Ausiello: No Detty For You!
Micheal Ausiello has a bit of news that will disappoint the Detty fans: there will be no romance between Betty and Daniel. Eric Mabius and America Ferrera simply won’t stand for it:
Mabius and Ferrera nixed the idea from the very beginning of the show. I guess I understand - such a relationship would be quite unrealistic. So, the two main romance possiblilities for the show look to be in extreme doubt. Since Betty already started drifting away from Gio in A Thousand Words By Friday, it’s obvious to me that Betty is going to get a new man in her life, eventually.
By the way, I love the little visual joke in the video. For those of you who can’t view it, Ausiello paired Henry and Daniel. Now THAT would be a storyline.

I don’t have any strong opinion for or against Daniel and Betty, but logically speaking, this video really doesn’t prove that a Detty romance won’t happen.
Why?
Well, for starters, Eric Mabius and America Ferrera are just actors. Sure, I bet the writers took their opinions into consideration before the show started, but the truth is that if the producing team is dead set on going with a certain storyline on this show - no matter what it is - they’ll do it and the actors have no choice but to play the part.
Besides, these rumors were prior to Season 1. The actors might have had a change of heart.
So, yeah - Daniel and Betty “shippers”? In my opinion, your favorite pair isn’t out of the running yet.

Well, at least I don’t have to worry about this couple for a season or 2 more. I don’t know why, but I don’t see them together… yet. I mean, Betty is like Daniel’s mom! She does everything for him.

Good point, Jace.
I remember something similar with one show where it was rumored that the two main leads disliked each other on set, but it didn’t stop the writers from putting their characters together on the show.
So it’s a “wait and see” thing, you know?

Well, both are well respected actors. I’m not saying that they would quit, but I think that they recognize qualities in their characters that would not make their characters a good match. That takes some good acting skills and analysis on their own part to think about the cliche boss ends up with secretary ending. I think they believe their characters are smarter than that. They just wouldn’t make a good match. I’m not saying that Daniel doesn’t deserve someone great, but I don’t think Betty is the one. They are better suited as friends and I respect the actors for thinking along the same lines.

Yeah, sorry, but I chose to believe the actors themselves- who have expressed either no opinion or a discomfort with the idea that them getting together TOO SOON could kill the show- over a spoiler hound and what his “moles” tell him with no conformation whatsoever. As for Detty being cliche, it’s no more so than the two geeks who were just abosolutely made for each other in every way, and that’s all I’m going to say on the matter. :)

You know, I’d have to doubt the validity of Ausiello’s “mole” on this one. This person says they were “vehemently opposed” to the romance prior to Season 1, but I find that highly doubtful. In a very early interview from 2006 - before Season 1 aired - Eric Mabius didn’t sound closed off to the possibility of a D/B romance at all.
Here’s the link to that interview:

Yes - in the past year, Eric Mabius has mentioned the words “death of show”, “unrequited love is better”, etc. when referring to a D/B romance, but he has vacillated somewhat in his opinion with certain interviews.
As for America Ferrera, she has never really given any answer hinting that she hates the idea. Instead, in every interview I’ve seen, she’s been quite neutral and diplomatic when fielding the D/B -romance question.
Pretty much, I’m doubtful of this “spy’s” words. And even if the mole is telling the truth? I think Jace is right. It doesn’t say much about the future. For all we know, America and Eric hated the idea of making Daniel and Betty fall in love exactly like the other Betty versions. But maybe they aren’t opposed to it, if it’s approached differently.
