America Ferrera’s Big Night
It was not totally unexpected that Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera would win an Emmy for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. What was unexpected (at least by me) is that Ferrera would make most lists of Best Dressed, while her more glamorous fellow cast members would be judged a little more harshly. Full disclosure: Becki Newton’s dress didn’t do much for me (a white mermaid outfit?), and I couldn’t decide about Vanessa Williams. If anybody can pull of the feather look, she can, but I’m just not sure she did.
But the night belonged to Ferrera. And she was gracious, both on the stage and off. Here is what she said backstage:
Ugly Betty’s America Ferrara, who picked up the Emmy for best actress in a comedy, said the win “symbolizes all the wonderful blessings of the past year. I’m so happy and humbled to be on a show that’s not only fun … but is making a difference and inspiring people and changing the way we look at prejudice and diversity.”
Sometimes, when she is interviewed, it’s hard to remember how young Ms. Ferrera is. She handles interviews like a much more experienced actress.
America seemed unflappable backstage:
8:34 p.m.: Is it an advantage to be a bilingual actress in Hollywood? Radiant but composed Ugly Betty winner America Ferrera wouldn’t know. “I was born and raised in the Valley, so I’m as bilingual as you, probably,” the Latina star politely informs a presumptive reporter.
8:35 p.m.: Ferrera just as politely declines to respond to an inquiry about her love life. Her position remains unchanged since last January’s Globes, where she offered a similar noncomment.
The first quote, I can relate to. My kids were born in Korea, but came to America in infancy; I can’t tell you how many questions they’ve been asked in Korean, only to answer with a southern accent ;) . Anyway, you have to appreciate Ferrera’s cool handling of the question.
And many others (not mentioning any names here), could take a cue from Ferrera’s graciousness in her acceptance speech:
“It’s an amazing thing that happens when your dreams come true,” the 23-year-old said, looking as opposite from ugly as you can get. But the real award, she told her Mode coworkers, “is to be able to wake up and go to work tomorrow and see all of your faces.”
Pure class.
