No Signs Of Sophomore Slump For Ugly Betty
‘The Watcher’ has a review/preview of the first few episodes of Season 2 of Ugly Betty, along with a few nuggets about upcoming shows. She is impressed:
I’m happy to report that “Ugly Betty” … shows no signs of heading for a sophomore slump.
She describes the telenovela:
The opening minutes of the show’s second season are quite a hoot: an imaginary telenovela “La Pasones de Betty,” which stars Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) and her endearingly nerdy crush, Henry (Christopher Gorham).
On a set that appears to be made of cardboard, Betty wears a maid’s uniform, Henry sports a cowboy hat and there’s a dramatic entrance by Henry’s pregnant girlfriend, Charlie.
And it’s all in Spanish, of course (with subtitles).
The scene is only a dream — or nightmare — that Betty is having, but it’s no surprise that the series’ telenovela spoofs are as sharp as ever. Heading into its second season, “Ugly Betty” is still very much on its game.
She reveals quite a bit of spoiler-ish info (most we’ve covered here, but not all; for my outside-the-US friends, I’ll put this info after the jump)
Hoo-boy, I was afraid this was coming:
Truth be told, the tone is a bit different in the first couple of episodes of the season; things unfold at a slightly more low-key pace. “Ugly Betty” has always excelled at mixing sharp, campy humor with real heart, and there’s more of the latter especially in the Season 2 premiere.
Ana Ortiz did a bang-up job of playing Betty’s big-haired, big-hearted sister Hilda in Season 1, and here she’s rewarded with a story line that will have hard-core “Betty” fans dabbing away tears.
That’s the second time we’ve heard this. Please have tissues at the ready. There are, of course, hi-jinks galore, and Ryan gives us a peek:
But don’t worry, the silly Mode antics are still going strong. Office receptionist Amanda (Becki Newton) has a skittish dog to deal with — her only inheritance from her mom, Fey Sommers — and Wilhelmina is, as always, doing her best to wrest control of the magazine from Daniel (Eric Mabius).
At one point, Betty and Christina (Ashley Jensen) break into Wilhelmina apartment, which Christina calls “Satan’s boudoir.” Spotting the diva editor’s closet, she cracks, “Ten bucks says there’s a coat in there made of Dalmatian puppies.”
Hi - wait for it - larious! Based on the promo picswe’ve seen, it looks like this will happen: Betty and Christina are in Wilhelmina’s room (for whatever reason), and Wilhelmina gets home with her bodyguard (played by Rick Fox). It looks like our heroes hide under the bed while Willy and friend are having ahem - an intimate moment.
THAT’S going to be good comedy.
Reminder: I will live blog the during the airing of the upcoming premiere, and I’ll have a full recap shortly thereafter. Expect screen caps on Friday. Don’t worry, folks in the UK and Australia and elsewhere, I’ll put all spoilers behind ‘more’ links. Have no fear, your day is coming!
