There is a GREAT interview with America Ferrera in USA Today, in which she talks about her life the past few months, and the direction of the show. Apparently, it wasn’t just Silvio Horta who had been upset with the direction the show had been taking.
“I’ve always loved the show, but we went through some creative shifts,” says Ferrera. “Because so much was happening in each episode, there wasn’t enough time given to certain story arcs.”
I’ve felt this way for a while. I’m hoping that in season 3, now that Ugly Betty is pretty well established, the writers feel comfortable enough to spread the different story lines out – even skipping episodes. It looks like that’s actually going to start this year.
Silvio Horta says, “You’ll find there’ll be two or three story lines — the biggest one being Betty’s. And when we get into Marc, Amanda and Christina, there will be a little more interaction with Betty and her point of view.”
Bravo! Ferrera agrees. “I think the show’s journey is Betty’s journey. There’s a lot going on in these five episodes, but it’s very focused. An arc begins and kind of ends for Betty, specifically concerning her love life.”
Ahem. Just remember, fellow shippers: I’m just the messenger here.
But that quote from America sounds awful “final”, does it not? Benry folks, you might want to turn away before reading the next quote.
Ferrera describes Betty’s two-year romance with Henry as “the type of love that makes you sick.” Gio represents “the type of relationship where everything seems so easy…When Gio’s character got introduced, I found a whole other side of Betty,” she says. “He brings out the side of her that is the street-smart girl from Queens and dares her to be her most stripped-down, raw self.”
As for Henry: “They definitely have obstacles. And that’s definitely going to be confronted in these five episodes.” Horta refuses to reveal if both actors will be back next season).
Ferrera also talks about her looks, and how they’ve changed since the pilot episode of Ugly Betty. “My face looks different. My body looks different. I definitely feel like I’m growing up, which … means Betty will have to grow up, too.”
Apparently, Horta is accounting for these changes. He says, “There’ll maybe be a little something next season and down the line something more.”
There is much more in the interview, and an awesome video here. Check it out!

WOW! Great interview, I can’t wait for these next 5 episodes. I am very interested in maybe what physical changes they might make with Betty. Maybe they will deal with the braces, or maybe change her glasses up a bit. That would be a nice change. Very curious on the Henry/Gio thing. I also hope that maybe it is time for Betty to move out (part of the growing up thing)of dads house.
“The type of love that makes you sick”? I think that’s a little harsh. But hey, to each his/her own
i cant wait for the next episode!!!!!!!
:S!!!!
Cant wait see this episode on this thursday night.
OMG-UB, I think I know what’s she’s talking about, and it’s not as bad as you might think.
It’s that kind of love where you can’t eat, can’t sleep, can’t think straight. I could be wrong, but I think that’s what America meant.
Tom, I sure hope so. I got a bit worried like OMG-UB, but I thought I’d wait it out and see.
Not to leap onto a landmine here, but I don’t think that’s what America meant at all. If she meant that it was the kind of love that drives you happily, deliriously crazy, she would have said so.
She said it makes you sick. And that’s how she meant it. There’s no way to put a positive spin on “sick.” If it was a healthy relationship, Betty wouldn’t even have to decide between Gio and Henry; there wouldn’t be any doubt. But there is because the relationship is making both Henry and Betty sick.
Yes, they can make each other happy occasionally and they definitely want to make each other happy, but how much drama have we seen them go through in the past two years? Everything we’ve seen and heard suggests that they aren’t healthy and they shouldn’t be together right now.
I also think it is taken out of context and means lovesick…she cares so much about it it hurts when there are obstacles.
She might take a break and be single for awhile, but I’m not really concerned. The PR department is clearly trying to mislead right now with a lot of the things they are releasing and letting the actor say.
Well the article gave me mixed feelings.
Because by the way it is describes the whole “relationship” thing, it could go either way.
With Sandwich Boy- “easy” could be good and bad. Easy to start, easy to end. Maybe to Betty IF and I really say and stress IF it happens, I think it will be just a “whatever” type of relationship to Betty, and not even caring, as long as she is with someone who has an interst in her EVEN if she has no intrest in him (sorry Getty shippers).
With Henry- In the same intreview it is described as a “love that makes you sick.” again, that could go either way. The bad way i that it’s sickening and she just wants out (yeah right). I think its that kind of relationship that makes teh person so much in love its like an incurable disease and there is no way to make the love go away.
Now it is interenting to see which will not be in for next season. My worst case senario is that everyones favorite nerd is not there, but I firmly belive and think that he will be there, I can just feel it.
All I know is that Thursday is NOT coming fast enough and I want me some Betty NOW!
Is it thursday yet?
Love is not supposed to hurt. It’s not supposed to make you sick. Yes, every relationship goes through difficult times, but it’s unhealthy for a relationship to be painful.
Are they clearly trying to mislead the audience or are they telling the truth? My money’s on the latter, but we won’t know until we see it.
BD, I agree that the “easy” comment could go either way. I think it either means that her relationship with Henry is so difficult that it makes a relationship with Gio look so easy, OR it means that it’s too good to be true and Gio’s not the right guy for her.
But I just don’t think that “sick” has a good connotation at all, especially when it’s compared to the “expiration date” comment and other things we’ve heard and seen during the show.
I also disagree that it necessarily means that it makes her so sick that she wants out. A lot of the times, that’s not how an unhealthy relationship works. You can want to stay in a relationship that makes you sick. You can love that person desperately and not want to leave him–but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make you sick. And *I* think that’s what she’s referring to here.
wooster- That could be true too, but by the way that our dynamic duo acts around each other and stuff, it is hard for *me* to see that she wants out. She might be sick of thw whole “baby mama/daddy” drama (I know I am), and she might be sick at the fact that their time together is limited (”expiration date”), Maybe that is why she might want out.
Plus with the relationship, it was hard to get off the ground. Their timing was never right and when they finally did, it’s not as long as both of them probably want to be.
Now, I am going to stop before I go into a whole shipping rant, because its not the perfect thing to go on a shipping rant in, but Everyone is intitled to his or hers opinions. Lets just let the rest of the seasom play out as it may and hope for best (from either side lol).
*sings “One Day More”*
another thing about the hard to start:
Hard to start, hard to end.
I knew i forgot to end something!
;P
wooster- That could be true too, but by the way that our dynamic duo acts around each other and stuff, it is hard for *me* to see that she wants out.
…………………………
We’re agreeing here, BD. I meant that even if it is making her sick, which I agree with AF that is is, she doesn’t want to get out of the relationship. She loves Henry a lot and she doesn’t want it to end. A lot of relationships are like that. That was what I meant.
Horta said that we’ll start focusing on the guy Betty “should be with.” This suggests that she’s not with that guy right now. Now whether the “guy” is Gio or not, I don’t know. But if the guy is Gio, then I don’t think it will be that “easy” for her to let him go either. And I don’t think she’ll only pick him because she wants a “whatever” relationship–if he indeed is the “guy she should be with.”
Now if the relationship with Gio is too good to be true and she doesn’t have feelings for him, then she should definitely end that too. I’m not going to ship a couple until the last dog is dead. If I think they work as a couple, I’m going to be thrilled to watch it.
Mostly, I just want CG and FR to stay on the show.
Well more CG for me ;D
But I can see wher you’re coming from.
It’s just I don’t know if SB is the person she “should be with”. I understand why she MIGHT and i stress MIGHT choose him, but I just wont think it will be genuine and sincere liek he would be to her.
I just can’t see it thats all.
To each his own i guess *shrugs*
Is it Thursdsay yet?
We won’t know if Gio is the guy Betty should be with until we see her with him.
Whover the “guy” is, I think Betty is going to be sincere with him. Horta said that he’s the guy she “should” be with. If it’s that serious that she “should” be with him, then it would make sense that she’s serious about the guy–whoever he is.
whoa! I’m not gonna say a whole lot, except that i’m with BD.
thanks karen!
I agree with me too. lol
4 hours and counting!!!!!!
Well, I’m going to go ahead and say that I agree with Wooster. Completely. And that I look forward to see where they are planning on taking all of this. I’m very excited for the remaining episodes.
And we’ve only got 2 more hours! Woo-hoo!
everyone is entitled to ther opinion…
1 HOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love your countdowns, Angel! 42 minutes left!
Yes, I know that they are, BD. And I was saying that one was mine.
Regarding the article, does anyone else think the “little something” that’s going to change about Betty’s appearance will be that her braces are coming off? I hope so. A person only wears them for so long.
That would be cool if teh braces come off. Part of me feel attached cuz thats like Betty’s trademark, but it would seem right that feter having them for SOOO long, thet they should come off sooner or later.
44 minutes!!!!!
Well, I’ve heard the idea of a retainer taking the place of her braces, BD, and I like it. That way she still has the metal in her mouth that’s part of her trademark, but it’s also realistic. I think two years is about average for braces, but I could be wrong on that. I do think removing them would be a physical representation of how Betty is growing up. So taking them off works for me.
Wooster, I’m glad you enjoy the count down. I was afraid it was starting to get to be too much. But since it isn’t (and I’m glad because I like it too)… 35 minutes!!! Yay!
