America Ferrera Goes All Out For Clinton
February 18, 2008 by Tom
Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera is not trifling around with her political support for Hillary Clinton. Most celebrities will simply give an endorsement, maybe make an appearance or two – but Ferrera has literally joined Clinton’s campaign.
Over this past weekend, she traversed the state of Texas, campaigning for the presidential candidate. She made appearances in San Antonio, Austin, and then Houston. As I said, she’s not playing around.
“I am so excited for the day where I can tell every young Latino girl — look into her eyes and say there is no limit to what you can do as a woman,” said Ferrera in San Antonio. America is quite an asset for Clinton; she has appeal to young adults (where Clinton is trailing Senator Barack Obama), along with women and Latino voters.
How important is Ferrera to Clinton? Some think it is crucial, because the Betty Suarez character (and America Ferrera herself) is such an important cultural icon. “We always talk about the person on TV doesn’t look like us, doesn’t sound like us, doesn’t have the experience we’ve had, but America has,” said Delicia Herrera, San Antonio city councilman. “And she’s sending that message loudly as she campaigns for Hillary.”
Without going into the politics of it all, I will give Kudos to America Ferrera for being more than casually involved, in a traditional way. She truly is a role model. I do not think this will hurt or otherwise help Ferrera’s career – Americans can look past the politics of celebrities, as long as they do not go off the deep end (I’m not naming names – Sean Penn).
By the way, there’s some pretty cool video of Ferrera’s appearance at the KSAT site.
