and family department. Her friendship with Marc is really all she has. This is why the chemistry between Becki Newton and Micheal Urie is so important.

Anyway, what do you make of Ausiello’s hints – where do you think the Gene Simmons story is going to go?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Gene pulls a “Well Amanda, it was sure good to meet you. Keep it touch.” [Here's my fan-mail address.]

  3. Elizabeth says:

I think either he will just not be interested in anything other than that one contact, or else she will find out he isn’t really her dad. Amanda really is a fragile character.

I hope that she will get back with her adoptive parents, since they were really the people who raised her. I think she’s putting too much stock in genetics.

  4. Bennu says:

Elizabeth, I also wondered why Amanda seems to have completely discounted her adoptive parents. I totally understand her desire to know who her biological parents were… but it does seem odd that she’s completely disconnected with her adoptive parents, considering they’re the *real* parents in her life. Fey and Gene just provided the chromosomes.

We don’t hear about her adoptive parents much, and they seemed very much like the hoity-toity country club set, so maybe they weren’t overly involved with her growing up either. That would explain a lot about why she’s clinging so desperately to the idea of Gene Simmons & Fey.

I hear you, Elizabeth and Bennu. Being an adoptive parent myself, I kind of cringed at the whole story line.

But the whole scene with the parents being swingers kind of buffered the whole thing. It’s hard not to think, “Well, no wonder…”
